  1. Technical snafus mean that Sundays show will not be available via the usual link, which is a real bitch because it was a KILLER show. 3. LOL, so I got it perfect in the second half-hour I guess! Thanks as always Mel. You're the most musically-educated listener I have mate! Ian D
  4. Hi Kev, You'll get a much more detailed response from Tony Rounce or Ady Croasdel on this area - they'll know much better than me the ins and outs of the Wand/Sceptre catalogue and distribution set-ups in the 60's I'm sure. However, I can recommend a few books if you liked the Stax one (which is excellent in my opinion - I met Rob Bowman last year). Try these:- Exploding: The Highs, Hits, Hype, & Hustlers Of The Warner Music Group - Stan Cornyn Off The Record: An Oral History Of Popular Music - Joe Smith The Sound Of The City: The Rise Of Rock N' Roll - Charlie Gillett Making Tracks: The History Of Atlantic Records - Charlie Gillet Clive: Inside The Record Business - Clive Davis There's loads of others but they tend to deal more with Rock/Pop acts and more recent times. The 'Exploding' book is a great read if you're into the history of Warner Brs and record company politics! Ian D
  5. .....plus Bernie Williams, Denise Keeble and Beverly Wheeler to think of a few more. I bet a last hour @ The Mecca thread would throw up a few more surprises.......I don't remember the John Stansbury record though? Any good? Ian D
  6. Another 2 hours of beautifully sublime Soul music spanning 4 decades and a smorgasbord of genres from uplifting House & Garage, Soulful Disco, Irresistible 80's, Northern Soul, Modern Soul, Crossover Soul, Killer Slowies and Uplifting Gems...... Dunno what happened towards the end of the show here but apparently "the stream started buffering" (whatever that means) towards the end of the GREAT Ray Simpson tune and then kept dropping out towards the end of the show, so we've had to fade the recording appropriately dammit! Will try and post up a better link in the next day or so, but here's 1 hour 50 minutes of the full 2 hours of the time being........ 7. I got asked to pull out a few Xmas songs for a Starpoint Radio Xmas show which is coming up, so I thought I'd dig out a few Northern things and I'm struggling already. The only one I could find was this...... Artie Fullilove "Santa Claus Please Listen To Me" Marlu 1001 https://www.zshare.net/audio/523814705ea9a338/ The best bit on the track is when he sings "Santa Claus please listen to me, please don't bring me a gun" LOL..... Any others out there? Ian D
  8. Yeah, but the Northern thread is there with Charlie Calello, Sandy Linzer and Denny Randell involved........ Ian D

  11. Damn! You got me all excited there for a minute! It's on Refosoul so someone must have one I'd have thought........ Cheers anyway mate..... Ian D
  12. Can anyone send me an MP3 of "The Grooviest Thing This Side Of Heaven" by Wendell Watts if poss? My copies long gone and I really wanna play it on the show tomorrow..... Many thanks in advance. Ian D
  13. I think PIAS have a more diverse business model than many others, so who knows. One thing's for certain: there are too many distributors with too many overheads for todays declining market, so more will go bust. Right now I'm watching EMI like a hawk. It's difficult to understand and compute how the venture capital firm Terra Firma will be able to claw back the £3.2 billion they paid for EMI last year and the further £2.5 billion in interest, running costs and overhead charges they've racked up to date. So, by my calculations, they'll need to clear almost £6 billion to get into the black again and they'll have to flog multiple downloads to every person in the world to achieve that IMO....... Makes my problems pale in comparison......... Ian D
  14. LOL. Have you heard what he plays.......? Ian D
  15. Mmmm. Not sure, but there's a track called "Sky Blue" by Thunderfunk Symphony on EMI International that may be worth checking. I've got one upstairs somewhere, so I'll give it a listen.......ya never know........ Could be completely wrong of course, in which case, sorry........ Ian D
  16. Oh gaaaawd.........I wonder who's going to be next.........? Ian D
  17. Well that's a different scenario and I sympathise with you in that case. In my experience you've always been extremely generous to lots of people and especially Damon. You'd have thought with all the meals, trips and other things you've sprung for in the past when he wasn't doing that well that he'd have at least forgone the lecture! It's beyond me mate but it doesn't really surprise me. Some people are just like that. If I had £2K spare I'd lend it to you in a second. If it's any consolation I got "Cafe Regio's" into Juno today and should have a HUGE export order coming shortly. Still pushing for those all elusive radio plays as well. I just can't understand why Craig Charles hasn't spun it yet - I'd have thought it would fit in perfectly with his show............ Something'll break for ya shortly. I can feel it in my bones....... And on the positive side, at least we weren't caught up in the Woolworths/Entertainment UK/Pinnacle/Windsong disasters of the last 10 days, so we're still alive and kicking! Keep the faith baby! Ian D
  18. "It's All Been Said Before" - Bobby Hutton off the "Piece Of The Action" album. Track after "Lend A Hand" in fact.......... Ian D
  19. You and me both LOL. He virtually lived off my EMI expense account I seem to remember! I'm a believer that fate goes full circle, so it'll come back in some form or other hopefully............ Mind you, does it surprise you that much......? Ian D
  20. Yeah but a lot of the Eccentric Soul stuff seems to finding an audience with some pretty bizarre none-commercial material it seems. Also I presume that the Peri-Tone/Yellow Horizon stuff would be owned by his estate wouldn't it? And licensing costs necessarily need to fall as there's simply no way of recouping some of the ridiculous advances some people are looking for - the majors being the worst culprits....... Ian D
  21. Phew. Thank God for that. I thought someone over there had some kind of magic solution for the ills of the music biz LOL.... Glad to see you guys are still wearing rags and investing in great packaging rather then new threads. Keep up the good work! By the way, when is someone going to get around to doing a 'Texas Soul' Oscar Perry comp? You'd sell a few over here if you did........ Ian D
  22. Yep. It's right next to Jade Goody's best-seller...... Ian D
  23. Yep, I keep hearing about this Sebastian. One for the Xmas list. Many thanks. Ian D
  24. I think I'm right in saying that Branson sold the Virgin stores to an MBO, cleared the existing debts and funded 'em for 2 years providing they changed the name. His thinking was that music retail was dead, he wanted to get out but couldn't afford the Virgin brand to be tainted by any problems, hence the fact that the stores changed from Virgin to Zavvi. The funding period is coming to close now and co-incidentally I'm noticing lots of the provincial Zavvi stores closing down without warning, so watch this space! In terms of coming up with new solutions, the old system pretty much has to be dismantled completely as it bears no relation to reality anymore. That will take a massive sea change on the part of the major companies (who own 80% of the most popular repertoire), the rights organisations, the shops, the distributors, the manufacturers, the mastering companies, designers etc, etc. There is a market out there but it's a much cheaper one than any of the existing power brokers want. I sold 26,000 cd's the other week @ 30p each and that was a struggle! Ian D
  25. These are precisely the kind of venture capitalists I'm seeking Paul. They're the only ones with any dosh these days. Also, pimps and loan sharks considered as well....any of Thatcher's entrepreneurs in fact. I do however draw the line @ lawyers and accountants........gotta have some kind of standards......... Ian D
