I bet John could get £500 for Ray Merrell. The power of his mailing list must be huge. I see Lee Fields has halved in price! Ian D

And yes, Jerry, I think was played extensively on Caroline now come to think about it. Can anyone confirm? Ian D

Raymond Lefevre - Soul Coaxing
It's a brilliant record Simon. I first heard it when a Radio One DJ used to use it as background music (can't remember who it was now). It came out on Major Minor over here and on a label called 4 Corners Of The World (a division of Kapp) in the U.S. It's pure Northern IMO and one of the best string-sections ever committed to vinyl and it's probably the French sensibility of composer Michel Polnareff which touches the heartstrings 'cos he's an unbelievable arranger........ Condition Red - The Goodees - Hip
"Leader Of The Pack" I think. "Condition Red" was later I believe - '66 or '67 thereabouts? Got mine off Bradford Market for 10p in '74 thinking it was a vocal to the Baltimore & Ohio Marching Band LOL......... Ian D

The Rarest Known Micheal Jackson On Vinal? Please Read
Why dontcha put it on the bay for a £1000K minimum and see what happens? That way the market will soon tell you if it's rare or not as you'll get a stack of enquiries if it's a genuine hot item. I'm doing a similar thing with a batch of 20 x 7" Promos. I'll put 'em on @ a £300 minimum and see what happens. My feeling is that there are hardly any Jacko rarities. He's the most consistant popular artist of the last 30 years so there's little chance that they'd bother pressing less than a few hundred of anything otherwise it wouldn't be worth priniting the labels up for promo use! Most of the decent promos will be in collections or with people who worked for Epic and/or Jacko in some capacity I reckon. The rest will have gone to Radio Stations and promo reps to give out at the time. But get it on now. No time like the present to sell a Jacko rarity, which is almost a contradiction in terms if you think about it. None of his stuff is rare really is it? So I'd grab a grand for it if someone offered...... Best of luck, Ian D

It's been 38 years since I had it but I'm pretty sure it was vinyl. Also a very badly printed label from memory - it looked like a boot back then........ Ian D

The Rarest Known Micheal Jackson On Vinal? Please Read
Surprisingly I have circa 20 mint U.S. and U.K. promos on MJ and The Jacksons which I'm about to stick up as a collection, so wouldn't mind a pointer towards some MJ experts myself...... Also, even better I stumbled into a 31 album collection of rare Hendrix t'other week - all his 60's albums (on London, Track & Polydor) plus some rare imports, German box-set, the "Rainbow Bridge" soundtrack and an acetate for which I can't find any info but it's of a live set which doesn't appear to be available anywhere, even on Bootleg so do you know any Hendrix experts Pete........? Cheers! Ian D

This Weeks Original Mastercuts On Starpoint With Ian Dewhirst
Well what a strange surreal weekend it's been. The events of the last 72 hours have really been the age of round-the-clock coverage of one of the biggest stars of the last 40 years, the brilliant Michael Jackson following his passing away on Thursday evening. At the time of writing MJ is No.1 on the UK album chart again, but we thought we'd rather concentrate on the GREAT records he made, rather than the Pop successes which everyone else will play. So here it is folks our 'lil tribute to the best of MJ from the last 40 years. Hope you enjoy it...... Many thanks to JJ, Dave and the Six Million Steps crew for the fantastic work they've already put in on preserving some precious archive material and also Neil Thomson for services beyond the call of duty in helping put together this tribute show. This Weeks Original Mastercuts On Starpoint With Ian Dewhirst
Well there's gonna have to be some M.J. isn't there LOL? Wouldn't be right if I didn't include a few tunes would it? So we'll dip in and out throughout the show I guess and try and get some of the real beauties instead of "Thriller" every two minutes! It's been a bit of a struggle deciding what's in and what isn't and I can tell you I've brushed away a tear or two in the process. An amazing track record that's spans 4 decades deserves some respect doesn't it? So some beauties lined up throughout. Many thanks to all who have helped put this show together like, super quick! You know who you are! Ian D

Wow. Great service Mark. Well done. Did you manage to find a method of doing this that's somehow eluded everyone else out of curiosity? Ian D

This week's Manship results perlease
Yep, I remember. Out of curiosity, do many auctions publish their end prices or is up to the discretion of the auctioneer or buyer? We always hear about the prices which famous works of art go for which in turn supplies news covereage and media interest, so is it a good thing or not? Presumably most people on here will subscribe to John's website so maybe he's not too bothered about letting the info out.....? Ian D

This week's Manship results perlease
People have been saying that to me since the late 70's! It's a form of self-torture LOL. Like becoming addicted to self-flagellation. I'd wait for John's auction results every week and then castigate myself for not keeping certain records. This in turn would throw me into a deep depression, so maybe a good thing we don't know the results after all........ Ian D

Detroit Session Releases 1St July 2009
I'll second that Carl. I spoke with Phil this afternoon and we'd like to have a crack at this because of the story behind it. We think it'll be interesting to a lot of people and will be a natural item in local TV, news shows and other media and that's probably the direction to go with this project. You should be telling the story and relating the experience. In a perfect world it would already be a documentary IMO. I mean it's not everyone persues their dreams in the way you've gone about it mate! I think it's a great story which we've all been watching for the last year or more on S.S. and which will be much more interesting than the lastest manufactured Pop hype. But the buzz word so far, is the incredible degree of authenticity you've got on these recordings and that's another part of the story. Well done. They sound fantastic and 100% authentic, so we now know that it's still possible to record Northern Soul in Detroit that sounds 100% authentic and keeps 60's in feel. Fantastic! Let's have a natter and see if we can help...... Best, Ian D

I tend to agree with you Boogaloo. The best publicity you can ever get is word of mouth - if people have the conviction to discuss something you tend to listen to 'em. It wasn't that long ago that the Lee Fields going for £750 on John's auction prompted a 7 page thread LOL. Yet now look at JM's Auction End Prices thread - it's gone from a huge vibrant river to a small insignificant trickle in a mere 3 weeks! However, I think John sees this a proprietary information and is probably trying for figure out the best way of disseminating it in the future, which is absolutely his right of course. But trying to get John's head around publicity or PR is like trying to get a Salvadores for £100 LOL. Plus he's a record dealer, so naturally he wants to sell stuff. My guess is that John will study the effects of leaving the auction prices private and then weigh up how he'll make 'em available again in the future. With the new website I guess he's simply studying all the available options as any intelligent, publicity-shy record dealer will do. I had a few interesting chats with John and I think it's fair to say that we're philosphically at odds on certain aspects of the value of PR/publicity, so I'm interested in seeing whether the end prices will reappear at any time and in what form. But that apart, his business model seems pretty sound and he probably has the most accurate information in the world on Rare record sales and prices so I don't blame him being careful. Dammit. That's it isn't it? I just figured it out! How about a John Manship's Top 200 Auctions Book with scans, background info, bid history and closing prices? The holy grail of auction books! He has all the info and scans already stored so he could probably knock it out in his lunch hour........? I'd buy it for sure and I bet every record hound in the world would too? C'mon John, put us out of our misery and let the vinyl junkies have their info-fix! Ian D

Detroit Session Releases 1St July 2009
You've got mates all over Carl! This was an e-mail I got on Sunday (which I blacked redacted out to protect a couple of names) "Listen properly to Carl Dixon's track on Spyder Turner. I adore it to bits. Go here https://www.bbc.co.uk/6music/shows/funk_soul/ move the bar to 48 minutes and 40 seconds to find it. It's amazing. He should do it on vinyl. ?????? - put it out for him on ??????? - if you do it will sell a thousand easily. Maybe he shoud edit the middle guitar bit out though ??? Just a suggestion. You all need to listen right now - it's only online to listen for a week". And don't worry about the middle guitar bit - everyone else voted it in! Can you send me a file and I'll play it Sunday? Best, Ian D

I Give Up
A record which you'd trip over at tons of cut-out places in the U.K. in the 70's - in fact, so common it would be embarassing to even have one in your sales box LOL. Many of the copies I saw back then were water-damaged and I often wondered whether these came from the same stock that Jim Wilson in Shoreditch had (same load as the Del-Larks which were similarly damaged). I seem to remember this being around at the same time....... So not that rare and one will come up soon enough I reckon. Ian D
