  1. Fascinating stuff Sean. The next time you get down here I must introduce you to a local bar called "The Priory" which will love this story and serve you up a great cocktail......... I actually took this a stage further by putting in print some none-existent records on my Vinyl Junkies list around '77. I had a GREAT Stanley Mitchell invented track but I can't remember the title dammit.......... I got obsessed with artists and titles from looking through lists to the point where, if an artist or title appealed to me, that would often be enough for me to try and get the record. I liked the mystique of certain names - Duke Browner, Bob Relf, Bobby Treetop, the Tartans, The Wingate Love-In Strings, the Detroit Executives, the Kadoo Strings, Jimmy Conwell, Len Jewell etc, etc. Who were these people with such great names and such great f*ckin' records.....? Surely the first acknowledged 'invention' must be Toby Turner's "My Room Is 6 by 6" on Musicor? Everybody wanted a vocal to Earl Van Dyke's "6 by 6" and someone invented one......... Ian D
  2. Yep. Don't see many of 'em around so that's a coincidence..... Ian D

  4. It's also worth pointing out that the U.S. actually issued a 7" Strata East promo on this when it was first issued as well. Must be pretty rare...... Ian D
  5. And that's precisely the market they're aiming for. This will probably outsell far better and more serious compilations by a margin of 20:1 believe it or not. Strange but true. Ian D
  6. I've got one knocking around somewhere you can have. I'll have a dig around........won't be 'til later this week though, so if another comes along then snag it...... Ian D
  7. I think it's getting increasingly difficult to expect mint copies of records from 40-50 years ago and I think a lot of people will need to manage their expectations in future. Short of getting a a one-off great hit of untouched stock that's lain untouched for 40 odd years (like John did in Oakland), it's really not going to happen. Also people have been collecting on this scene since these records came out so a good 50-95% of the available stock is already in collectors or dealers hands for the most part, so a lot of those 'minters' have actually been played a few times surely? So when you look at the odds, I'm surprised genuine minters don't demand an even higher premium. It's often made me laugh in the past, when I've been sat on an incredibly rare record that maybe taken me 20 years to find and the person who wants to buy it says something like, "it's got to be mint". Yeah right! That's gonna happen LOL. Obviously we ALL want minters but the days when that is a viable option are receding massively. After all, what's the point in buying a record unless you're gonna play it? Ian D
  8. Mmm. There's food for thought. Can you imagine an Isley Brothers version.....? It's even stranger since R. Dean Taylor was primarily a writer anyway - he wrote both "Gotta See Jane" and "Indiana Wants Me"........ Ian D
  9. Yeah, have you heard it though? The lead singer's a Puerto Rican transvestite with two Brazilian putas on BV's and the beat's kinda Disco Northern.......... And excuse me, but that version I played was the exclusive Larry Saunders Re-Edit! Personally I think you put it into my head LOL.... Ian D
  10. ......and here's my Disco Tex & The Sexolettes cover-up....... Ian D
  11. Yep, I figured it could be Move but there's zero info on the record and I can't find it in any listings so it looks like a one-sided test-pressing which never made it any further....... Ian D
  12. I've noticed a lot of differences between UK and US 7" presses over the years. Obviously there's loads of Disco era anomalies but for the older stuff the most noticeable are the late 70's London re-issue of Bobby Paris "Night Owl" and Yvonne Baker "You Didn't Say A Word". Both recordings sound brighter than the U.S. mixes and you can actually hear the tracks to the end - on the Bobby Paris you can actually hear the horns cut out completely instead of going in the fade. Also the London pressing of Larry Saunders "On The Real Side" is tons better than the U.S. pressing. Also the UK 7" of Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr "Shine On Silver Moon" is totally different to the 12" mix - almost a different record - less gimmicky percussion and more of a straight song...... I'll try and dig out some more oddball ones..... Ian D
  13. Blimey, I feel like a bus. No show for ages and then 3 in the space of 8 days! Anyway this week with the sun finally out in the UK we seem to have a very Disco-centric show today with the usual blend of a couple of exclusives, some killer re-edits and remixes and a general Soulful trawl through the last 40 years of Soul music. 14. Just reading Sam's column in this month's Manifesto and he reviews Bobby Bowens & Shades Of Magic ft Ron Engram "Gonna Love Somebody" on Galactic Star and it rang a bell so I checked the shelves and I have a UK pressed single-sided white label pressing of this. There's no info on the label or the deadwax. Does anyone know the story on this. Was is slated for UK release and then never issued? Ian D
  15. OK, this was a Bank Holiday special show to make up for me locking myself out of the studio a couple of weeks back LOL..... Also my first time behind the new space-age console @ the Starpoint Studios trying to deal with a new layout and lots of flashing lights and strange buttons but managed to get through it without too many cock-ups luckily. So this week we have another musical odyssey through the last few decades with a brace of exclusives as per usual but with the common denominator of SOUL!
