I thought it was at the time Jason. I had no idea that the tracks had actually come out until John posted the Hypnotics scan after I played it. I didn't even know about the Otis Williams until Smudge posted that scan either. It's blown me away that the Otis Williams has been out there for 31 years without it cropping up before........ Absolutely killer track recently unearthed by John Smith. I played it on the show on the show a couple of weeks ago and it had an incredible reaction! Turns out, the other side "I Got To Have You" is even better and I'm kicking myself that I didn't play that as well. Will play 'em both again this Sunday along with some other goodies from the Emkay label like this one:- One Way Ticket - The Hypnotics The records were released in 1979 but it turned out to be a tax dodge of some sort, so neither the Otis Williams or Hypnotics tracks ever got properly distributed and only a handful radio copies made it out. The producer was Kent Washburn who was a Motown staff producer at one point. Phenomenal discoveries! The Otis Williams record is pretty much one of the best 70's double-siders I think I've ever heard. Hopefully these will be a future Soul Intention releases. It's hard to believe that repertoire of this quality is still out there! The guy's obviously a dick. What's his point on the Duke 395 Bud Harper "Wherever You Were" b/w Bobby Bland "Shoes" though? Was that a boot? He says The "real" Duke 395 was Ida Fisher- "Bad Understanding" b/w "No Request" - 1966. I don't really know the catalogue that well so can't comment but I'm curious as to whether Duke may have reissued it......... Ian D

Mmm. Get ready for 'Vinyl Junkies Vol 2 - The Return' then. Maybe I can get my daughter to type it all up.....? You know what my collections are like Blake. I just get stacks of stuff and whack it in the shelves and then wait 10 years or so to see which ones take off LOL. This latest collection has been going on and off since the mid 90's (and tons of U.S. trips) but I'm sometimes guilty of mis-filing stuff in the wrong sections. I found a Jean Plum UK promo in the Ballad section the other day and a Watson T. Browne mint promo in the Pop section a few weeks back......I haven't done a serious trawl through for the last 10 years or so, so who knows what's in there. I've been putting off going through it all for ages. Also, I've been collecting white promo U.S. 7"'s since I last saw you and that section's boomed over the last 10 years or so....... No complex discount system this time around either! Ian D

Tons and tons of 'em I reckon. Especially in attics, cellars and garden sheds - I found an album collection in my attic from a previous occupant which included tons of original London albums so I guess anything's possible. I'm going through a similar dilemma with my 7" collection which frankly has been gathering dust for the most part over the last 30 odd years. I'm now out of space and beginning to look at the amount of space my 7"'s are taking up - we're talking a complete wall from floor to ceiling of UK and US 7"'s which for the most part I never actually play anymore because it's almost a full-time job keeping the buggers filed and in order. Add to that the 12" collection, the album collection, the book collection, the CD collection and the other detrius from the last 40 years and we're talking a substantial amount of space. I haven't quite decided what to do yet but I think I'd rather pass 'em on to people who would make better use of them than I can. I just can't bring myself to the pain of listing 'em all.........but I need a new car, new laptop and, in fact, new everything so maybe that's just another job for the Winter! Ian D

Yep. that's what drives us all surely? I try and keep my ears open. Occasionaly, something I heard 30 years ago that didn't hit me at the time, suddenly makes perfect sense some 30 years later and hits the spot perfectly. But, by the same token, 95% of most stuff I hear doesn't pass muster at all, in any catergory. My personal expectations are very high 'cos I've been listening to music for 50 years and know what I like so I trust my ears. So I LOVE your enthusiam Bearsy! Makes me remember why I got into this scene in the first place. I envy your innocence and fresh ears mate. That's EXACTLY how it hit me when I was your age. F*ckin' GREAT innit? Ian D

I couldn't believe that the Mirfield Pentagon became the epicentre of UK club culture when Hard Times kicked off. I went to the same venue when it was called The Ginza Strip as a 14 year old circa 1969. Some bastard from Mirfield Modern chinned me and welcomed me to the realities of surviiving in Mirfield whilst trying to be a flash twat. Served me well throughout the future as it happens..... On the Frankie Knuckles record, I'm pretty certain that the 7" mix is a totally different mix from the 12" (i.e, not just an edited version of the 12"). I'll go back to it over the weekend and check, but I seem to remember that the 7" sounded just perfect and would have easily fitted with a Modern/Northern crowd perfectly, whereas the 12" was too far the other way towards the House crowd. It wouldn't surprise me though. The best evidence is the 7" UK single mix of Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr's "Shine On Silver Moon" which is a HUGE Soul anthem of the highest order but ONLY on the UK 7" mix. But unfortunately no one's heard it 'cos it's rare as hell! The 12" is an absolutely wonderful kinda campy Disco monster but far too way out for Modern/Morthern ears. But the 7" mix is a totally different kettle of fish and almost sounds like a totally different song. Has anyone else heard this? So when the Frankie Knuckles question came up it made me wonder how many great 'made for radio' 7" mixes of great House tunes would work for the Northern/Modern audiences? For instance, I'd love to hear a 7" mix of "Back Together" by Hardsoul ft Ron Carroll or "Someday, Somehow" by Deep Sensation. If ever there were a couple of 'House' records that would hit the spot for the Northern crowd then those two would be in with a shout I reckon. I'm basically willing myself to spend a weekend going through all my UK 7"'ers (several thousand unfortunately) to see if anything else jumps out and zaps me........... Ian D
