Newbie Help Cd Buying Guidance Thank You
OK. Good start but you really need to pick up the other 2 volumes of The Northern Soul Story to make up the set:- The Northern Soul Story Vol 2: The Golden Torch The Northern Soul Story Vol 4: Wigan Casino £4 a pop. Beat that! Ian D

Just Bought This
You're right. The Italian Durium copy has the same pic sleeve as the Dutch label. I just picked up a minter in a charity shop in Slough yesterday for the grand total of 50p! Ian D

Soul Died When Wigan Opened
Couldn't have put it better myself. Beautiful description Dave and bang on the money. Bought the first copy of the Tomangoes off Kev in the record bar and boy was I sweating that night! Bought the second copy of the Detroit Executives off Russ on the stage and couldn't believe my luck. Never did get that Invitations off Snowy but I've lost count of the hundreds of killer tunes I did get in that record bar from 50p to a couple of quid a pop. It was a vinyl fix every week. Sometimes, after I'd done a deal, I used to go upstairs by myself and sit by the edge of the balcony and just soak up the atmospherem watch those 1500 people dancing and feel a real glow of contentment that I was on the most happening scene in the world. And right there, at that moment in time, I was! Ian D

Soul Died When Wigan Opened
The original quote doesn't make much sense to me. If you trace the scene right back to early wheel days you'll find that there's always been oddball records played - no one club had the exclusivity on great records that's for sure. Also every 5 years or so brings a different turnover of people. I too knew original Wheel and Torch goers who didn't particularly like Wigan but I also know equally as many that loved it. My personal feelings are that Wigan was pretty hard to beat in those first two or three years but went off the boil a bit post '75.......... Ian D

Selling Bootleg Cd's
There was Joan. "The Home Taping Is Killing Music" logo was standard on many album releases in the 80's........ Home Taping Is Killing Music Ian D

100 Club To Close By Xmas
Wow. I can't believe the coverage the 100 Club has been getting on both ITV and BBC news today. Tremendous stuff! Ronnie Wood and Mick Taylor from the Stones rolled out and got all the press and TV coverage and the slots were great and were obviously heartfelt pleas to take the issue seriously. Whoever organised this deserves a pat on the back. This has propelled the issue into the mainstream and given the media a good angle and a good cause to promote in the season of goodwill. Excellent PR and this could really help the situation. Watch the papers tomorrow! And expect some press types at the next Northern event! All good! Ian D

Ebay Dealer
It was the Good Life cafe which was meant to be cool. I had my doubts but everyone thought I was being a wuss LOL. Didn't like the vibe at all when I got there and I'm generally easy going pretty much anywhere. It was when some PCP frazzled gangsta started fronting me that I figured it was time to leave. Got out by the skin of my teeth only to end up a few miles away in what seemed to be a war zone at the time. Anyone who's seen the brilliant film "Training Day" will know what I'm talking about. https://hiphopwired.com/2009/07/07/the-good-life-l-a-hip-hops-untold-story/ Ian D

Bloody kids ay? Like your son, I too was running around Compton looking for records when I was 21. Only difference is that I always got out of there before 4.00pm. That was in '76. I went back in '96 and ended up at a rap cafe in Compton by accident @ 9.00pm one night. Bad mistake. I was lucky to get out in one piece. I went to a friend's place in Compton to chill-out after the cafe incident only to keep hearing gunshots and low-flying police helicopters nearby. I couldn't get out of the bloody place fast enough LOL. Not somewhere to settle for an English white guy. Is he nuts? Hope he's OK and all is well with him. He'd be much better off and safer living in the valley. Ian D

We Let Go Of A Beautiful Thing......?

We Let Go Of A Beautiful Thing......?
Never seen an issue, owned the demo once and lost it in a swap deal for something else I wanted at the time and maybe seen 3 or 4 other copies in 35 odd years. Now I'm becoming obsessed with the damn record 'cos it's not on You Tube or Refo and the only way to hear a snippit of it is via that terrible quality sound file on John's site. That's rare is this and age surely? Ian D

How Come They Never Made It Big?
Merely the power of positive passion for a tune Eddie! Good tip ay? Did I ever congratulate you on your excellent taste old bean? Ian D

How Come They Never Made It Big?
Actually I have on previous parts of this thread Chalky. I'm pleased to say I have now conquered my aversion to Refosoul, even though it feels slightly like it was designed by a clod in the mid 90's (which is probably closer to the truth than anyone realises). It still hasn't got "Beautiful Thing" by Ralphie D on 20th Century in but there again neither has that friggin' You Tube........... Somebody put Ralphie D up and put me out of my misery willya........... Ian D

We Let Go Of A Beautiful Thing......?
Massive bargain! I think that's a rare record........... It'll seem like the steal of the year if anyone ever plays it! Ian D

We Let Go Of A Beautiful Thing......?
Yep, that's where I tracked it down eventually. Funny, I could have sworn it was £20 earlier today............... Ian D

We Let Go Of A Beautiful Thing......?
Can't say I remember it from Wigan but that was pretty much the exact time I had it. Sounds perfect to me now. Catchy, well-produced stomping Northern Soul. Can't think why I never played the bloody thing at the time.......... Ian D
-
We Let Go Of A Beautiful Thing......?
Nope. I've located it now. It's Ralphie D "Beautiful Thing" on 20th Century. If anyone can stick a clip up that'd be great! Ian D

We Let Go Of A Beautiful Thing......?
I've had this bloody record going through my head for the last week. I think it's called "We Let Go Of A Beautiful Thing" which could be Ralphie D on 20th Century? Haven't heard it or seen it for 40 years but I remember it being pretty damn good. Must be memorable if nothing else! Does anyone have a file or can they stick it in Refo Soul? Thanks in advance. Never been a problem for me Nev. I think it works as a nice wind-down actually. Besides, with a dance-floor of 40 plusers you have to give 'em time to get their breath back! Ian D
