  2. Lovely crowd for the show this week, so many thanks for everyone who joined in the Sunday afternoon banter in the Starpoint chatroom. Also great to have a truly international audience which stretches from Melbourne, Australia to Dallas in Texas via Crystal Palace in Sarf London and all other points of the UK. The power of the internet is truly staggering and we're lucky to have such a fantastic tool at our disposal, so many thanks to Sir Tim Berners-Lee from London for inventing it! Good on ya Tim! Also many thanks to the new listeners who have joined us this year and to all the re-edit and remix enthusiasts, especially to those that are sending me stuff directly. There's some truly awesome stuff coming through, many of which leave the originals in the shade, so thanks once again, This week, a show full of much-loved goodies and long-term show faves, some killer re-edits, some wonderful Philly gems, some underplayed Soul goodies and a final 30 minutes of mellow-groove bliss. Hey, that's what we do on grey winter Sunday afternoons in the UK. Gotta get some sunshine somehow! 3. Mmmm. Interesting that Jesse and James & The JJ Band version of Carl Douglas & The Big Stampede's "Something For Nuthing" (originally on Okeh in the U.S.) ay? I don't know that version but looks very interesting........is it any good? Ian D
  4. Must've been divs 'cos Debbie Fleming was never rare! Ian D
  5. I think the Northern scene was less racist than most places back then now that I think about it........ Ian D
  6. Trust you Kev! Good haul though. And I don't know the Rocky Roberts however I did find a mint pic sleeve Duriem copy in Slough just before Xmas........ Ian D
  7. Those two points are kinda interesting. On the first point, a lot of the younger audiences may be predictably scared off by the age gap, knowledge gap and attitude gap. Those things weren't so much of a problem 40 years ago 'cos the scene was still young and there was less volume of knowledge, so it didn't take too long to get up to speed. Everybody was also the same age give or take 5 years wheras these days it's more like 50 LOL. The attitude will never change but the gestation period is much longer these days. I was only a 'div' for a couple of months and then a bloody DJ within a year. And, on the second point, given the amount that some of these compilations have sold, you can bet that young people will be listening to this music and getting off on it by themselves. I agree with the point someone made earlier, that new hybrid scenes will develop which will include Northern Soul and probably lots of other stuff. I've been to a few parties just lately where they like to mix it up a bit and it works pretty well with the crowd. I've seen 'em drop some Northern monsters into the mix and send the place nuts. So the Northern Soul Deejay's of the future will probably come from some musically-interested kid who's just coming up to 11 or 12 about now and who will be listening to his parent's bloody Asda Northern Soul CD's and liking what he's hearing............ Ian D
  8. The same as the one in Post No.1. I sold a UK copy of this for around £60 a couple of years ago. This was the same copy that I bought from Woods in Huddersfield in 1972...... Ian D
  9. Actually I've been a big fan of his since Reservoir Dogs and as a result of that I went to the UK premiere of Pulp Fiction which cemented his reputation for me. Shortly after that, I became Head Of A&R for a quality vinyl album reissue company called Simply Vinyl. We did a deal with Universal Music and in the first 10 Universal titles I chose, I went with Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction 'cos I thought they'd be popular with retro vinyl album collectors and the booming Tarrantino film crowd. I then 'met' Quentin on the "Ain't It Cool' film forum and mentioned I'd just released 2 x 180gram vinyl albums of his first 2 films, got his address and sent 'em over. He was knocked out with 'em! He hasn't offered me a bloody soundtrack to do yet though......... I'll have to give the big clod a clip around the ear when I next see him........ Ian D
  10. Never any rest for the wicked. Been a busy week as usual so as part of my three-step recovery from a ridiculous lifestyle, welcome to another 2 hours in the Soul Music Sunday afternoon comfort zone otherwise known as the Original Mastercuts Show! This week the emphasis is on GREAT, GREAT productions all the way through our usual trawl through 5 decades of breath-taking Soul music. So some regular show faves, some fabulous new re-edits, some under-exposed gems, a couple of exclusives and hopefully a wonderful exercise in whiling away a lazy Sunday afternoon. I'm looking forward to it! 11. No, but the i-tunes sales of the Human Beinz will soar and people may then be tempted to hear more similar stuff. However, we're perhaps missing the point here. The key task was putting an athletics ad together with a tune that has the requisite energy and appeal and I think they succeeded on that level. Also that'll be a nice pension fund for the Isley Brothers! Ian D
  12. OK, that makes sense. Point taken. Mind you, I reckon I could still play a blinding set with my Northern CD collection 'cos I've got hundreds of 'em from the last 20 odd years, most of which are long deleted now........ Ian D
  13. Mmm. Makes my £50 copies look like a bargain now dunnit? Larry Wedgeworth & Clique - E-Bay Cheers to Nev for alerting me LOL....... Ian D
  14. When I talk about CD's, I'm not talking about the ones you buy in the shops Matt. I'm talking about about 200 + CD's which have been personally burnt from my own collection, of which somewhere around 20% of the tunes aren't available on any physical format including vinyl. Just to reiterate the point, I got 20 x CD's worth of previously unreleased 60's and 70's material just yesterday. I personally don't use commercially available CD's at all. Naturally, yes, I still have to use a box of 4-500 vinyl for some gigs but I far prefer to have a choice of thousands rather then hundreds of tunes. To me being dogmatic about a format simply limits ones choices. Ian D

  16. Out Monday "Mellow Mellow" comp from Harmless, the final one of the 15th Anniversary releases Not particularly Northern by any means, but some of you may be into some of these so no harm in posting 'em I guess. After 4 new Disco Discharges and Trax Re-Edited, Harmless gets back to some Soul again with the final 2 of our 15th anniversary releases which celebrate another two of the label's most popular series from the previous 15 years both compiled by the good Dean Rudland...... Just as an otherwise ferocious Winter draws to end and the first flowers of Spring begin to blossom, lo and behold what could be better then another special edition of another one of Harmless's flagship series, so welcome to "Mellow Mellow" - 15th Anniversary Crystal Edition. As with the original albums in this flagship series, we present a veritable cornucopia of Mellow Soul delights designed to be played as you're relaxing in the Sun, preferably on a beach or in long field of tall grass. As with "The Breaks" (also released this month) we've utilised the services of compiler extraordinaire Dean Rudland to scour the vaults of various catalogues like Curtom, Philadelphia International, Kelli-Arts, Invictus, Columbia, Epic, Hi, Brunswick, Fantasy, Philly World, Sleeping Bag and Spring to bring you 2 CD's worth of simply delectable music compiled with love and expertise by one of the most knowledgeable Soul Music experts in the world. Naturally there are a host of tracks which have either NEVER been available on CD before or which are currently unavailable on compilations like Jae Mason's "Cloud Of Sunshine", Maryann Farra & Satin Soul's "Living In The Footsteps Of Another Girl", Side Effect's "Spend It On Love", Anthony White's "I'm So Much In Love With You", MFSB feat Carla Benson's "Tell Me Why" and Millie Jackson and Isaac Hayes' "Soft Lights, Sweet Music & You". Also it gives us great pleasure to finally unearth Eugene Wilde's superlative UK and US smash "Gotta Get You Home With Me Tonight" which has long been unavailable on CD and is always in demand. As per usual, Harmless will be doing a full-on major Press, Promotion and Radio campaign targeting a much larger range of media then other Harmless releasesas we think"Mellow Mellow" has the potential to reach a much wider audience then most Harmless releases. So ease yourself into what will undoubtedly be a beautiful Spring this year and make "Mellow Mellow" the soundtrack for the Summer! You know it makes sense! 17. Yep. Essentially correct Wee Mark. Well done. Ian D
  18. Wow. Stunning mate. That is a record I want to own. I'm still of the opinion that this record is one of the best double-siders of all time. I find it amazing that a record of this calibre, via both the A & B sides, somehow still managed to fall through the gaps on it's original release. Well it's here now LOL....... Can't wait to get it in my hands at last! Roughly when did you say the delivery date was Paul.........? Ian D
  19. Yeah, he's the real deal for sure. Wonderful voice. Cunnie was good enough to put me onto a great mix of this t'other month:- Cee-Lo "I Want You" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZY8g96fMgg Ian D
  20. Yep, he's a major vinyl fan. I did the 180 gram vinyl pressings for both "Reservoir Dogs" and "Pulp Fiction" soundtracks and he loved 'em! Ian D
  21. Yeah, weird ay? Since I never played it off the original LP because the U.S. 7" copies came in immediately, I never really thought about it. I presume that the original album version is different from the 7" versions? Great thread though innit? I mean, this is what we live for......................... Ian D
  22. Completely forgot about that Tony and that's probably where they got the tune from now that I think about it.............. So presumably the next big international ad will be snagged from Tarrantino's FANTASTIC use of Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich's "Hold Tight" from Deathproof.........? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DIwiUXCA6W0 I mean, that's a pretty effective use of a tune innit? He's very good at that................... Ian D
  23. Yep, if ever there was any doubt about the reach, emotional resonance and viabilty of a Northern Soul record to reach a mainstream international audience, then this Nike ad puts those fears to bed. This was a key record in my own musical education and one of the records which drew me into Northern Soul. The amount of interest that this will gather purely as a result of this ad is virtually incalculable. I mean the previous benchmarks were Felix Cat Food, Kentucky Fried Chicken and Lambrusco. This is a whole new league. If anything was going to provide a surge of interest in this music at a time when everyone's questioning whether it even has a future or not, I would suggest that a pan-world Nike advert is better than a kick in the derriere......... Didn't see this coming at all. Smart move by Nike and their ad agency. Maybe we're not as dead as we thought we were ay? Ian D
  24. Yep. Of course it is. Occasionally even I can get a bit puritanical about records but when it comes down to it I was brought up with all the Motown stuff plus a lot of UK only hits like "Baby Now That I Found You" and "Build Me Up Buttercup" - The Foundations, "I Feel Love Comin' On" - Felice Taylor, "Sweet Inspiration" - Johnny Johnson & The Bandwagon and UK produced Northern hits like "A Man Like Me" - Jimmy James, "What Love Brings" - Kenny Bernard, "Serving A Sentence Of Life" - Carl Douglas, "Our Love Is Getting Stronger" - Jason Knight, "Everything's Gonna Be Alright" - P.P. Arnold, "Stop What You're Doing" - The Playthings and numerous others. The Northern Soul audience in the mid 70's just loved an irrestible beat, a great song and a vocal with conviction and "Elusive" is simply another fine record in that tradition. It was the biggest record in the country at it's height and rightly so. Still a fantastic performance and I'm glad we were right on it! We generally got the best of the most 'soulful' records throughout most genres in my opinion. I mean, Babe Ruth never saw a Northern Soul classic in a zillion years and neither did we at the time........... Ian D
