  1. ORIGINAL MASTERCUTS Show 9/11 Anniversary Tribute Show Since Sunday’s show started almost 10 years to the exact minute of the 9/11 attack on New York, there’s naturally a New York flavour to this week’s show. 2. Correctomundo. But surely the musicians will be better off as a result of their recordings receiving royalties for a further 20 years? Of course it helps record companies, who only tend to recoup on roughly 3% of the acts they sign anyway. Sometimes it's hard to grasp, but recording, production, mastering, manufacturing, warehousing, distribution and all the other expenses involved in getting records to the market costs a lot of money to lay out. In 97% of cases (my estimate) that money is not recouped, so, if nothing else, it's nice to have an extra 20 years to have a chance at getting your money back. You have to bear in mind that roughly 95% of all record companies will eventually go bust, get sold or just run out of steam eventually. Ian D .

  4. ORIGINAL MASTERCUTS Show 9/11 Anniversary Tribute Show Well I seem to be doing a lot of themed shows just lately and since this show will be LIVE on the 10th anniversary of the attack on New York I’ve decided to kick off with some GREAT New York records and then a few more in the 60’s/70’s section. New York has always been a key city for me and the first place I headed to when I first went in 1976, so here’s to the good folk of New York City who have always made me feel welcome! A big shout out to all my Ibiza friends – George, Amanda & Sharon, Jason & the crew @ Sands & Es Vive, Roberto @ Wok N’ Roll, Paul Dennis and the rest of the bunch. Love to all and see you in 3 weeks! Also a chance to win 2 copies of the new Giles Peterson release “Masterpiece” on this week’s show. As per usual we have a show packed with mouth-watering records from across the eras plus the usual liberal sprinkling of killer re-edits and feel good Sunday anthems. Hope you can join me! 5. Wow, it seems my utopian vision of a major rallying point for the scene is just a dream then. I wouldn't say it would be cutting down choice though - most people on here seem to be moaning about too many venues with low attendances don't they? I guess age is a massive factor isn't it? Somehow travelling hundreds of miles every week when we were teenagers made all the sense in the world when we had bags of energy and enthusiasm. Mind you I did two all-nighters last weekend but in Ibiza and obviously a totally different type of music. Not quite the same thing over here is it....? Ian D
  6. Well, y'know, this is why we need to get smart. I've always considered Northern Soul to be the 8th wonder of the world because that's what it was to me. I've been around a lot and I can tell anyone without a shadow of a doubt that the Northern Soul scene was the most passionate scene on earth bar none. If I had enough time, I'd write a beautiful flowing eulogy to the beauty of Northern Soul but I'll save it for later in life when I can write it at leisure. In short, I'm still very passionate about the legacy of Northern Soul. It's really really historically important for numerous reasons. I really feel that the PR needs to be managed correctly and that there should be some serious interaction with the national heritage people. So, your point about technology and today's 'instant gratification' society highlights exactly why it's important to cover all angles if we want the scene to continue throughout the future. There is no reason why a monthly major 'live' event couldn't be streamed live throughout the world for those who can't attend. There's no reason why the international audience couldn't be allowed to buy original vinyl copies or digital files of the records they're hearing from the event on demand. There's no reason why the same audience wouldn't want to delve further into this incredible scene and it's history given the chance. Who wouldn't? It's not rocket science, it's merely using the technology of the day to reach your audience. I have a good overview. I have to deal with this stuff every day. I KNOW how these things work in the grand scheme of things. Effectively, if the general objective is to spread the love of Northern and Rare Soul music to new generations, then we'll have to get a lot smarter about the way we promote stuff. Expand the audience, don't reduce it. The way the scene is heading, it's in danger of becoming musically inbread and eventually irrelevent. It's important that the scene sustains. If there's an independently wealthy Northern Soul entrepreneur out there that fancies propelling this scene back into international mainstream consciousness again then PM me. Seriously. Ian D
  7. Oh I dunno Steve. With a major venue there's a palpable sense of excitement because everyone knows it's a major event and they know that most of the key players will be there. Everybody raises their game accordingly and records 'break' faster. There's nowt wrong with smaller venues but they just don't have enough impact across the overall scene IMO. Has there been a major national rallying point since Stafford in the 80's (excepting the 100 Club which is obviously London centric)? Incidentaly, I'm not complaining. I'm not the target market by any means. Virtually all nights I go to these days I enjoy regardless. It's just that it would be great to have a major event to bring people together again on a national level. Ian D
  8. No one said it would be easy Steve. The scene was fragmented when the Torch closed down and then Wigan opened up and gave everyone a central focus again. When Cleethorpes Pier opened there was no precedent at all on the East Coast prior to that, but, once again, the pier supplied the scene with a major east coast focus. Mary Chapman didn't have any doubts when she set it up. Maybe promoters and DJ's need to start thinking big again. The only way to get this scene unified and buzzing properly again, will be to provide a venue that assembles all the key current DJ's on a monthly basis in one major venue so they can play to a regular massive audience. Oldies can be supplied in another room for those who like the tried and tested. Everything's far too fragmented at present and there's no 100% 'must attend' major event for people's calendars. When someone eventually grabs that mantle like the Chris Burtons, Russ Winstanleys and Mary Chapmans of yesteryear did, then the scene has a chance of growing again. In my humble opinion of course....... Ian D
  9. Tony Drake will be on an upcoming Backbeats CD in mid October. Ian D
  10. I think there needs to be a major national monthly event that can blow out all other competition in the 'must attend' stakes. We're talking 2000+ every month, best DJ's, great U.S. live acts when they're around and all the facilities to keep the various customers happy. A monthly Prestatyn basically..... The scene is just way too fragmented at the moment. It needs a big-league rallying point again. The right-minded promoters and key DJ's need to take the initiative and create a key monthly event that will attract everyone. Maybe easier said than done obviously......... Ian D

  13. There's actually 100's of 'em over here. 'Twas another one of those records which was around in bulk in the 70's - a regular 50p record back then and you couldn't give it away! I gather it's the "Don't You Know You're The Yes" side that people want these days isn't it? Ian D

  15. Very timely Roger. I've been re-reviewing the career of Nick & Val since mid this week. They're basically right up there with the greatest songwriters in music history and they've been doing it for 5 decades which is astonishing. Here's a clip from February this year where they filmed a promo film for a new act they signed - Terry Lavell. It's an utterly brilliant song which I think out does Valentino's "I Was Born This Way" in terms of Gay anthems (not that I'm an expert by any means). However, then I remembered that Sylvester got his breakthrough hit with Ashford & Simpson's "Over & Over" so they have form in this area. It's got that whole Ashford & Simpson late 70's rhythm vibe going on and obviously the delivery is too cheesy for most tastes, but underneath all that, there's a great song with all the traditional Ashford & Simpson hallmarks. Plus good to see Val on keyboards and Nick grooving away in the background. I presume it was filmed at their club in New York but maybe someone can verify......? Terry Lavell - Born This Way - Ashford & Simpson Video Clip From February This Year Also, gratuitious plug here, but I have an Ashford & Simpson tribute coming up LIVE at 2.00pm today which covers a huge body of their work. 2 hours worth in fact 'cos every tune is connected with Nick & Val....... August Bank Holiday 28/08/11 - ORIGINAL MASTERCUTS Ashford & Simpson Special Tribute Show! Following the sad news of Nicholas Ashford’s passing away last week, we’re doing an ORIGINAL MASTERCUTS Ashford & Simpson bank holiday special which will feature two hours of wonderful music from the last 4 decades, all of which involved Nick Ashford & Valerie Simpson in different capacities, whether as solo and duet artists or writers, producers and arrangers. It’s a breath-taking look at a pair of careers that stretched from the mid 60’s to February 2011. The fact that Val Simpson met Nick Ashford on a park bench when he was down and out in New York simply adds to the mythology of two of the greatest songwriters of all time. I had the pleasure working with Val & Nick in the early 80’s when I promoted “Solid” for Capitol/EMI and watched it become a smash in the UK. I hooked up with them again in 2007 when I interviewed them before their last UK gig at the Luxury Soul Weekender in Birmingham and, as always, it was a pleasure. Val was very prim and proper, sat very gracefully and formally in a table chair and allowed me to commence the interview. Nick was sprawled out on the sofa with legs akimbo and a huge grin on his face. He laughed like a hyena throughout the interview, especially when I asked Val what inspired the lyrics to “Let’s Go Get Stoned”, their first bona fide hit with Ray Charles. I’m trying to dig the interview out because it was great so I’ll post up when I get my hands on it! RIP Nick! Anyway, this show will be a perfect soundtrack to a bank holiday weekend, so if you’re around then try and join me and the rest of the gang this Sunday afternoon LIVE for 2 hours of pure Soul pleasure! 18. Yep, reliability, quick and efficient service, a professional approach and smart packaging is absolutely worth a premium for many people. Also I think the amount of imagination and effort people put into their listings makes a major difference at the point of purchase. There was a story on BBC 1 today about the 7 new e-bay millionaires (in turnover) that are less than a year old. The business they decided to focus on was a new UK based CD seller who now has 40 employees and 10's of 1000's of regular customers. That's serious business and I've never even heard of 'em LOL...... It's kinda good news in a way. It proves that there's a huge worldwide audience for music, who still trust in physical products and want to buy them quickly and efficiently from a reliable seller. 21. Blimey. With those sort of prices I'm tempted to whack up my White Label Friends & Co 12" promo. What would your guy pay for that Sebastian? Fancy being a broker mate? Ian D
  22. I sold my original to John Vincent in the late 90's for around £60. It's actually really damn rare and one of those records that you just never seem to find. Very popular in it's day and sounds better to my ears then a lot of the newer funky stuff but I would say that wouldn't I lol..... Ian D
  23. Perfect. Exactly what I was looking for Dave. Many thanks! Can you knock off a quick calc for an average US 60's album please? Ian D
  24. Which was the high point of August thus far........... Have you got into groove measuring yet Bob? There's whole new world right there........... Ian D
