I think this is a UK pressing plant that's doing these. Any ideas anyone? Ian D

I noticed that too. Their previous CD packages would have sold lousily on release so would have probably never been re-manufactured so there's really not that many around. However, there are these on Discogs:- https://www.discogs.com/Flaming-Ember-Westbound-N9-The-Hot-Wax-Sessions/release/710435 Ian D

Normanton Miners Club sometime early 70s on a Tuesday night I think. My set was fine but tempered with the fact that trouble was brewing between the locals and the Northern mob who were all coming down after a long weekend with several beyond control and falling over tables, knocking drinks flying etc, etc. So I knew it was gonna go off and got ready for a quick exit with records intact if poss. Only just made it, they were lobbing bricks at the car as I hauled ass out of the car park. Close call. Ian D

The rare soul scene in Europe and beyond
Ian Dewhirst replied to Little-stevie's topic in All About the SOUL
For those into Contemporary Soul we have Bolsoul coming up in Croatia 7th-14 October featuring exclusive live performances from Jarrod Lawson, Tracy Hamlin and Rose Vincent plus 20 of the UKs most loved contemporary Soul music DJs. www.Bolsoul.com Ian D -
Just to clear up any confusion, the person who owns the copyright on a sound recording, is the person that paid for the recording of it in most circumstances. If an artist went in the studio and paid for the recording, the studio time, the musicians, engineer etc, then they would own their recordings and could do with them what they wanted. 99% of recordings remain un-recouped, i.e. they don't bring in enough money to cover the costs of recording, studio time, engineer, mastering, statutory payments, manufacturing, artwork, distribution, marketing and promotion. The other 1% do OK and make everyone money generally. The percentage chance of anyone making decent money from recorded music is ridiculously slim at the best of times. Just saying.... Ian D

Certain things couldn't be included due to legal issues and some things that were thought to be P&P owned turned out not be P&P owned. There's almost zero documentation on much of the stuff so this is pretty much the best we could do under the circumstances. Bill Brewster compiled these mainly for the Disco collectors and crate-diggers audiences to be fair...... Ian D

I'd like to know what the hit rate was. The vast majority of 12"'s from that era have not held any kind of value and there's warehouses and collections full of the stuff. Discogs is rammed to the gills with it. It reads nicely but I'd be surprised if it didn't contain 98% of clunkers. Ian D

Racism at NS venues; did/does it happen
Ian Dewhirst replied to Ady Croasdell's topic in All About the SOUL
First got into Northern with Al Horseford from Huddersfield who's Dad used to run the Reggae Club in Huddersfield (and was the venue for Taurus - a Northern Soul night). My then flatmate was a black guy guy called Kelly who loved the dance moves and relentlessly practised them at home until he caved in the ceiling of the flat below with his backdrops. Used to buy records regularly from Mopsy from Sheffield, who never altered his look or attitude for the Northern scene but still managed to dig up serious records. Went out with Del from Huddersfield who was probably the most elegant and best-dressed black woman on the scene back then and we'd regularly go to Blackpool, Wigan and Cleethorpes along with Steve Caesar from Leeds, who was a formidable dancer himself. I can't remember any out and out racism but really the best people to comment would be the black people who attended back in the day. It's worth bearing in mind that attitudes were far less tolerant in the early to mid 70s and racism generally was much more rampart and the National Front were very active at that time. If anything, the Northern Soul scene was a refuge away from everyday racism. Ian D -

Sandi Sheldon. Blimey. I thought that was pretty much a deffo for most collections and not particularly rare. Had it a few times myself...... Ian D -
If I were you, I'd contact e-bay. Looks like someone is using this as a tester....... Ian D

Ian Dewhirst replied to Pauldonnelly's topic in Look At Your Box
Yep, I seem to remember one with a spoken intro and the other goes straight into the beat......? Ian D -
All from the master tapes to my knowledge. How they never released this as a single I'll never know. It would've been a monster Northern track had it ever been available back in the day. What a record! Barbara McNair 'Lone Lonely Town' Ian D

The Beatles, Stax And A Ric-Tic Question
Ian Dewhirst replied to maslar's topic in All About the SOUL
Interesting. I didn't know George was such a soul music devotee. I wonder when they bumped into Doris Troy then? I often wondered where the Doris Troy/Billy Preston connections were made........ Ian D -

This is the sort of surprise that most of us dream of. Well done! Ian D -
Remember when you had to force The Precisions on people for 25p in a swap deal just to get rid of 'em? I was always quite partial to those nice white Canadian Drew copies of "If This Is Love" that were around in quantity too. I saw more copies of the Precisions than most UK hits at the time lol..... Lots of Bluesy/RnB/Duke/Chess and Checker type stuff as well as mainstream U.S. Motown in the stuff I went through too... Good memory Rick! Ian D

I didn't know it had been booted but this sure looked like one and he wanted £20 for it anyway, so I passed...... Ian D

Mmm. The guy in the shop had a Joey Delorenzo which came from the same load. It looked like a boot to me so I passed on it but I did wonder what that was doing with the other stuff. Should I nip back and get it....? Ian D
-
These have been wholesaled in a load of places Pete. Even one of my local shops had a bunch of these along with some quantity of some really old Selecta pressings. The story I got told was that this was all dead stock which had been laying around in a cellar for 20 odd years. Some of the stock looked slightly water or storage damaged to me and some of those pressings indicated that this was in fact dead stock. Ian D

Another one of mine Dave. I keep telling people to buy 'em whilst they're out! Ian D -
I did exactly the same thing Ivor. Only played IHSMF for several years until I flipped it a few years later and got a pleasant surprise. Weird ay? Ian D
