  1. Actually I went for further clarication today and Kenny says they went to Detroit to record "Ain't It Baby" which kinda makes a bit more sense. "The Joke's On You" was deffo a Philly recording. Apologies for the misinformation in the title. Ian D
  2. Hi, Last call for masters and then I'm done touch wood. Does anyone have decent quality WAV files on the following pretty please? Let The Music Play - Didi Noel You Don't Mean It - The Ohio Players Please PM urgently if you do. Many thanks, Ian D
  3. Brilliant record. Sold mine to Blake Helliwell 15 years ago......... Ian D
  4. Yep, I thought it was a priceless afternoon too! Kenny's still buzzed from the interview - he woke up @ 4.00am raring to go today LOL. He's currently being grilled by Robbie Vincent on Jazz FM and then we're over to Radio 2 with Trevor M and then a Mojo interview with Geoff Brown so another full on day. So pleased you dropped in Dave. Kenny was just knocked out with the level of knowledge over here plus what a lovely guy! He actually mentioned you in the cab this morning so you're in the inner circle now mate........ Ian D
  5. Sold mine to Sam in the 80's. I'd love to hear some of those again. It never turned up much (I think I may have found it in a publishers office in the U.S.) so it's pretty rare.......... Ian D
  6. ....was recorded at Ed Wingate's studio in Detroit with Lebaron Taylor! Surprised the hell out of me.but that was just one of the gems that came out today when Richard Searling interviewed Kenny Gamble for the Philadelphia International Records 40th Anniversary kicking off in January. Fascinating stuff........... Soon as it's edited we'll get it put up! Ian D
  7. Sorry but that's not really correct and certainly not the whole reason why a record may be rare. Marketing and Promotion can sell a lot of crap for sure, but there's hundreds of rare records that simply weren't good enough in terms of the competition at the time. "So Sweet So Satisfying" simply is not that great - it certainly didn't have chart potential at the time IMO. Rare for sure but not a patch on "Wait 'Til I Get To Know You" and my guess is that's probably what the Chicago radio DJ's said when they were serviced with it at the time. Tuff were certainly capable of selling records (didn't they have a huge seller with the Jaynetts record?), so I doubt they would have let a potential hit slip away if it were down to them..... Ian D
  8. The power of the internet! Many many thanks to everyone who responded and helped out here, with extra special thanks to Kris Holmes, TSU Tomatoes and VepT5 es. I managed to fill everything, except the Billy Paul 12" of "False Faces" (and that may yet be coming), so, all in all, not a bad hit rate in 48 hours. Got my ass out of a sling guys, so once again, many thanks to all! Ian D

  10. As per usual I'm chasing down masters for the next 10 Backbeats and whilst I've had a 94% hit rate so far, there's always a few stragglers...... If anyone can lend/supply the following on preferably WAV file or vinyl very quickly, then I'll supply a fawning thankyou credit on the finished CD's and throw in a couple of CD's from the Harmless/Backbeats catalogue. 11. Well after that KHB (King Hell Bastard) night on Friday night @ the Caf De Paris celebrating Jamie Hargreaves 40th birthday I was a 'lil the worse for wear on Sunday. Very delicate in fact. The abseiling burlesque display on Friday was a lot more stimulating than Alan and Dean in the studio LOL..... Typically whenever we get together for a show SOMETHING goes wrong LOL and this week we managed to lose the Starpoint website on Sunday for reasons none of us understand. I don't think it was anything to do with us but more of an internet snafu. Anyway many apologies for those who couldn't listen live. Good job we record and provide a link ay? It's right below the playlist..... Anyway, it was great fun as usual and lovely to have Dean over to join in the idle banter! 12. Still recovering from we call in the trade a KHB (King Hell Bastard) night on Friday night @ the Caf De Paris celebrating Jamie Hargreaves 40th birthday. Happy birthday Jamie - you sure know how to throw a party! That's the first time myself and my old mucker Paul Schofield have played a central London venue together and I can't think off a better venue to break our cherry. It's not every night you get trapezing burlesque girls swinging overhead. My kinda gig LOL.... Other than that, it's busy as hell right now with the next 10 Backbeats albums ready for a Boxing Day release and the preparations for the Philadelphia International Records 40th Anniversary and four brand new releases in January and February. Kenny Gamble - the owner of PIR will in the UK in 10 days for some exclusive interviews! And somehow, amidst all this madness, I managed to get a show together! Plus we're having a mini-party today 'cos it's Al's birthday! So both the original founders will be LIVE in the studio! Six Million Steps Presents The Original Mastercuts Show LIVE with Ian Dewhirst & Alan Champ between 2.00-4.00pm on Sunday 6th November 2011 on everyone's favourite Soul station www.starpointradio.com. 13. Looks a great watch for vinyl sniffers LOL.... https://www.sounditoutdoc.com/ Ian D
  14. Soundburger is pretty cool and very portable. Ian D
  15. Actually for me James Brown really was Soul Brother No 1. I think he created the term and his credentials are pretty flawless in terms of his impact and power when he was at his height. Plus an incredible career span as well. He's never been my favourite artist but I love his records, his passion, his commitment, his work ethic and his no-compromise attitude which was pretty revolutionary at the time. I think he deserves it. When the USA was imploding in the riots of the late 60's, the US governement called on James Brown for help and he did. Black communities throughout the US listened to Soul Brother No.1 because that's undoubtably what he was in the late 60's and early 70's. No one else could have reached into the black community with the level of respect that James Brown commanded and for that reason I believe that he is the true owner of the title. No contest. Ian D
  16. Yep, I guess so. What I was suggesting was whether the Impressions version acted as a kind of demo for the Stairsteps & Cubie one? I presume it's exactly the same backing track and they just re-recorded the vocals. It'd be interesting to know how far apart the recordings were? It may have been just days, since both versions came out at around the same time. The Five Stairsteps (and Cubie) was undoubtably the more commercial of the two, that's for sure. Ian D
  17. But surely Curtis would have recorded it with the Impressions first wouldn't he? I presume that Curtis probably had it in the can ready to go and then gave it to the Five Stairsteps......and Cubie on the basis that it was a cute song and would probably fit the guys, gal & 3 year old kid better..........? Ian D
  18. We're using The Stairsteps "I'm The One Who Loves You" on a forthcoming Backbeats. We actually included the Impressions version of "Stay Close To Me" on another volume 'cos most people know the Stairsteps (and Cubie) version but not the Impressions which is more straightforward and Curtis sings it beautifully........ Ian D
  19. Maybe they were just invisible.....? Well, it was always a weird fit for Alohe and Cubie was a last minute add-on so if anyone was going to leave........ Ian D
  20. Who was in and who was out when they went to "Second Resurrection" on Dark Horse then? I always wondered how come they signed to George Harrison's label as well. From Curtis to George Harrison is an interesting move. Ian D
  21. OK, that's 3 potential lead singers in the course of this one thread - Cubie, Clarence or Keni? I'm gonna have to listen now 'cos I always thought it was a bird called Cubie...... ........and if it was Keni I'll rib him about his balls not dropping when he sang that! But it's Clarence right? Ian D
  22. Cubie isn't a she??? Dammit. What kind of a name for a bloke is Cubie? No wonder it's confusung.......... In that case, I wonder how Alohe felt when Cubie butted in.........? Bloody kids stealing all the limelight and all that..... But if I was Cubie I'd be wondering why the font on my name on the label is reduced to lower case and why did they leave my name off the Billboard ad? Ian D
  23. Whoever proof-read that ad needs shooting! They missed off Cubie for God's sake! Come to think of it, who the hell was Cubie anyway? What's her story I wonder? I always felt a bit sorry for Cuby. It always felt like she was a bit of an add-on. The Five Stairsteps...and.....er...Cubie........ Anyone know what happened to her? Ian D
  24. Probably. I haven't seen nor heard of him since the mid 70's and that is 35 + years ago. RIP Bob. Ian D
