  1. all very interesting....this is my opinion....we can all name tunes that cross borders between different soul sub genres and have been played and accepted over the years....but as for there being out and out funk SETS played at northern soul events...i think this would be a big mistake....one reason why people have and will always travel from all over the country to a northern event is that it is DIFFERENT to what most clubs are playing...if i want funky soul/funky modern or whatever i dont need to leave bristol ,there is a dozen or more bars and clubs playing the same stuff all weekend... like it or not MOST modern rooms havnt got the atmosphere of the main rooms and couldnt pull the crowds on their own...again that kinda stuff is played in loads of bars every weekend as it is more mainstream than 60s...it has a different feel ,vibe or whatever you wanna call it.... people have mentioned reggae and ska...i love both from early 60s bluebeat to the latest bashment(hardcore ragga !)....but although the 60s and very early 70s reggae has got a similiar vibe to most northern(as they copied and were influenced by it !)and may work ina third mixed room i wouldnt wanna hear roots or ragga a completely different feel.... sometimes if you try and please everyone.... you end up pleasing no one !
  2. saw this on south west soul forum the other day, cool looking vid and like the nicole willis and ami trax im sure it will get some youngsters looking for the real thing....many years ago i got into the new dance craze of two tone which made me discover prince buster, trojan and so on... to answer the question why bother ? well i dont suppose she could write a tune half as good that would get people around the world knowing her name !
  3. i cant believe he is serious....must be either a soulie havin a laugh or someone who knows soulies pay big ammounts for tunes and is taking the piss !....i know sellers will "big things up a bit" but he just cant be serious......can he?
  4. havnt got a scan for you but manships bootleg guide says...."the originals are mostly black/white promos.Stock copies are 3 colours yellow/brown logo with black lettering.bootlegs are only yellow/black with a bevelled egde before the run in"....im sure you know the logo of tuff in capitol letters with musical notes either side....hope this helps....bootleg guide is a top book...essential
  5. top tune on my wants....as are "what more" and "dont make promises" which was covered by weller on the studio 150 lp.... into zz hill at the moment, recently got gimme gimme and no more doggin...which im thinkin meant something else in 60s usa !
  6. all good points....in the 80s i was in norwich now im in bristol some friends havnt heard tunes that were huge back then for me and vice versa some of their faves from back then ive never heard... new discoveries are always great especially as a collector aswell as dj/dancer but shouldnt be played out just because they are new.. they should be of the same quality of the tune they are replacing...would rather have a night of known killers than a night of unknown fillers to be honest !....
  7. i picked up one at the new untouchables gig in brum the other weekend cos it looked interesting....its red !....a small hole in the middle ,uk style.with grip...has 4 trax mel britt"shell come running back"c.cooper"heartaches away"frankie carr"you should of held on" and don parker "im packin up"....its a promo-not for sale....the numbers WAR/EP/483 and also has53 scratched in the run out groove....produced by WARREN RECORDINGS,LONDON NW4 4LP from tapes supplied, and also says all trax written and produced by "spud and ashley" in the magic studio....oh and its O.O.T.P with no pics....any info ?
  8. shame such a talented singer didnt do more stompers like this !
  9. yep !....on more than one occasion
  10. not sure about the above list but im supporting kev on the dex when he comes to bristol to launch the new version of this book and the flyers have the front cover on them with sidney barnes"standing on solid ground" and mandrills too late on so there are new additions as these arnt in my old copy as for the book no one one will agree 100% which kev states in the book...its just his observation of dancefloor activity over the years...i think its a great "coffee table book " something you can pick up when you have some spare time and put down without losing your place !....aswell as the top 500 chart there are also lots of other interesting facts and charts which everyone who is into soul would love....or should love !! whatever you think of kev give it a go... a great xmas prezzie......now wheres my cheque !!
  11. i saw this and had to wonder...but thats ebay..sometimes you can pick something up dirt cheap but there are people who pay way over the top for things....perhaps they live miles away from any record shops and have yet to find dealers on the web.....makes me laugh at some of the records sellers describe as rare too..what/judy street on grapevine for instance.....also saw night owl boot starting at £20!...needless to say no bids
  12. still loads of big skinnyheads although no nazi salutes thank god !...to be fair i only do a few rallies nowadays and although i didnt witness it ive been told there were a couple of incidents at exmouth this year....sometimes it just seems theres an underlying atmosphere where the smallest thing could result in it kickin off, something i never feel amoungst the biggest tuffest lookin soulies....or maybe im gettin paro in my old age!!
  13. to be honest never seen nothin but good manners....sadly the scooter scene is still a little dodgy at times !
  14. my older brother done the 70s where i came along in the 80s...every 3 weeks i was on a scooter rally where they had all nighters with live acts such as edwin starr mary wells, eddie holman and jj barnes and the biggest numbers ever ,sadly now the nites seem to finish at 2 !..but in between that we had regular "back st "soul nites in norwich aswell as the fleet and wirrina in peterborough...
  15. im drowning/viki adams...yellow/blue stop label.. .only £3..advertised as original.. ..but is it ??
  16. thanx for clearing that up...i think !
  17. this maybe an easy one for you lot of knowledgable soulies !....but ive been told 2 different things !....what are the original okehs....small 45 or large ??....as i have both with stamped numbers....been told small 45 original...stamped large 45 legit reissue....but also seen ads on ebay saying large 45 original
  18. wont bother me although i obviously want them to win(my boss is south african)..i will be playing at a new nite in yate but the venue has a big screen...although ive played two venues over the last couple of weeks which have clashed with tv games and both have been slow too start
  19. used to play a venue where the floortiles behing the dex were dangerously slippery...great !....except i had to share them with a dj who would spill his lager all over the floor !...so yeah nothing worse than a sticky dancefloor
  20. love the delroy wilson !...have you heard the "wailers" original on studio one ?..beautiful soulful ballad with harmonies like the impressions
  21. mama didnt lie/jan bradley chess see you at the gogo/dobie gray...charger walk tall/verdelle smith...capitol keep him/barbara mason...volcano misery/dynamics...big top mind messed up-what i want to know/james carr...goldwax selfish one/jackie ross...chess standing in the shadows of love/dee dee sharp...cameo such a pretty thing/gene chandler...checker youre losing me/barbara lynn...atlantic...all for under £60 total still waitin for paypal to validate my account before i can pay for some others ive won on ebay...why do banks take forever let alone the post !!
  22. personally i havnt got a prob with boots UNTIL some one trys to pass it off as the real deal so i think its a good thing if they dont look exactly the same...and if someone pays an arm and a leg for a beautiful original copy at least he gets more for his money than just the tune
  23. i think the remix sounds good if you like new dance music and overall its a good thing lets face it its not the first time and wont be the last time...music has always looked back and stole bits of quality tunes...and as little roy says in reggae "imitation wont live long, origination will be strong !"...at least if you play a crap venue/pub full of "normal" people you can play the original instead of a boring motown classic like baby love !! i think its good when youngsters get into northern..ive seen them look on dancers at soul nites like theyre from mars but a bit later they are tryin to copy there moves and even doin break dance moves some of which are not all that different...and its great at a nighter seeing grown up kids of soulies doin the right moves..
  24. its a shame hes not going ahead with the idea of a film..maybe for a company like film 4....there are so many books out there already, always thought "crackin up over you " would make a great film...great twist at the end in keepin with todays films, i think the time is right .aswell as the kids musical hairspray..theres a film out sometime soon about usa mods "birds can fly"...the trailer looks ok...im sure us brits could do it better
  25. my daughters into crap rnb too, used to moan about me playing northern in the car but doesnt anymore, she wanted to go see "hairspray " the other week,i wasnt so sure at first but as it turned out to be about when us music was changing from rock n roll to rnb/soul i enjoyed it too....now she wants the cd..even queen latifahs character was called big maybelle....so if the snake charts too its gotta be good...youngblood in the scene is always good however they get here.. the half hour northern slots at clubs mentioned earlier reminds me of the 70s school disco/youth clubs when all the people who werent into it would stand in circles watching the dancers do there stuff...
