i also think late means about 12....and the fact that a lot of people wont bother is probably the reason why promoters use it instead of the time !!

yeah i know the one...thats a shame hes had a shop along that street forever...bought some good tunes off him over the years...will probably nip in there over the hols and get a couple -
maybe if theyre using them new cd thingys or downloading...if a vinyl dj wants to make money(good or bad) dont play reggae or soul !...take out your transport etc and you wont have enuff for a couple of boots !....dont get me wrong there are times when my dj money has helped me out but at the end of the year ive still spent far more than ive earnt...but after nearly twenty years i still love it !

i think he means some promoters do not respect djs and pay them shit money and it wont change cos there will always be shit loads of djs who will do it for the love and not the dosh.....right ?

Demise Of The Traditional Record Shop
Spacehopper replied to phatspinner's topic in All About the SOUL
john, which shop is closing down ?....im based in bristol now but am back in norwich to see the folks for the hols...always nip in shops when im there....anything on next week ?? here in bristol weve seen a few close over the last 10 years or so....only have rubber soul still open for northern...and anything good doesnt stay on the shelves long !..we have a great little record fair full of teddy boys selling their northern/rnb cheap sadly they are starting to realise what they have now....i do tend to but mainly off ebay ,i cant even afford most internet dealers prices(although sean is very fair !)...why pay £50 for a tune that will turn up on ebay for a tenner !...on original...the other day i got ike and tina on a stamped tangerine for £7 from germany and it had arrived before some i had "won" from uk within a week !...so how could a shop compete with that was chatting to a friend whos a cd dj and he has just downloaded thousands of tunes from real obscure reggae and ska acts that after years of collecting he still had never heard of...and all for free !....cd shops watch out ! -
why ??...maybe theyre skint !..and theyre too old to compete in the rnb charts with people like akon
-
ray charles version is wicked too !!

lots of good points and the northern scene is no more hypocritcal than any other...it reminds me of back in the late 80s while djing reggae in norwich trying to get people into the real deal and all they asked for was ub40..it was the time of the labour of love lp of covers.....i knew that the original artists got sod all at the time of recording and thought the same was probably true now....much later i found out that a lot of their careers had restarted since that lp and the later trojan reissues of those trax ub40 covered and are now better off than theyve ever been with concerts world wide not just in the uk and all most all were thankful to ub40 for that.....ok ub40s versions were still s*** but people did start lookin to the originals as i had done when i heard two tone etc years earlier as far as originals /reissues...i play both depending on the gig...i cant afford some of the top 500 on original but at a scooter rally for xample they wanna here it and dont give a s*** what format its on.....if i do a soul gig i can play all originals...a lot of semi knowns which are not worth as much but still great dancers.....and what if there wasnt bootlegs/re issues back in the 70s/80s when we were not so wealthy and no internet and dealers everywhere...would the scene had grown ??....or kept going im not so sure...before the days of downloading and cds bootlegs were all that was available for some...those have either got out of the scene or have replaced them with originals as a lot who buy boots now will hopefully do in years to come

im never up early enuff on a sunday for boot sales !....was at a mates last week he done them years ago in the late 80s and once got a box of dozens of mint uk demos on labels like stateside, columbia, deccca, phillips etc for a few quid...they didnt want them didnt think they were worth f all.....i was looking through them..very nice !....lots of 60s mod/freak and garage aswell as soul.....hadnt even heard of some of the acts but great trax...dont suppose that would happen again
-
wise words from a youngster..very refreshing but do not be put off because of internet forums...personally i think a lot of things are said via a keyboard that maybe wouldnt face to face...its one of the drawbacks of tinternet and not just soul sites let alone this one !...although the majority do not necessarily hold those views posted over the years ive been a regular in many different scenes as music is everything...and whether it be scooter do,a reggae night where im the only white face, drum and bass, stomping in a somerset field all night with a load of ravers or your high st rnb/funky house shit you cannot beat a northern crowd when you are out and about, the most polite and passionate bunch ever where the music is all that counts...this is all that matters at the end of the day

was just quoting the book ! dont really know f*** all !.... good question about the legit 70s reissue...i suspect as it was legit they wouldnt be tryng to copy the original label to fool anyone so would be obvious reissue whatever the number....??

IF YOU HAVNT GOT JMS BOOTLEG GUIDE...GET IT !...ESSENTIAL... DELTA NUMBERS ARE MONARCH RECORDINGS (MR)STAMPS AND ARE DATED FROM 34320 IN 1960 TO 78959 IN DEC69...AS THEY PRESSED A LOT OF THE BOOTS IN THE 70S THE NUMBERS BY THEN WERE INTO THE "10S" SO A 60S CLASSIC WITH THE NUMBER 101987 WOULD HAVE BEEN ABOUT 74

now this thread is a bit anorak ish..if my mrs reads this shes gonna take the p.... ive tried all different ways....genre,play out /play home,old/new,orig/reissue,us/uk etc...lables ok when you got loads on a lable...i stil find the best way is alphabetical..full stop...its the only way you can go almost straight to a tune and not spend hours flicking through and starting to panic thinkin youve lost one or its been pinched !!

(new) Northern Soul Top 500 Book Launch Event
Spacehopper replied to Andybellwood's topic in All About the SOUL
great set....dont know about the new book but i would say half of that set was in the old one....cos even if you stick to the 500 you dont have to play the snake or "what"ever.... i will be playing at the bristol "top 500" nite tomorrow and as there are now 5 local djs!! will only get a half hour set but like that set will not just play from the book , will include some of my present faves...as long as they are dancers eh ? -
im a kinda reformed smoker...having smoked baccy with weed for 20 years(but not fags)....then i got diabetes and had to stop the baccy...although doc said weed was ok i still gave that up as neat weed is great but having the munchies and being diabetic isnt !...anyway i understand the craving and not enjoying your nights out as i was like this once craving for a spliff(which wasnt half as bad with neat weed i might add !)...i would leave places early to go home for a spliff...couldnt have a sneaky skunk one..if you tried all heads would turn instantly!.... now ive stopped and dont miss it,although it was a major thing in my life for so long,i love coming home not smelling of smoke..and o dont miss standing in a club as someone exhales in your face ! as a dj it does ruin the night a bit when people are constantly leaving every 15 mins, especialy in small soul nights in the south west that are only half full anyway ! i dont think petitions ever work and i dont think this or any goverment will do a u turn on this one... there should be rooms for smokers..and i dont feel sorry for bar staff as most ive known are smokers anyway and if not they dont have to do that job...but overall im for the ban..and remeber if you give up you will have more money to spend on vinyl or going to another nighter !!

Northern Soul - What Are The Worst Mixes?
Spacehopper replied to Ian Dewhirst's topic in All About the SOUL
i suppose being independant sometimes they didnt have the money to keep remixing or pay for the best studio engineers..someone mentioned motown always being good...by the md 60s berry gordy would have had the cash to pay or rather keep the best engineers and the studio time (as he owned it) to remix something right -
Northern Soul - What Are The Worst Mixes?
Spacehopper replied to Ian Dewhirst's topic in All About the SOUL
was gonna say the malibus and betty boo on grapevine, also sam and kitty (ive got something good)on grapevine dont seem to have any "tops" sounds like your tweeters have blown but maybe not the actual recording studio at fault more the repressing although not all grapevine are like it... also "ill take love" by lee lamont on backbeat overall sound is good but the drums sound like they are being played in the next room !..almost jamaican studio one sound but it still has enuff treble..i kinda like it thoough -
you probably got them but a couple of cheapie faves of mine are.. lou rawls /when love goes wrong and verdelle smith/walk tall

took my daughter to see hairspray..thought i was gonna be bored shitless..but it was alright ...some good tunes and funny but had a serious message too about black music being heard for the first time on tv etc....queen latifa was even called "big maybelle"..she had a record shop...kept looking at the covers and being an anorak as some werent even out when this was supposed to be based....a good xmas prezzie for your kids...would rather sit through that a hundred times than some that are out there!

Playing Rare Originals @ Venues: Does It Make Sense?
Spacehopper replied to Ian Dewhirst's topic in All About the SOUL
great debate..these are my opinions... laptop djs as with SOME cd djs are not collectors so do not have the passion of someone who searches out and spends all of their spare hard earned cash on vinyl...ive seen djs sitting with 2 laptops pressing numbers BORING as bearsy said if you only have 100 tunes you are thinking about your set all week...if you take yor whole colection ...you wouldnt bother having money doesnt make you a good dj you can still buy expensive shit...and even having the best tunes doesnt mean you play the best sets !...a lot of the big money tunes have been played to death, there are so many top tunes that are semi known and under £50...most of my tunes i play out are this kinda price(unless i play a scooter do and use boots /reissues etc) and as i have a shit paid job are worth loads to me ..i have a couple in the 3 figure bracket and i still play them...i have some rare as rocking horse shit reggae dubplate acetates but i still play them..even at home! i understand about not wanting to wear a tune out but records are for playing at the end of the day...and if you have boxes full as most of us do you dont play the same tunes week in week out...do you ?...if you are that worried take your own needles as for vinyl dieing out it depends on your musical tastes...next time you are in virgin checkout the ever INCREASING vinyl section of indie sevens, picture discs, coloured vinyl...sevens are still huge on the reggae scene both old and new...and i hope and to be honest think they will always be the driving force behind northern -
hi im a delivery driver based in bristol and to be honest theres not much there in the way of shops.... d'vinyl ..mackintosh place (on the junction of crwys rd/albany rd,A469 and city rd b4261) shit loads of secondhand stuff 60s 70s and indie but not much northern and theres a little shop just around the corner from that on inverness place .i think, opposite tesco...again loads of shit but if you look ive had....peaches and cream ikettes german polydor demo for £2,autumn leaves/jackie trent,uk pye for £1,mess up a good good thing fontella and bobby.. chekkar £1 headlines/chris farlowe..immediate £1....but you have to look through loads of shalamar ,cilla black etc and i think its only open wed-sat afternoons not sure about the centre cos theres no where to park my van ! ofcourse if youre moving to sth wales sean chapman is local loads of top tunes at top prices......... but he hasnt got a shop happy hunting
