last night/markeys,until i was reminded recently i completely forgot everyone one would shout out bollox !! to it
-
can remember that !...although i thought it was clacton but all my memories kinda blur into one...with good reason !!...can remember a wet t shirt comp that got very out of hand...a couple of the girls stripped completely and and were up for it but the lads werent..too much drink !...was hard to see so many people on stage, a friend of ours was in the comp and convinced they were payed strippers....was the night when the fire hoses were sprayed and lights swung on til they fell from the ceiling...think it was a butlins that was about to close anyway....crazy days....but tony class was/is a legend on the scooter scene
-
think i payed 15 for mine....think sean chapman may have one for a tenner !
-
yes it was scootermania...wicked magazine and a top bloke..what happened to him ??? the best daze of my life without a doubt, like so many after two tonw and punk got shite i was dabblin with "new"mod scene in 83 until i went on a national rally that is....went in jam shoes and dog trooth sta-press within 3 weeks by the next one i had air-wair and army greens.....but i am proud to say not one of my scoots has ever had any mirrors or extra lights on it !!! northern tunes that take me back are.... hes coming home/beverly ann right track/billy butler i wanna give you tomorrow/benny troy shoes/bobby bland champion/willie mitchell i play at a lot of scooter gigs around the south west and played at iow, margate and the winter warmer at hemsby last year and while there are a lot of "real" soul fans in the soul rooms who know their stuff all the "over played " stuff you wont hear at soul nights still fills the floor and everyone still loves it with the same passion they did 20 odd years ago.... the debate about too much northern on rallies or the "same old same old debate "is often discussed on scooter forums but the truth is thats what the majority of people their want...
-
have to agree "i cant rest" is one of my present faves...always get people asking about it when i play it....melodies give me goosebumps and the lyrics are wicked...one for the "other half has left" post...i walk the streets in the rainy weather, wishing we were back together

Who Are The Dj's On Here, And What Styles They Play
Spacehopper replied to a topic in All About the SOUL
agree entirely about your views on the written word....in fact theres a bit of a feud between a couple of scooterists down here in bristol because of things said on a keyboard, nearly kicked off at my scooter do on saturday...think it still might...and as i get on with almost everyone im kinda stuck in the middle !! no need to apologise....the new soul night we have started could have potential....last friday was the first one and we lost money...if it takes off like im hoping it will then there maybe room for guest djs and i will be in touch -

no fingers" my opinion" post wasnt aimed at you or anyone, too many post to remember what anyone person had said to be honest !....it was just my take on things after reading all the posts.... when i said "never been easier" i meant you can reach hundreds of people without leaving your house to advertise your gigs where once you had to go to gigs with flyers, paste posters all over town and then do it again the following week after they had been covered up or taken down... your local could be either a pub, function room or club, trust me its as hard to do a real northern night in bristol as anywhere, ive done gigs where the only requests i get are motown ,aretha and james brown by people who havnt got a clue about northern...by the time theyre pissed you can put the decent stuff on and theyre loving it....then again last friday we had a real northern night where there was only a couple of dozen die hard soulies and vinyl collecters turned up,all friends of the 3 djs....we lost money but had a wicked night still and we will be doing it again next month ive heard some djs who do tend to play the same tunes whatever the venue and carry on if the floor empties and even if those tunes had been played that night and yes we can all make mistakes but ive also heard people make too many mistakes ... but like i said thats just my opinion -

this is my opinion..... if you have no experience you cannot expect promoters to give you prime time slots, you have to settle for early doors or the grave yard shift..... if you want experience get down your local and sort your own slots out !...aswell as flyers/posters you now have the internet to advertise ..its never been easier.. as far as cueing etc..if you cant do that FFS GET BACK IN THE BEDROOM TILL YOU CAN ! cds are ok....but what happens if the floor empties or another dj plays your playlist first or when you get that annoying punter in your ear all nighht whos never happy whatever you play and is basically just trying to piss you off...cos they are out there ! ive been djing 20 years almost and its a full time job trying to get slots ,people arnt ringing me up every two minutes i get off my arse and get out there and after the last three years of intense playing/asking and buying ! its only this last year that im getting some reward...not financially, thats hardly changed in 20 years but thats not why we do it....i get such a buzz from soul/reggae i love passing that on....playing music loud, dancing, singing and makeing other do it is great...which is why so many do it.... there will always be more djs then slots....just like footy....big teams like liverpool, newcastle expect to win trophies but for them to do that better teams like utd, arsenal etc have to go without !....think im going off thread now -
cant remember title at moment but theres a gold one on the front of manships book..3000 i think ! couple of common 80s reissues....wigan joker on yellow, somewhere on a back shelf gathering dust.....if thats what you wanted on clear inferno.....but then in the 80s it was rarer to find tunes on black vinyl !....its a bit like that again with all the new guitar bands....hard fi 's last tune had "on rare black vinyl" on the pic cover ... secret red always interested me,looks black till you hold it upto the light and its see through with a red tinge...bad manners always had that

1972 aged 5,i loved records even then and along with crazy horses by the osmands i would play my dads copies of roadrunner/shotgun,youre not an ordinary girl/beautys only skin deep, little queenie and back st/aint it a sad thing by r dean taylor on rare earth, can still remember kneeling on the floor playing them....over the next few years i would hear james brown and sam and dave befor my older bruv discovered northern and did the alnighters at peterburough,st ives, yate ...can remember his bag in the hall on a sunday, and the floor creaking with him practising his moves upstairs !....this was mid 70s,started playing his tunes about 78 and bought "hey little way out girl"...my best mate had an ep with "youre ready now" on with the rupert the bear theme on the b side !....then two tone started and i was hooked on that until about 83 when i got a scooter and started doin the rallies...then i would ride round with a casette playing my bruvs records at full volume....now ive got the bigger collection but hes still got some gems in the loft id like to get my hands on !!

i think the japanese just love western music (no not rawhide before someone says it !)....years ago as a teen collecting punk and two tone there were often jap imports all over the place, the jam were massive over there.... back in the 90s i knew a reggae dealer buying up sound system collections in ja and making a mint selling them to the japenese ... not sure how it started or what genre was first but i suppose they dont have the prejudices some of our kids have...they just love good music

-
surely its horses for corses....i cant afford most of the top 500 on original so if im playing at a scooter rally or with no other djs in a local pub do where i know thats what they wanna hear and they dont give a shit about the format then the reissues and boots get played...if im playing at a "proper" soul nite with other djs i have more self respect AND respect for the other djs with the big tunes and play £50 and under originals (with a handful of big money tunes)...aslong as they are still good dancers !!...dont play an original just because it is one....at the end of the day every dj should have an hours worth of good originals at least
