Alternative Versions Of Soul & Northern Records
Spacehopper replied to a topic in All About the SOUL
love playing alternate versions when theyre good enuff..anyone mention better use your head/robin wilson....she blew a good thing/donald height....ill bet you /theresa lyndsey...green onions/righteous bros band..all good tunes although not very obscure or odd ! could choose hundreds of reggae and rocksteady, especially studio one as the producer coxsone dodd would visit the us and take a big pile of sevens back to jamaica to cover in a reggae stylee !...fave for me is night owl/harace andy ...off top of me 'ead also.. raise your hands/prince buster...all the love ive got/john holt also got a "dodgy" cover of....wait for it....everybodies fave "the snake" ! on a 10" which actually isnt dodgy at all -
ive always loved music and records..along with osmonds ,slade etc i can remember playin my dads copies of little queenie, shotgun and youre not an ordinary girl back in 73 aged 6 !...then i got into elvis along with my mates ,much to my dad and older brothers horror !...a few years later my brother got into northern and was going to st ives, peterborough and yate(was livin in norwich)...in 78 now 11 was bored with rock n roll and the abuse from my brother and bought "hey little way out girl" on a grapevine pic sleeve can also remember youth club tunes such as youre ready now, interplay etc but in 79 two tone happened and i was a rude boy...not a mod !! so until i got into scooters in 83 i forgot about northern....for the next 6 years i was doin the rallies lovin soul but listening to more and more reggae ,more hash less speed !,in 89 i left the scooter scene to be a reggae dj and although i still play some reggae gigs for the last 5 years (since getting a scoot again)ive got right back into the soul scene hook line and sinker ,over the last couple of years doing more soul nights than rallies...to be continued !!

was just replying that there are times when someone may buy a tune cos they know it will be asked for whether they like it or not...maybe even some on this scene ? if i had a tune i didnt like on the flip of something id played and i got requested to play it then i would do my best to work it into my set as i am there entertain and want people to dance and comeback again..part of the fun of playing to me is going from one style to another in the space of a few tunes ..without emptying the floor hopefully... was asked to play at a soul night last week and told they like uptempo so didnt take much slower stuff and played what i did have earlier on...on my third and last spin on the dex after 4 stompers the floor started to thin a bit and i could see some of the "more mature" dancers on the sides puffin and panting so went from uptempo northern to uptempo rnb to slower rnb and got them all back...great fun im not doing it for my ego....i dont wanna be the best just want people to get the same buzz out on the floor that i do when im behind the dex listening to REAL music whether it be soul or reggae

DOH !! just did ....in my defence was at work doing 3 things at once which we men struggle with unless its dancin, cueing up a tune while politely teliing an annoying drunk we havent got his tune !
-
im confused ...."would you play a record you hate if requested "....if you hate it why have you bought it in the first place?...unless you liked it once i suppose but if you are passed being bored with it and actually HATE it why have you not sold it...and then it doesnt matter if you get requested for it.... not on the soul scene but i know of commercial djs, weddings etc who HAVE to buy (or download now) tunes they dont like...
-
hate is a strong word and i dont hate any records in my collection...cant afford to buy tunes i dont like too many out there i love !!some im bored with but will take out if i know im gonna get requested for it....as long as youre polite i dont think punters can demand you play a tune if it doesnt fit in...and how can they argue with "sorry mate havnt got it with me" after all most of us only have a couple hundred tunes with us out of thousands of possible requests
-
wasnt there but understand from a mate it filled the floor at a night in northampton too... as for ebay buyers being thick often see new bootlegs going for more than dealers are selling them....also samantha jones pic sleeve was 20 odd last week when jm has it for about 15 i think...

shit !...one of my fave mid 70s producers...also taught the wailers all about harmonies when they were at studio one where he also recorded some good vocal tracks...change of plan great track !

Northern Soul And The 7" Single
Spacehopper replied to ZapatootheTiger's topic in All About the SOUL
for the last 5 years ive been playing more soul nites but before that i was strictly a reggae dj and trust me the obsession with vinyl in the reggae scene whether it be revival, dub or ragga is just as mad as the northern scene....there will be some who change of course.. went to a dub clash couple of years back in bristol....iration steppas v abba shanti, ive seen these two clash before and always a good night...years ago iration would always use dat tapes while abbashanti would have vinyl and old style dubplate(acetate)...this time while abbashanti still did it one deck and vinyl style iration were using discs...recorded off vinyl ! you could still here the slight crackles etc, even a f***** rewind which the should only be called for by the crowd !...abbashanti wiped the floor with them....vinyl just shows you are makin more of an effort and doin something special which the dancefloor appreciates...in my opinion -
i think its an ok track..no its not northern although the influence can be heard...although it wont get played at many soul nights im sure ,along with the vid it will no doubt bring some new blood into the scene the same way two tone, mod revival and dare i say it footsie did !!...surly that can only be a good thing....at least when "normal" youngsters stray into a soul night they might not look at the dancers like they were from outer space !!

there are so many soul sites with soundfiles to listen to whether its dealers or fans they are very useful to know what you are spending your hard earned on....ive got a dealer with awesome original ska/reggae vinyl but as its lists in the post i dont know half of them and cant afford to buy blind !...as with soul a normally good artist/label or producer dont mean its gonna be a good track ...anyone know of any sites i can listen to mainly skinhead reaggae and ska/rocksteady without having to download ?...sites like manships (i know he has reggae too) or hitsville... ta

personally i like stuff from the 60s although there are a few from the 70s that give me the same buzz ,benny troy, flame n king etc but there seems to be some confusion are we talking newies as in new discoveries and oldies as in often played classics ? ...if so then i think it depends on if youve been into the scene for twenty years or more without a break...if so you are going to be bored with hearing frank wilson etc remember back in the 70s it was all about new discoveries of rare soul music...if you are coming back to the scene nostalgia will make you love these tunes and if you are new to it youre gonna love them cos they are wicked records.... as i said there are a few 70s tracks i like but on the whole i prefer it when anything newer is in a seperate room ,modern soul has a different production and overall vibe...and im afraid if played alongside 60s it will make me have a sit down
