  1. ditto that ...often play this but am guilty of not playing many more instrumentals even though i love them....maybe most fall into the overplayed top 500 slot ! .....no one mentioned 'last night'...or is it a nostalgic scooterist thing that makes me still like the bottom theme and dont think its BOLLOX ! ... love soul finger ,righteous bros band version of green onions with that BIG BRASS sound.....classical gas/mason williams(probabaly cos my dad had spanish relatives and i played his flamenco records as a kid !) but some instrumentals are just backing tracks in reality...there is a difference
  2. following on from seperate posts on here about dodgy e bay dealers and us being more positive i would just like to share this with you.... sunday i bought" have a little mercy/with my love and what you got" jean wells from 'toppspott' not an expensive tune, books at 40 cost me 20 inc p&p from the states and was in near mint condition ... payed with paypal .....got a message from the dealer record was being posted that day....next day i noticed in my ebay "pay now"....uh ?....checkout paypal and had been refunded.....found a message from the dealer, turns out he was in a hurry when putting on the ad and graded it by looks but when it came to packing noticed a slight warp, played it and found it had smalll ammount of noise...as it was his error he sent it anyway foc !.. havnt received it yet so dont know how bad the warp/noise is but still good of him dont ya think ? how many sellers ,espescially so far away would have done that more like send it and see if you bothered to return it and ask for a refund.... so nice one 'toppspott' from indianapolis
  3. yep ! ..most dealers seem to be selling for 55+...still massive down here in bristol big floorfiller and great ..singa long tune...got it to replace boring looking route reissue which i sold to a mate (very pleased,no acsess to internet/dealers and lost his old route copy many years back !)for a fiver so you could say it was 35
  4. to replace boots and f***** copies...originals of get out/harold melvin,shoes/bobby bland,if i could only be sure/nolan porter, touch of venus(demo)sandy wynns... too late/mandrill..arista dead end st(with momologue)/lou rawls capitol ray of sunshine/sam jones ua demo skate/dean parish boom la la la la la /blendells reprise stop and listen/patti drew capitol demo you got it baby/volumes inferno if he makes you/nolan chance constellation if i hurt youll feel the pain/barbara and brenda dynamo im gonna hold on/marlina mars mgm demo gimme back my love/paulette parker duke lookie lookie/the jewels king shock horror 2 levine productions i think.... venicia wilson/this time im loving you ,top top interpretations/coming out of hiding, love and today... mama got a bag of her own/anna king end without you baby/irma and the larks priority i may have bought some of these at the end of last month but certainly all in the last 6 weeks...the cheapest was a fiver and the dearest £40
  5. a top 500 that isnt in the top 500...could it be done on here ?...anyone got the pc know how to start a thread where tunes are added until we have a soul source 500...maybe only 1 tune each or maybe a voting system once we have 500 ??...just a thought..
  6. cant remember the author but im pretty sure one of the top paperbacks the other year was "is it me or is everything today just shit " or something like that.....then theres the kaiser chiefs single from there last album "everything is average nowadays" ...its not just us !!!! So what are you saying? Nothing to worry about? We shouldn't be pessimistic because the northern scene is OK? no....in that post i was just saying its not just us !....a lot of people think a lot of things today are shit and average not just the northern scene.... but to be honest i dont think we should "worry" the northern scene will always be around it may not be perfect but nothing is and if the local nights have shit djs playing the same tunes to kids wearing i luv duffy t shirts jump in your car and go to one of the forward thinking nights which then wouldnt have to close lets face it with the internet its never been easier to find them......although its also never been so bloody expensive to get to them !!
  7. cant remember the author but im pretty sure one of the top paperbacks the other year was "is it me or is everything today just shit " or something like that.....then theres the kaiser chiefs single from there last album "everything is average nowadays" ...its not just us !!!!
  8. some good points...especially mischief, russ and des..... heres my two pennies worth... ive never been to a night that was ruined by youngsters....in fact i cant remember the last time i went to a shit night !....maybe it cos im down here in the sw...??? yes there are youngsters at some the soul nights in bristol who havnt got a clue what its about...most stand around watching the dancefloor occasionally having a go on the floor and normally giving up...some of these "duffies" may come back and get bitten by the bug and become the next generation of soulies most will move on and get into the next best thing...they wont change a thing in the long run... its funny back in 1990 when i left the scooter scene and started djing reggae i went through much the same thing...i was playing this new style of reggae called dancehall/ragga and living in norwich where the only thing people wanted to hear was bob marley and ub40 !...a few years back shabba, sean paul were in the charrts and ragga was popular...it got watered down for the charts ...now you never hear it.....but down here in bristol its still poular in the undergrond clubs.... there are new discoveries out there....des ,you played one at cheltenham covered it up tongue in cheek as judy street...had a peek at the decks and ive not seen it anywhere inc manships guide...wicked tune....but....if people wanna dance to some of their faves you have to live and let live, there must be room for a mix...its a shame if venues that are "forward thinking" close....we dissapoint some of my small crowd at go go children in bristol cos i wont play my mel britt bootleg or an overplayed snake and maybe thay will not come back...i hope not,we still have a great night and were getting them into under £50ers theyve never heard BUT we still play some from the top 500 they can sing along to aswell !!.... i think its history repeating as someone has already said ,its just weve got an internet to moan about it this time.....which could make it worse im sure back in the mid/late 70s there were ex twited wheel/torch goers at wigan complaining about all the youngsters and some of the music played there....lets face it even if you dont like them you gota admit duffy and ami has more soulful than wigans ovation ,gary lewis and hawaii 5-0 !! last note....as mischief said ,lets try be more positive...we love this scene/music or we woudnt be on here every day !!
  9. The time Weller covered it, it was already over played at scooter do's.. i stand corrected !...nuffin wrong wi that.....i left the scooter scene about 1990 to start djing reggae and only got back into it (although nowhere near as deep) when i got a gp again about 5 years back so missed this period...
  10. reading the dancefloor and cueing up should be an obvious requirement.....maybe go back to medieval times and hand out rotting fruit to punters .....or like at the apollo ...crap dj...crowd boo....big bouncers removes said dj
  11. its true...a handful of scooterists complain on forums about the music all being the same old stuff....but last year at margate one of the djs played a wicked indie track "alarm clock" cant remember who by (even though i got it !) and it cleared the floor....played a punk/new wave standard from 1980 and a full floor again.....you gotta remember "most" scooterists are music fans second....their scoot and getting legless with mates is the most important thing.....and nuffin wrong wi that ive had scoots off and on since 84 and although i dont do many rallies anymore will never get rid of mine and most of my mates have them.....but im a music fan first.....exmouth rally or kings hall allnighter....no competion...see you in stoke !!
  12. i mentioned that cos i bought one recently supposed to be genuine and turned out to be suspect at best....the seller took it back so wasnt a prob.....just reading the manship bootleg guide its amazing how close some of them were....the malibus gee baby i love you for instance the only way to tell is the "i love you" is in small case instead of capitols...easy if you know !....some of the labels such as dion are also almost impossible as originals didnt always have stamped numbers, had different shades of orange etc....at the end of the day most of them were counterfeit and made to deceive whereas most of todays boots are double siders sometimes of different labels so are obviously not genuine
  13. loads of youngsters who arent mods like quadrophenia so if done right could be good for the scene...i think it should be done, just like the mods and rockers of the 60s the northern scene of the 70s was a big part of british teenage history....if you grew up in the 70s you knew of northern soul wherever you lived and if you were into it or not....always thought the book "cracking up" would make a good film... lets just hope they get the soundtrack right.....but whatever they do people will still find fault....just like all the gp's and px's in quodrophenia !!
  14. sorry cant remember his name...was a dodgy phone line...
  15. i might be actually !....apparently one of the djs has a broken leg and might not make it and im sub...waitin for brendon to ring sometime next week to confirm or not...
  16. what about...etta james/7 day fool or charles sheffield/mojo working....dont send nobody else/ace spectrum, wanna give you tomorrow/benny troy,....or even....dare i say it....sydney barnes/standing on solid ground !!...it may have been produced by mr levine somepeoples anti christ but its argueablly one of the biggest floorfillers of the decade...is it not ?
  17. by the way i know the snake is not an expensive tune....just used it as an example of how they didnt give a shit about soul politics....big tunes i get asked for at local scooter dos are rita and the tiaras, mel britt etc....could play them killer semi known originals by malina mars, ruby and the romantics, barbara and brenda ,esquires etc but they wouldnt like it all night...
  18. its not a lack of respect i try to do both unknown and classics, depends on the gig....at a rally such as hemsby that has a dedicated soul room i will be playing all originals and tryin to play something new.....but at club dos for exit 17 and radstock devils i get asked for the big tunes i can only afford on a boot....if i tell them ive left it at home cos its not original it wouldnt go down well and they wouldnt have such a good night or ask me back....not everyone is a collector who wants to hear a set of new stuff they wouldnt give a shit if i had a 3 cd box set from tesco !...last time i played radstock i got asked for the snake....twice !...and by twice i mean id already played it once and the dancefloor was still full...
  19. keep with it paul..while ive got nothing against 65 year olds djing(im in bristol, home of the famous reggae dj derek, god knows how old he is now and still doin womad etc) i would love to see a youngster behind the decks......maybe this new soul film about wigan will help....
  20. yes its easier and cheaper to collect tunes from home on your laptop but at the end of the day is it so much fun ?....tunes are cheaper (unless you get in a bidding war with someone) on ebay but at the expense of secondhand record shops which i loved looking through on a saturday.... nowadays everything it seems has to be easy....boring !.....if we all went for easy who would ride a lammy wed all have a twist and go...boring !
  21. this is the best reason for a bootleg ban.....those who cannot afford the originals would have to play wicked tunes that they wouldnt normally which for the normal punter (not obsessed vinyl collector) would mean hearing new discoveries every gig....which would also mean that you wouldnt here the big tunes everywhere you go and wouldnt get so bored with them.... @ go go children in bristol we have a bootleg ban and not a night goes by without someone coming up and asking about a cheapie theyve never heard before but go away searchin for....it also means when i do a scooter club do i can get a buzz from playing the boots of the tunes i cant afford and havnt played for a while as for cds.....not for me but if a promoter wants to and can take the flack from the other promoters/djs im sure most of the dancers wont give a shit
  22. aswell as serving a purpose could it be that bootlegs were not frowned upon so much because we were all so much younger and less cynical/judgemental ? i mean look at some of the tunes that were played back then !...joe 90,footsie etc can just imagine the dancefloor at a nighter today if these tunes were played.... as for recognising bootlegs i think its easier to tell nowadays pressings as theyve obviously used pc scanners for the labels....some of the 70s boots...ive got something good for instance ...are very hard to tell !!!
  23. lots of good points....down here in bristol we only have a couple of regular "northern" nights so not really a problem but then the scene is still very small down here we wouldnt want anymore... just up the road in glos/chelt/worcs there seems to be loads although all ive attended have been good...only half a dozen of us regularly travel from bristol which is more than come the other way so our nights still only have an average of 50 but we still have some great nights...size isnt everything !! as for not being as good as the 70s im afraid they never will...for you...that was your time when you were young...mine was the mid eighties scooter rallies and scooter rallies today dont come anywhere near...for me....however well some are attended, not just cos on the whole they are smaller i suppose i may fall into a z list soul dj as ive only had the chance to play a handful of gigs outside of bristol (although i do get asked back )but to me dancefloor action is more important than anything...if you can do it playing semi known tunes instead of the obvious all the better...but thats just my opinion...everyone is entitled to theres...if there are too many djs and some of them are shit ,dont attend their gigs with this so called credit crunch its only a matter of time before we are only left with the good nights...innit ?
  24. mirwood ,modern , scepter ,chess/chekker ,duke ,original kent ...off top of mi ed
