  2. when i left school i was lucky to get on a yop !...those a bit older had apprenticeships which led to skills and are now earning decent wages add to that they probably bought there house years ago when you didnt need to borrow 6 times your wage to get on the ladder ...and have paid up the mortgages...kids have grown up and so have money to spend which is the same reason scooters are now going for silly money compared to anytime before.... but as others have said you dont have to spend big bucks to get great tunes lots of originals for under £50....and then there are times when ladyluck shines on you and you get tunes from people who dont know what they have ....get the manship guides priceless !!
  3. not just the cost how many miles have some travelled ?!!...ive bought US issues from australia ,japan and all over europe !
  4. kinda.... when i first moved to bristol moved around a bit ...one time going from one flat in a dodgy area to another took a car load of stuff which me and a mate unloaded went back to get the next lot and found id left the door wide open with a crate of about 150 reggae 12"s on the door mat ...doh! ...think it might have been the herbal medication i was on at the time bought a couple of vinyl disasters !

  12. can remember crashing a party in my "bad" mod days in the 80s and coming away with some records...no soul ...things like aswad ,police and teardrop explodes...didnt take any records there though!! think ive already posted this before on another thread but was in oxfam looking through hundreds of top of the pops and max bygraves lps when i cam across a mint copy of prince busters wreck a pum pum for a quid !! pulled out the record to see if was as good as the cover and found the best of nat king bloody cole !...frantic search for the nat lp cover came up with nothing.....can just picture some old biddy putting the prince buster lp on expecting to hear nat....bit of a shock especially if she could understand the lyrics !!
  13. not big money tunes but on two seperate occasions been looking through hundreds of naff "soul" records mainly disco and early eighties pop and found a mint copy of dont mess up a good thing/bobby mcclure and fontella bass on chekker with a wicked instrumental jerk loose /oliver sain on the flip for a quid.....and manhatton stomp/manhattons on carnival for 50p...not bad for the price of a can of coke ! had a reggae album on tape from a mate when i lived in norwich "the best of bamboo" one of my biggest wants ,never saw it but knew it was gonna be expensive when i did.....about 13 years later while living in bristol the auntie of my then girlfriend said she had some reggae records i could 'borrow' ...im hoping for a crate full but theres only half a dozen none much good except ...you guessed it ...the best of bamboo ..a studio one masterpiece...still got it,not the best condition but it will do me....still in contact with the ex so she cant want it back
  14. jimi hendrix did play guitar for the isley brothers on move over and let me dance/atlantic...apparently

  17. to many to mention when talkin about memories....i suppose as a feel good factor i love... ray of sunshine, something to sing about and dont cry sing a long with the music...all a bit cheesy but nice melodies and positive lyrics
  18. i think youre spot on..a lot of the classics from early wigan, torch etc were great tunes most of which you only had to hear the first few bars and you instantly liked....so if youre new to the scene just like generations before these are the tunes youre gonna want to hear....maybe some of the tunes being played now are not 'new' discoveries at all but were overlooked by djs back then cos they were 'growers' ... to them ....remember back then the djs who went looking in the states had warehouses full of quality vinyl to look through....not like today where you may have to look through piles of shit, a lot of which isnt really soul or even good dancers at all ,just to find a couple of gems...whether it be in one of the few shops left or e-bay i suppose its much the same in reggae....tunes like double barrell ,54-46 or bob marleys could you be loved are all wicked tunes which is why they were so big...every new generation is gonna love them but most serious reggae djs/collecters are bored with playing them and are also a bit 'snobbish' towards people who request them whats the saying...familiarity breeds contempt ? or something like that
  19. i can think of 2 others scenes where age isnt an issue....reggae and techno...ive been to nites of both and seen the same age difference as in soul and they both have more yougsters getting into them than soul has at present
  20. f*** me its like ground hog day on here lately !!
  21. what the f*** is going on people ?....ive been into a few 'musical' scenes ,been upto my neck in reggae (ragga, revival and dub) northern and dabbled in techno and drum and bass for a couple of years in the 90s and when youre out at a night i have always found the northern scene the most polite ,friendly and respectful of them all....no prejudice, attitudes or trouble....and yet if you come on here it seems to be the complete opposite sometimes....and we want new people ? lets hope they dont visit this site first ! soul source should be to meet like minded people ,make new friends promote your gig AND find out about others....please cant you bickering promoters do it in private cos this is doing no good for any of you !
  22. im sure many singers did sing over already popular instrumentals...good business move !....its just some instrumental tracks i hear ,mainly on compilation albums ...cant think of one of top of me head will have a look when i get home ,just sound a bit ...well boring, aswell as no vocal they also have no lead instrument or a big brass section blasting out a melody ..its just a rhythm basically....if you know what i mean ?....didnt have any of the BIG instrumentals already mentioned in mind and i agree some of the instrumentals are more powerful than the vocals!
  23. we have to work our nuts off down here in bristol to get people out to soul nites,as soon as one nite is done were plugging the next...but we dont get none of this between promoters/djs....at times i wish i was living somewhere with a bigger soul crowd but then again if this sort of thing goes on maybe not.....i'll stick to the mild mild west...as banksy put it !
  24. i suspect lots of reasons depending on the night and promoter.....the two runnin in bristol are being run strictly for the love of playing your tunes to like minded folk,we all know each and help each other out as we live in a bit of a soul desert...its certainly not for the little cash we make cos that doesnt even come close to the vinyl we buy....personally i buy lots more when im playing out regular.... recently getting together had a boat trip which they knew before they would actually lose money on but we all had a great night and they made up the loss at the next night i suspect but probably not any profit go go children is in a tucked out of the way club so we do not attract twats but only those who want to come for the soul even if it does mean only just breaking even most of the djs involved in these two nights also get work elsewhere so its not the only time we get to play BUT there are big nites where although they may love the music im sure people are doing it for the large amounts of cash they must make...and why not !....if you can make a living doing something you love fair play...as long as there are no dirty dealings going on towards other nights
