im not worried or upset !....but if they didnt care about it being a bootleg and just wanted the tune why not go to a dealer who would have sold them it for a fiver in the case of ill forgive and forget or a tenner for a brand new boot of send him back with another classic on the other side ....could have bought half a dozen more too....if they collect boots thats upto them but i still find it a little odd to pay SO much over the top, lets hope they never have/want to sell them cos theyre gonna lose a lot of money ...unless they find someone else with more money than sense/knowledge...

and at scooter rallies...over 2 nights at 2 gigs i heard it 6 times last weekend !!!!!
-
otis, jackie and marvin...no need for surnames when talkin about true legends... but what about the ladies !!....aretha and my personal fave voice would probaby be bettye swann
-
such a shame so many negative comments already...hardly gonna make him attend one of those half empty gigs we all moan about !.....yes it could be called hip pop or whatever but at least hes dancin and not out on the streets up to no good...and what if his love for dancin came before his knowledge of soul we all came into this different ways and if the bug bites thats all that matters... as for this style of dancin...it was a big thing back in the glory days,it did make northern dancin different(better) than most and i wish i could do it !...as long as it goes with the music....nothin better than watching some one flip about in the musical breaks and then back to he 'dancin' in perfect time ....and personally (as at stoke on a few occasions) even better when its a young lad who wasnt even around in the wigan days !!...BUT ..nothin worse than someone just randomly kickin and jumpin about all through a tune (as in last years dance off at blackpool !) good on him.....lets spread the faith...not keep it !!!

my point wasnt really about knowing the going rate of originals or whether john was overpriced but paying big amounts for a bootleg when a £11 book can save you lots of cash and teach you what to look for....the going rate of send him back on original (on ebay at least) is up in the 80s but £50 for a boot !...

where have you been mate ? its set in 74 .... i think our opinions are valued by the film makers but we soul sourcers will only be a very small section of the audiance.....and this may be the most knowledgable forum on the scene BUT we are also only a small part of the scene...i think we sometimes forget that ! its a shame we get so cynical with age...yes we are passionate and want our scene to be represented right to those who dont know it and the music IS AND ALWAYS SHOULD BE the most important thing but the filmmakers have said they will try to use as much real music as they can....lets give em a chance as for the love story im no expert BUT IN MY OPINION most storys fall into one of maybe half a dozen "types"....just different periods in time, settings etc for example the gladiator is basically the same plot as the patriot....good peoples hero taking on bad boy leader and winning in the end....quodrophenia is the same as babylon...leading actors looses everything and is dissalusioned with what he thought was important...im sure there are more examples but im not really a film buff and ive gotta go do some work !!

cant believe some of the tunes being posted !.... ....maybe if it was whats YOUR worst tune on the scene at the moment .....i suppose its always gonna come down to personal taste but how can you post tunes such as shoes when hawaii five 0,papa ooh mowmow and all that bollox has been played 'back in the day'.... i suppose it makes it a longer more interesting and humourous thread...
-
dont get me wrong i dont work for manship but i cant believe some of the prices on ebay recently for boots ! havnt theses people got the price guides especially the bootleg guide..... last week i was watching send him back and ill forgive and forget, neither were advertised as original so i checked the guide and asked the seller about numbers in run out grooves ....both boots worth what £5-7..?...didnt see the finished prices but send him back was on £49 and ill forgive and forget was on 80 odd !! i would have thought if you are paying this much for tunes you must have heard of johns site and therefore the guides....obviously not !

Too Many Events; A New Slant On An Old Topic
Spacehopper replied to Sharon Cooper's topic in All About the SOUL
as ive said before on threads about this subject im glad i live in bristol !!....although northern isnt "big" here we only have 2 monthly soul nights who do their best NOT to clash AND promote each others gigs....and they ARE different...getting together has been going for years on a saturday and plays northern and modern so when we started go go children ,back in january,as well as going for friday, even though we know its not such a good night ,we dont play any modern or even 70s...strictly 60s AND we play a little british beat and even a couple of ska and rocksteady...we dont play ANY boots...and it seems to work,we are gradually building up support without doing any damage to getting together who we are FRIENDS with !!.....people it can be done ! for those of you who are in areas with too many nights and half full halls why not try a 'soundclash' of some sort,if you dare!....as with reggae sound systems, two promoters in the same venue on the same night, maybe in the same hall or maybe two seperate rooms and let the dancers decide...the room or djs that no one dancers to has to give up their night ....just an idea... -
i agree with JHs simple and correct answer to the original question....my thread which he quoted was highlighting that confusion he talks of (northern/british-southern/american)...its not that i didnt know the history of the terms or know the differences in the styles of music....whether it be doo wap, rnb,up tempo/mid tempo, blue eyed, group harmony(girl)funk,70s,deep modern or what ever !!...especially as i have played both drums and bass in the past..... all very compicated....especially when discussed on a pc instead of at a do !.....and is also the reason why our night in bristol advertises 60s soul on the flyer and has no mention of northern....but jocko i dont need to read a book and go learn something about soul....ive been around it all my life since hearing both my older brother and parents playing it thank you... but then i was expecting that kind of reply from someone
-
here we go again ..another thread slips into bickering .... i realise people are passionate and want to see the film as acurate as it can be BUT it is just a film, not even based on any one true event just a period in time and a culture.... if you are old enough to have gone to the casino..lucky you but personaly i dont think any of your opinions count any more than any other soul fan who lives and breathes this music every day....unless ofcourse you are on the production team... i hope we would all like this film to be a big sucsess, maybe it will bring some new fans to the scene, fill up some of them half empty do's we all talk about because theres too many promoters/djs !!...maybe some skint artists careers may even be resurected through it BUT for this to happen the cinemas need to be full and that means people who werent at the casino aswell as those that were... im glad someone has the balls to take this on instead of the same old teen comedy.....at least it gives us something different to talk about instead of too many djs or bootlegs....again
-
ummm ...a bit worrying...what does contributing to the soundtrack mean ????......maybe making the music "that tells the story" such as the whos music in quod....surely not for the casino scenes.....can you imagine sting dancing to secret affair or the jam at brighton in 64 ! .....thats if he could dance ofcourse !!

if northern soul is so called because it was the "60s" soul played in northern clubs surely southern soul should be the "new"early 70s type played in the south of ENGLAND at that time....regardless of where in the states it was made....although i reallise there is a difference between the majority of stax tunes and motown..but then half the musicians in the stax studio were white as were the owners not so in detroit...maybe that was the politics of the usa at that time.....in the mid 80s when i first started going out to northern do's i always though southern soul was the type played in most clubs around the south of england then ,luther and alexandra o'neal etc....now called modern ???..... lets face it there are plenty stompin tunes made in the south of america aswell as slower ones made in detroit,so its not just about tempo.....and now some 35 years after the term northern was first used it TOO complicated to put it all in little boxes my personal opinion is northern is a certain feel, whether it be 60s , 70s or even 00s such as nicole willis or sydney barnes and whether it be fast or slow such as cause youre mine or the drifter !!..... just my opinion and a thought...or two
-
so glad you are gonna use original music lets face it the music was/is the most important thing and the reason people did/do travel from one end of the country to another ! as far as the fine detail about clothes etc,i was a courier for the bbc once and you will be amazed how much retro stuff film companies have stashed away...and lets face it even the great quodrophenia had many little mistakes, which after youve seen it a million times can be more interesting than the film....gp's,px's neither of which were around in 64 and the who double album next to the record player at the house party !! bad one that
-
agree with pete the spellbound cover is the worst contempo 7 ive bought...although theres probably a couple of equally as bad tunes on the DDD album i cant remember been a while since ive played it
-
and the album dance dance dance has a wicked sleeve of soul patches.....although everytime i look at it i wonder why theres no east anglian soul club on there
-
some good tunes .....incredibles has a good flip too, another dirty deal...but what about bettye swann make me yours !!!
-
maybe not with soul but early ska and rocksteady is still very big with the kids....a seller in bristol sells out of his reissues almost as soon as they are in...
-
dont mind what accent as long as theyre ENTHUSIASTIC ! some are too monotinous (spelling ?)...i suppose a northern accent does sound better but not so strong so the only word us southerners can understand is wigan !
-
sometimes you just have to trust people....most people on here know someone who know someone and if theyve got loads of posts and have been a member for a while theyve gotta be safe....if you do anything wrong on here you are normally named and shamed pretty quick !!
-
great tune...cant be her real name....i think she would have chosen a different one today, joy lovejoy sounds like a porn star !!
-
in my opinion i think it can only be good for the scene as they say ..theres no such thing as bad publicity....unless you are one of those who would rather the scene got smaller which also has some good points to it and a valid oppinion you are entitled too the mods and rockers on a bank holiday(quodrophenia) was part of our history which has led to the scooter raliies of today and spread around the world...the manchester sound (24 hour party people)was also part of our history so why not a film about the 70s northern scene which has also spread around the world .... as far as the dancers ,yes they are gonna struggle getting 1000 dancers under 25 ...there must have been a dozen or more yougsters doing some good moves at kings hall last week they can be used for close ups....do the wide screen shots need to be youngsters?...if so im sure there are loads of dance schools about with students who can learn the moves good enuff to be an extra in a crowd scene
-
yes mate....my post should have read with or without
-
once again a thought provoking question barry ! my opinion...if i understand you right ! i think the 60s scene without modern would have gone through a natural low(when the original dancers got married etc) but just like the scooter scene would have had a revival....any dancefloor at any oldies night will show you for every "new discovery addict" like it or not there are two classic addicts !! i reckon this scene has always had progressive djs which is why its so diverse whether it be at the mecca, stafford or middleton or the first djs to start playing modern or rnb as for the modern scene alone...i dont know enough to comment ....but i dont think they were made for each other i think there are as many northern lovers whos second genre would be reggae before modern.....or maybe thats just my mates
-
cant remember much about my first time....djing that is !..probably more sucsessful than the other tho ! was at a scooter do in norwich sometime in the late 80s was just helping out the dj with a little box of reggae a year or so later got paired up with a friend of a friend who was biulding a reggae sound system and needed someone with a good reggae collection..first couple of times was just passing him the tunes after that i took over and he hardly got a go on the dex again !! cant really remember being nervous back then...sometimes a bit paro but that was probably the copius ammounts of hash we were smoking in the van before hand !! never use to use the mike back then as with reggae normally some mc types wanting to "chat"..i was a "selecter"...first time on the mic at a northern do was a bit nervous...and more recently supporting "from the jam" at bristol academy was a bit nervous...big stage with decks right in the middle at the front !!...after a few tunes was well away even with 1000 faces looking at me still jigged about a bit and was gutted id forgot to ask for a mic !...sometimes now i think when djing maybe i talk too much, which is odd cos in a crowded room i hardly say a word
