  1. not sure if youre still one of the younger lot but i do know being into soul after growing up with soft rock you derserve a medal !!
  2. great story pete..the bit that made me smile is going to a 'black' reggae shop and everyone looking !...been there done that soooooo many times....mainly in london dub vendor record shack was the size of a garden shed... still surprises me when i play reggae in a 'black' pub in bristol the shocked faces when a white man pulls out a top tune ! but as someone said the passion for revival reggae is as big as soul...and every generation of youngsters love it (could be the weed !) so as they say 'respect is due '...
  3. lenny 'blackburn' gamble ....nah gotta be bobby paris, dean parrish or timi yuro as has been said...been floorfillers for years
  4. a great thread with lots of interesting posts....a real two sides to a story cos i keep changing my mind !!....at first i thought nah ! its the thrill of the chase, ive bought hundreds of tunes this year alone,im on a budget and only go upto £50(although some 'book' at 4 times that ?)...despite that my two fave finds this year were a fiver each ! but then i think of all those great tunes i can never afford and think ..nah it would be just as much of a thrill spending whatever it cost...putting up wants lists on forums and getting parcels everyday !!!...or as someone said spending months travelling around the states with a portable turntable.... so i dunno....
  5. the blue 'ink' label original has a raised b stamped in the run out
  6. very nice brenda holloway....lots of quality there but wasnt she the one who done a wicked cover of yvonne bakers 'didnt say a word' back in the 90s for you ian ,another tune that would be hard to cover and get right as the original is so well known and liked, but between you both you did..
  7. talking of mistakes,my mrs was watching merlin on the beeb at the weekend and apparently someone was eating a sandwich...in the dark ages !!! can just see all the history/magic forums this mornin, keyboards must be red hot with people complaining and vowing never to watch it again ....or not
  8. AAARRGH ! link not workin, too busy or summit keep gettin time out page and gotta sign off now...how frustrating, will check it out later thanx ian
  9. agree pete great tune.....love zoot moneys big time operator too
  10. hi ian, firstly can i repeat others respect for what youve done and continue to do....ive got maybe a dozen of your productions from the past few decades and love the vanessa haynes and sydney barnes of more recent times....youve done some great songs with great vocalists but (please dont take this the wrong way) as a lover of 60s music on the whole its the modern production that doesnt grab me...but then im not a lover of most 70s soul either...love the songs (melodies arrangements vocals etc) though..... im a big reggae collecter too and recently there has been a lot of stuff made using more vintage studio techniques, instruments etc....you couldnt tell if it was made in 74 or 2004....not that you should have to and part of me respects you for not doin it but would love to hear some of these done in an old time stylee !!....maybe some ltd edition remixes for us dinosaurs stuck in the past
  11. yes....takin the mrs to the cinema.....at last !...gotta be worth some brownie points also thinkin good job the 'discussions' at soul nights etc dont get so passionate as this site ...would be kickin off everyweek !
  12. mailed ya mark...
  13. dont worry very chilled here as im sure paul is...(unlike some threads!)....hard to get point across sometimes though on line
  14. hi nik, ive always laughed at the many mistakes in quad and agree never stopped me enjoyin it....in fact my mrs is a teacher and she finds lots of todays kids (whose parents have no contact with scootering) know and love it too !! lets hope souled out is half as sucsessful as quad...
  15. but the starter of this thread was talkin about the motown label which also didnt just release northern and after the 60s also released a massive ammount of shit...IMHO so i would include majors...abc...mgm also cameo parkway, verve but this thread is tjust urnin into a list of labels....the label with the most after motown had to be atlantic
  16. i dont think you have to hire a dj or even play for a promoter you dont like...lets face it theres no shortage of djs or events out there.... last year i started working with a dj in bris we did a few nites in different clubs and things were going well...after 6 weekly gigs in an 'uptown' club wed had some good publicity and things were going good...i turned up as normal....my mates tunes were there but no sign of him....manager called me in the office and i was told i wasnt wanted cos i played to much 'specialised soul' and my 'mate' was going alone playing more commercial stuff.....no discussion thats it....and this is despite me doin it alone the last time as my mate was on hols an it being the best yet...their words ! my mate could have told me,save me my taxi money.....wed talked about this a couple of weeks before when another promoter freind of mine was looking for a partner but i told my mate i would have turned him down as i was already doin this with him....a few extra quid turned his head and was worth more than our 'friendship'.... my mate never answered phone calls,texs....still dont speak to the bullshitter and wouldnt piss on him if he was on fire let alone book or dj for him !....as you can see im still a bit pissed off bout it! the night only lasted a few more weeks and ive gone on to much better things with MUCH more professional, honest people....
  17. NORMOWL !!....WOS NORMOWL DEN ??...... sorry ....a quote from the mod film i can never spell but cant help saying everytime i hear someone talkin about being normal !!
  18. also disapointed beeks....wouldnt have ripped you apart im genuinely interested in other playlists....especially those unknown djs (like myself) who i will probably not get to hear.... it could have got you some gig offers too !
  19. oh dear beeks...you certainly know how to put people off you ! ....come on show us your tunes !.....as has been said if a BIG dj plays a tune demand and price will go up ...but not if you put a wants list up !....wanna know what i play ? look in ANY past go go children lookback review Dont forget, part of this scene is a nostalgia scene. Some people dont want educating, they want a good night out listening to records they love. They want to get on that dancefloor and feel like they're 18 again. I'd still say this is the majority of northern soul fans judging the level of attendances at various venues right or wrong...spot on miss burysoul !!
  20. i still hope its released and will wait to see it before i slag it off....as far as sitting around all day goes my brothers girlfriend is an extra for the bbc and has done work on major films too and shes says theres lots of sitting around in every production so im not surprised youngsters are getting bored.....period mistakes ? its bound to have lots almost every film made..even big budget hollywooders..have.... and i dont think you can tell what a film is gonna look like until the editors (no not the band !)have done there magic...certainly not by watching them film it.... saying all this ofcourse the music and dancing shots used have got to be right....buut after all the previous threads on here they must know that already...
  21. That brings up another interesting point...DJ's that are much younger and have no history of attending the Wigans/etc...they have a completely fresh ear to all the sounds and therefore cannot be swayed by trends? Surely they will be more inclined to base their purchases solely on the quality of the record and not it's past plays. true but they dont HAVE to be youngsters either....my brother done the niters in the 70s i did the scooter rallies in the 80s BUT the other djs at go go in bristol have nothing to do with soul/scooter scenes although they have been djs and soul fans since the late 70s !....they know a lot of the big tunes but are collecters first and play what they think are quality tunes rather than what is played at other venues.....they dont wish to break into this scene......this gives our nite a freshness not many other nites have...and these are not my words but that of a travelling lifelong soulie.... we are also lucky to have a crowd half full with youngsters who have no real knowledge or experience of the scene so are not bias to top 500 anymore than unknown tracks they just wanna dance.....but i better shut up now cos im wandering off this thread now and will be accused of trying to plug our nite ...
  22. yes !....just as it should be....i have a dilemma this weekend two good nights in my area....one may have more people but the other has a dj i know will play a couple of great tunes that i have not heard ANYWHERE else and are not even in manships guide or website so i cant even hear little bit !!
  23. i keep getting confused as to which thread im reading !....top/flop dj underated dj ??.... basically top/flop is always only ever gonna be down to personal opinion....someone who fills the floor or someone who plays underplayed/new discoveries ?...cos im my experience as a punter (sorry)there is still a BIG majority of dancers who walk on and off the floor depending on if they know the tune or not ,not even giving an unknown a chance....and that is whoever is playing the tune....im not gonna name venues or djs but i have found myself one of only a handful of people on the floor at various soul nites only to suddenly have no room when a top 500 tune comes on...and none of us are gonna name anyone we think is a flop anymore than name bootleg venues in past threads are we...were all far too nice .... i think on the whole soulsourcers WHO POST are more in the new discovery group BUT although there are many members we are a very small part of the scene as a whole... most unknown djs only get the chance to play at local dos who have the same faces in the crowd...dont get me wrong these are great nites and personally i'll never turn down the chance of playing anywhere im asked ...but it would be nice to see some unknown names alongside the big djs on the flyers of the nites who are gaurenteed big crowds from ALL over the country...IMO the only way they could 'break into the scene'...
