its a shame out of all the members on here we cant get 100 people to suggest tunes ! ...but moan about a film or boots etc and you get pages and pages of replies !...COME ON PEOPLE WHATS YOUR CHOICE ??..or im gonna have a third !
-
the 100 club v kings hall thread on the events page got me thinkin...what size venue do you prefer ? if youre talkin about live concerts with me there is no competition...smaller or medium venue of under 1000 beat the big festivals everyday but what about soul nites/niters? im torn between the small (often underground) sweaty clubs full of atmosphere even with a smallish crowd (100 and under) and the big old halls with 1000 people...amazing vibe....

welcome to ss and good luck with your night BUT good luck on here too ....have you seen other threads about 'new nights' and a mixed genre one at that !!
-
sorry i dont mean to offend but this is bollox mate ! i will say this cos my partner in crime(it seems) john s is too nice ! we do not play a mix at go go just to get 'townies' in we play it cos it works !...we dont want or NEED to fill our room up with twats..a lot of soulies come from a mod background NO ONE HAS COMPLAINED....they know with at the most 20 mins the northern will be back on...townies as you put it do not come in cos weve chosen our venue wisely, students do,are well behaved some know northern some dont but go away learning about soul...something you once did !...f*** all wrong with that... we play plenty of underplayed soul ,we dont play other genres cos we aint got enuff tunes ! as i said in an earlier post i cant stand modern and to be honest other than its name i cant see OR HEAR any resemblance between it and 60s soul....completely different ...and when its played in the same room as 60s ,in the venues ive been to LOTS of people leave the floor while others join it....ian levines new productions a lot of you slag off have more in common with 60s...in fact ska and rocksteady can be mixed in with 60 soul better if you have the right tunes ...lots of jamaican music are covers of soul tunes...some very funky others very rnb....coxone, one of the biggest jamaican producers use to go to the states buy a big pile of 7s and take them back to ja to copy....and then youve got similiar studios and recording techniques.... remember the torch or twisted wheel may have been the first clubs to play soul all night but there were lots of little underground clubs mixing rare soul with ska etc through the 60s allnight long...it can work too...

i think the dancin with ya dad is a big factor in keeping youngsters away at big niters etc... as for playing ska etc while i dont wanna see it at niters or other established nites with big soul crowds there is room for nights that mix it up a bit....not every thing is black and white,if you dont go to a nite because it may play a bit of other 60s music while thats your choice you could also be missing out....i cant stand 99% of modern and most 70s but if i didnt go to nights that play a bit i would hardly go go anywhere !!... as some of you know at go go children in bris we do mix up the 60s genres to a crowd of soulies and youngsters some of who love the soul as much as the ska (as its about 80% soul ) and come up and ask the titles of classics and go away looking for them...isnt that a good thing?....and whats surprised me most is that travelling soulies who i thought maybe put off my the other genres have actually said they like it !...it makes it refreshing,different...or maybe it gives their aching limbs a chance to recover for 10 mins ! anyway this surely should be a different thread....as for the original internet thingy.... im afraid ive got splinters in my arse cos im stuck on the bloody fence !!....its good that we can chat to people we dont know and hopefully one day meet up with and become friends....its good that i can buy a tune off ebay direct from the states for a third of what a uk dealer would ask and i could never afford !! BUT....because people put their old discs on ebay instead of selling to secondhand record shops here in the uk those shops are shutting down and the joy of spending a mornin looking through tunes in dusty shops has gone.... as for advertising gigs,i think it helps but handing out flyers, putting up posters and texting friends is far more important in my experience.... so at the end of the day good or bad for the scene ? i aint got a clue and as it will never go away we will never know...

according to manships bootleg guide it is...a detroit issue
-
ok heres my number two... prove it everyday shirley wahls and spouse blue rock dean bristol as with the esquires i posted earlier ,might be a cheapie but what a dancer !
-
id rather see a dancefloor full of people gettin into it and doin what the f*** they wanted than sitting around strokin their chins moanin about it !....providing they werent po-going into others ofcourse !!
-
how many are on THIS site for a start...ok may not all be active but then again i probably know more people into northern who arent on here than are.... would be interesting if all those who posted a gig on here on one particular night counted as their people came in then posted the total on a monday ,we could see how many were out on any one night even though this obviously wouldnt be all the gigs it would stop us bickering over the same old subjects
-
would be intesting to know how many tunes dont sell on e bay cos bids arent anything to go by really as most dont bid till the last minute... there may have been more into it mid 70s but depends on what you mean by 'into' it....how many of those who bought grapevine etc after watching footsie on top of the pops were wearing bags until 77 then wore safety pins till 79 then wore loafers until 82 then wore f****** lipstick and danced to soft cell etc etc...
-
interesting but impossible i think....yes in the 70s grapevine may have sold 5000 copies of some tunes but how many records and discs are sold today do you think ?....every where from tesco to ebay, soul source and dealers such as manshhip, brady, chapman etc etc...and thats without those who download !! wigan may have had massive crowds very rarely seen now but as someone said shit loads more venues and gigs now its all more local....just like scooter rallies, back in the 80s there was probably an average of 5000 on almost every rally...even scottish rallies got a couple of thousand... today not even half that but there are rallies every week all through the year not just 9 nationals through the summer....
-
might not be rare but still a bargain !...great tune
-
esquires how could it be bunky dean bristol
-
i wasnt lucky enuff to go to wigan.......i dont have nuffin against the ODD wigan revival night but having it on the site when its shopping center is a bit much......the yate revival night last year was the best night in the south west for ages but was at berkley...it was the music that made it a revival night not the location.... as for russ, never met him, im sure hes a nice man and once upon a time a good dj....saw him recently and wasnt that impressed to be honest...think he played ghost in my house,do i love you...not what i go to an established soul night for...wanted the residents on !...he also seemed to mix the tunes over each other too much
-
not a record but this reminded me of my brother dropping his tenor sax down the esculator at kings cross tube after busking !! .... a bit of damage and had to keep playing till he could afford to get it fixed and ended up giving himself a hernia cos of the extra effort ! buying the soul galore instrumental version of ive got something good has been my worst record disaster other than two broken tunes in two weeks thru the post ive been lucky....doin a reggae 'blues' (illegal allnight pay party) in stoke once with two youngs lads 'chatting' on the mic....in the commotion..dropped a 12" copy of the big tune of the moment 'bandelero' by pinchers, seemed to drop in slow motion and landed on its edge...breaking into many pieces...still got it as a reminder of a top night miles from home
-
missed it last night as i had a tune arrive from the states and went straight on the dex when i got home..... just watched it and to be honest was just what i expected for tea time tv....i reckon if it wasnt for the souled out film coming out they wouldnt have done it which is why i dont think wasnt supposed to be about the scene of today but about wigan.... ogrady was always gonna take the piss....and todays youngsters arent gonna get that anymore than watcing 60 years old with brylcream in their hair jiveing !...it may get some old soulies attending again....which on one hand could be good to fill some of these half empty nights that people talk about ...but then again if all they ask for is frank wilson and gloria jones maybe not such a good thing ! as for the dancin....to watch someone spin or backdrop in time to a break in a tune maybe once loooks good but yeah constantly doin it looks a bit shit.....but i suppose when you only have a couple of mins on a tv show people just sliding around would be a bit boring to the veiwers ?? the clothes ?...yeah looked a bit shit but actually a lot of kids are wearing 70s tank tops etc...i play at an indie night in bris and some of them do wear that shit !...maybe not the baggies and big skirts though.... i know im defending it ...i just dont think it was that bad and no more than we could expect from tv sadly.....dont think it will do any harm ....people who dont get it already take the piss out of me anyway !!!
-
good luck sammy and all others involved...hope i get back from work earlier enuff...although i suppose it will be on here soon !!
-
somebody snap up the esquires how could it be.....check out a sound file on manships site cos its an awesome peice of uptempo crossover !!!!....been playing it all year floorfiller , just gotta dance....best tenner you will spend !
-
also lots of great reggae tunes are originally c&w songs....!... think it was beenie man who recently recorded a c&w song in a nashville studio !...loved to see their faces when he walked in...

i love it cos it has the lot ,great lyrics (mostly!)...great molodies and a beat that makes you wanna dance !!!....your soul is suppose to be that part of you deep inside ...the real you...thats why this music has its name...it reaches the parts even heinekin cant ! why are most of us white ?....despite it being black music i suppose the northern scene is part of white working class culture, maybe cos back in the day youngsters didnt use to mix quite as much as todays clubbers ??....'most' black people that i know either like reggae or hip hop which is more laid back and the dancin is about looking cool rather than dancing your nuts off, sweating your tits off and generally not looking that sexy !!... its odd but most ROOTS/dub reggae gigs are also mainly white crowds, other than the REAL religious rastas...in the main the black crowd go for the ragga/dancehall ting i guess the black thing is just not a retro thing....i can vaguely remember i tv programme about the u.s and hip hop and that said in the u.s something that is 10 years old is past it....i know there are black souulsources maybe they know better than me... personally id love to see a more mixed crowd

what i cant believe is that this thread is still going !!....the various threads on this film have lasted longer than it took to film the f****** thing !!.... if you dont like it and the way the crew have behaved thats up to you but i cant understand why it bothers you sooooo much and why you continue to advertise it for them by talkin about it on here ?? as has already been said mistakes will be made(like all films) but IF the worst is a badge 3 years too early i dont think we should worry too much...who the f*** is gonna notice that ???.... and most of the extras probably had an interesting day, didnt have to go OR stay there !! i always tend to see the good in people (dont get me wrong im not naive,if youre a wrong un i normally see it too)..but i dont think they sat around thinkin 'i know what... if we get some sad soulies in as extras it will save us x ammount of dosh. !'...maybe they thought some of us might have want to be involved...? and with the money they did save maybe they spent it on a decent soundtrack...who knows WE WILL HAVE TO WAIT AND SEE !!

agree would probably only be able to do the odd copy....if a couple of dozen copies of a BIG tune all in good nick suddenly appeared after supposedly 40 years i think we would all be naturally suspicious and wouldnt touch em
