  1. enjoy your weekend!...one for the diary thats not to far away..fri 14th oct 'going to a happening' grand atlantic hotel weston super mare seafront...trobridge matt, pete french and myself with special guest mr ted massey dean
  2. me..as its my gig and i can gaurentee uptempo from the off...do my set and join the dancefloor sean chapman...fro his enthusiasm...playing what he wants...oldies,a couple of newies..mod and even finishing on a ska track! mick lloyd...awesome rnb set at the last go go ted massey...always great des parker...always brilliant mick h...starting to get more unknown tunes now as its getting later! soul sam..had to be in there andy dyson...great at lifeline butch...finishing with the best of today a bit of everything i reckon....more oldies at the beginning...rarer for the die hard niter goers later on dean
  3. i played it at go go children bout a 18 months ago a couple of times but not heard it round these parts since p.s gutted i didnt get to soulfusion nige...still limping around with sciatica..hope you had a good one dean
  4. cant beleive we're talkin bout christmas already!....yes its boring but gotta be done with family, especially as i live 230 miles away from parents and only see em couple of times a year dean
  5. go go children is on the first saturday of every month in bristol and is always well attended and has a great atmosphere, across the board sounds and ages!..always a friendly vibe, northern ,rnb classics and unknown with the odd ska tune thrown in..9 till 2am only £3 guest on the 1st oct is matt from trowbridge who has some big indemanders and put together a great set too on the 24th i believe riverside in gloucester is on which is normally a good little soul night dean
  6. i think people in the 20s are the best we can expect...there will be a few younger (probably who grew up with soulie/scooterist parents) and respect to them for not being swept along with all the bullshit media/music most teenagers are..
  7. i dont think ah alnighter with hour sets of rare and oldies would work,as has been said too many only dance to 'their' thing..personally i like two rooms so i can switch between the two...if only one room i would prefer mainly all unknown/undreplayed to all oldies as would a lot on here but most of us are collectors so still have that desire for sumfin new...as we know their are more who wanna dance to things they know, which isnt exclusive to northern...i did an indie gig for 4 years and started off trying to get them into..well small inderpendant bands.. but it soon become apparent all they wanted was the big hits....at go go children we play unknown and oldies but each dj mixes it up in a 3/4 hour set BUT we have the luxury of being in a big city with a crowd split in the middle with soulies and youngsters who are hearing it all for the first time and just wanna dance to sumfin good so are not blinkered.... the scene may be spilt and may get smaller especially if the recession drags on but is that a bad thing?...there will be those who go to one and those who go to the other and some like me who generally can enjoy both...i suppose the oldies scene although the biggest at the moment is more likely to shrink first because of the average age of the punter ? dean
  8. offtread but have to agree with ray agee..top dancer..catchy as f+++! great rhythm and wow what vocals..no wonder its so bloody expensive!! by the way excuse me if im being thick but how do you pronounce the g in his name?...is it like grape or giant? never been sure dean
  9. bought ' take me as i am' by tony adams on checker years back without checking thinkin it was the freddie hughes stomper...turned out to be a far earlier mid tempo piece of nuffin really ...gutted...until i played the flip a wicked deep/ballad? 'the blues dont like nobody'...only cost a fiver, later got the freddie hughes off manship for 20 dean
  10. out every weekend...mainly in the sw about 60 miles radius of bristol due to £....due to diabetis nowadays i cant drive straight back from niters any further..need to get hotels and have a sleep first otherwise i do it on the motorway which niccis doesnt like!... last weekend...friday soul at worcester then back home..intended to go straight to bed and go to cardiff a go go on the saturday but a some good friends of ours called and needed rescuing form a shit party so they came over and i think i stopped playing tunes about 4 in the afternoon saturday so didnt go out..... best night this year not including ones i play at?? bloody hard...impossible infact out of the last radcliffe,a couple of lifelines, bidds on nye or maybe kings hall in july they have a great rare room now remember so best of both worlds!!...if i lived 60 miles more up the m5 i would be a regular at all of em instead of maybe one or two of each a year ive got things booked for every weekend this year and already penciling in for next... dean this weekend...stayin in friday night, record fair early saturday mornin and then soulfusion in gloucester saturday
  11. got one of these on uk president..... another good couple of shouts...hes the one/bit of honey and donald heights talk of the grapevine and how fast is freddie scotts i'll be gone!! great drums dean
  12. picked up the exciters/number one off a mate for a tenner a while back, nice little tune...has it been played out much and if so where? cant remember hearing it out myself...might chuck it in my playbox for the next go go dean
  13. thanx for the mention mrs soul,(did mick introduce us outside worcester friday night?)...go go children in bristol does tick a lot of the boxes that people seem to want..BUT...although we play mainly rnb and northern and some funky edged there may be a little ska or even a couple of soulful british beat so i suppose its not strictly a soulnight.... we do play 'new' tunes every month as we are all collectors before we are djs but we wont play a tune because of its value, none of us can afford a tune we dont love and have faith in!...we do let the djs play want thay want(as long as its 60s)...there will be classics..but there will also be unknowns....we have older soulies who have been there and done it but we have loads of youngsters hearing this music for the first time...sometimes its rammed (120) and you wont have loads of room on the floor....but the atmosphere the youngsters create at these nights is brilliant..and it gets f****** hot!...everyone is friendly and we have a good sound, wooden danceloor, low ceiling and a balcony by the floor to chill out on...its taken a few years but even the youngsters are not taking their drinks on the floor...our guest djs have included sean chapman, pete tebbutt, des parker, mick lloyd, johnny beggs, trowbridge matt and a couple of local unknowns steve conner and rocker...and in the next few months we have matts return visit,dr pickles and big george weve thought about takin on downstairs in the club makin room for another 150 people but this would cost us more money so adm would go up from our credit crunching £3 and some people say would lose the vibe we have at the moment with one room...and ofcourse things can change overnight especially in a recession so will carry on as we are for now...3 years ago when we started we woud have hoped but really never have thought we would be as we are..but who knows it wont be everyones cup of tea but what night is...maybe theyre being polite but most people i know from the soul scene who have attended have loved it and its been said 'its like a breath of fresh air'.... i go out everyweek and enjoy almost everynight i go to but i dont want it all my way...like people have said search for the nights you like...live and let live a bit..and have a good time....the scene IS alive and kicking...maybe its you that are not dean
  14. maybe youre right....but i thought it was funny
  15. oh nad none of this is unique to the soul scene either.... years ago i used to dj with a sound system playing dancehall reggae (long before sean paul ,shabba etc were household names) in norwich,...yes thats right,norwich....loads of people didnt wanna know, kept askin for something they knew..israelites,one in ten or bob marley about 6 years ago i was asked to be resident at a bristol indie night...tried to play great new bands, real indie...nobody danced..put pulp blur or oasis on the place went mental... back in the rave days of the 90s you could go to a techno or drum and bass night in 3 or 4 different clubs every thurs/fri and saturday in bristol...got to a point where there was too many...scene didnt die,its still there every weekend if you want it just fewer nights dean
  16. i did the rave scene for a couple of years in the 90s before gettin bored...human traffic...brilliant film and just like the scene back then...it can be done dean
  17. yes in some areas there are too many nights...you would expect that those promoters who are the most passionate would be the better nights and even if numbers where down due to a shit promoter down the road,mr passionate isnt in it for the money so as long as he breaks even will be around after mr shit has given up..as hes not so passionate and also isnt makin money witha split crowd... yes there are many different 'styles of soul' (good name for a night, maybe i'll start a new one ) how can this be bad, whether a 3 room event or all in one just find what you like best, attend and enjoy...oldies,newies,rnb,funky edged...no ones right or wrong yes a lot of soulies will not be around in 5/10 years through difficulties dancin ona polished floor with with a zimmer..but maybe more twenties and teens who will be older, outgrown pop shite and not so bothered about dancin with us in our30s/ 40s who will then be in our40/ 50s will...who knows djs...maybe there are too many but as im one cant blame anyone for doing it...and some of the older ones will also give up in years to come...and as long as we keep the ovo policy i shouldnt have thought there would be as many starting...same old sets?...yes but as the the scene is split there are plenty who love to know everytune they are gonna get ...sadly...but again most of these are reliving their teens back in the days of wigan so wont be around for ever whereas those youngsters getting into it now are not so blinkered cos they dont know whats a classic and what isnt...and are getting into all sttyles not just 'northern' there are plenty of djs who play a mixed set, love what they are doin, but never get enough slots bad attitudes ?..probably due to the internet, people wouldnt be so rude face to face anyway i love the soul scene...NEARLY always enjoy myself and support loads of nights and i know loads more people like me so im not worried about' the end is nigh' some of us on forums take it all a little too serious and think without us it couldnt possibly carry on...others like me are havin a slow day at work see you out on the floor somewhere..i'll be the one enjoying myself dean
  18. 'lets make a baby'...soulful lovers reggae from the 70s by ruddy thomas produced by joe gibbs er....got an original 7 on uk trenchtown for a tenner if anyone wants one dean
  19. another shout for just loving you /ruby andrews BORING!...always sends me to the bar and still played out WAY TOO F******* MUCH!! dean
  20. i didnt mind soulboy despite the mistakes and obvious story, took it for what it was..a bit of fun viewing...have a feeling this will be much better though...if the dancin practise sessions on you tube and facebook are anything to go by it will be...have to wait n see i guess dean
  21. not been to iow scooter rally for a couple of years now,too bloody expensive!...but enjoy it all who are going takin my scoot to be dynoed sat mornin and then i shall be at the weston alnighter saturday... dean
  22. as has been said probably looking at you with envy mate, especially if you are doin spins without almost falling over and backdrops without putting your backout!!... loads of youngsters in the camber sands scooter rally soul room ...and down in bristol at go go children, more and more in 'mod' attire makin the right dance moves but not all, some are just into great music and a good night out... you are MORE than welcome by most i think dean
  23. i went to the first night and had a great time BUT it did take me 2 1/2 hours from bristol!...personaly this means an overnight stay (driving back on twisty a roads after no sleep would be suicide for me) which puts the price up and its been a busy summer so have had to pick and choose...friday night with no motorway is a nightmare to be honest...i can get upto the gloucester niters on a friday in 3/4 hour and can get to stoke in less than 2...i think this may be part of it...cant speak about the south coast scene but if you add to that the recession...those locals who prefer just oldies...the locals who ARE just oldies.. its gonna be hard work and sadly maybe not worth tryin its not just alnighters though...martin pilnock worked hard with a soul night in weston and we expected more than the 106 who attended ...enough for a great night but not enough to break even...1 person from weston there i believe...martin will try again on oct 14th but if it doesnt work that will be one more great venue that will probably never hold another soul night its sad to hear when promoters have worked hard and nights have to close but we all know there are too many nights on,especially in a recession so 'thats life i guess' dean
