  1. im playing in bath tonite and i know its not ovo but im not going to be lazy and play a grapevine tomangoes...im gonna play my originals...its not just our taste that make us different djs its all our financial situations and thats a good thing because it means loads of brilliant cheaper tunes get heard!...and every dj SHOULD find and have his own style...simple! dean
  2. right this has been done to death but this is my take on some points raised.....quotes shortened 'pre 85 most people played boots and wasnt a prob '...well pre internet originals were still bloody hard to get so thats probably why...now theres no excuse 'people at oldies nites dont care its only rare soul fans'....well i think oldies fans would if every night they went to every dj was playing the same big tunes and i mean every night ..im sure even oldies fans would bet board...nites like the kings hall etc would not then be so special and also big recent tunes like jt parker etc would probably have not have been discovered if every dj could get away with playing a £10 jackie day or parliaments...why bother going to the states and discovering the new killers!...how long would the scene last then...if the stafford djs just played wigan boots etc 2nd issues? i think ifwe are talkin 60s and they are still 60s releases(remember most big label 7" singles had a lot long run back then, and the local/national label) then thats fine ann sexton yellow 77...if its a 70s 2nd issue ann sexton multi coulured then no same for uk releases...60s columbia fine...70s inferno's no..play the yankie if its not been released in uk in the 60s...if its not been release in the us or uk in the 60s as with a lot of kent than ofcourse thats fine these are my opinions and rules for ME ..not complicated at all...and rules that will keep this scene alive dean
  3. be good to see you....you might not like everything you hear but you would hear something new and get off on the atmosphere.... you wouldnt get bored!!.... dean
  4. i think again it depends where you are...we play in bristol every month and have different people every month so even if a nite opens near by and we miss a few of our regulars one month which is a shame but there are enough people for us to have a good nite ,our cost are low and we dont care if we dont make money and have never yet lost....a smaller town with less people to go round i think starting another night could stop travellers from going 50 miles up the road if something is already on and have more of an effect both financially and 'friendship' wise this is also a reason why our monthly nights dont seem to get stale as well as us playing so many genre's and all being collecters instead of dj's and not just chasing big ticket items so we have quality new tunes each month ...i'd love some of those big indemanders but could never save up for months without buying someting new!! dean
  5. hi bearsy i'm well ,always got a mars bar with me on a nite out! ....regarding the promoters, yeah i agree there are some who dont think about or care about other nights, ive witnessed it here in the sw too but wasnt involved so not my place to say whos right or wrong....this was one of the reasons i was pleasently surprised at pete, dont get me wrong ive always known pete was a nice bloke and he got in touch with me about his dates in 2012 which was already more than anybody else but to cancel one of only a few nights out of friendship and respect is first cllass...if we had clashed he wouldn't have had to worry about losing people it would have been us who did but i'd told him if he couldnt change the date i'd live with it as he only has a few every year and we are monthly...but he still cancelled...hopefully he will still get another night and if he does ive no doubt he will do his best not to clash with the other sw promoters still think people should try and stick to either first or second saturday etc....might take a while and maybe have to miss a few but it can be done hope your skintness doesnt last too long! dean
  6. our night go go children in bristol has been on the first saturday of the month for nearly 4 years...what if promoters with other nights local to them got together and had a specific weekend for them so they all knew where they stood... bridgewater soul nights have been running for 10 years and pete lyster has just cancelled one of his only 3 nights next year because he realised that the 7th of april is actually the first saturday and not the second and so clashes with go go children...top bloke!....especially as if we clashed it would effect us more than them...there would be more go go children regulars go to bridgewater and miss a month than the other way around IT CAN BE DONE PEOPLE dean
  7. i dont but..... what if a dj has one of only two known copies and his is styrene and not in the best nick surely its fine for him to play a carver to keep his in good nick? and he's not on the same nigt as the other original owner ...at least we get to hear the tune for years rather than for a few months(if he's a busy dj) till its f***** or not at all if he doesnt wanna risk it ? dean
  8. i agree mark...ive often said its strange how a scene that is so positive and friendly when you're out can be so negative and unfriendly when on line..... dean
  9. today it was the constellations 'i didnt know how to'...tomorrow i hope it will be mearle speares 'aint no need' if the postie brings it! dean
  10. ..sorry going off topic again !
  11. as i understand it billy its the big commercial hits of motown and atlantic etc which 'normal' people know and can sing a long to...and dance around their handbags in their stilletto's...women that is! dean
  12. as i understand it billy its the big commercial hits of motown and atlantic etc which 'normal' people know and can sing a long to...and dance around their handbags in their stilletto's...women that is! dean
  13. ref. ps...if you were serious ? not always,im guesting at a night in bath on friday which is advertised as northern, tamla and i cant talk for the other djs but i certainly wont be playing any handbag soul!...even if i do slip a couple of motown tracks in..for a change.. dean
  14. anyway ...are you mental?...settle an arguement on here???? dean
  15. AND BOLLOX TO IT ALL!!!!
  16. neither cos strictly speaking dave godins term meant the uptempo mid 60s sound that northerners wanted as apposed to the slower maybe more produced and polished sounds of the late 60s and 70s ....nothing to do with which venue it was played at...and not inc mid tempo...70s..modern...rnb...etc...but it all gets played at northern soul nights just like the double barrel tune that sean chapman played keeps getting called ska..it isnt!..musically it reggae ...similiar to ska but ska finished mid 60s...slowed down to rock steady..and then late 60s ...changed again slightly quicker to' boss' or skinhead reggae...but it all gets calles ska nowadays anyway all a load of bollox really dean
  17. in MY history...1978 aged 11 i bought my first northern record...hey little way out girl on grapevine (which i still have)...from a shop that now sells sandwiches! sorry but you did say no rules dean
  18. northern wise probably kanes cousins/take your love and shove it....blue eyed pop with a northern beat?....intro that sounds like the blackadder theme but i like it...at 4 in the mornin!....would never have the balls to play it out though dean
  19. well not in manships book or on popsike and a nice tune so god knows...thats if its been released of course...and if on an auction site probably more now youve put it on here! dean
  20. what a tune! one of my faves...but only a dream for me owning it dean
  21. good idea if you dont know the tune but dont wanna stop dancin to go and ask the dj what it is!...providing you can see it before it starts to spin ofcourse dean
  22. dont wanna tempt fate but ive been lucky enough not to break any rare ones....had a few come in the post broken a mint copy of a need a helping hand in about 50 bits...gutted to see it had lasted 40 years and then a week in the hands of a postie!... when i was djing at a reggae 'blues' in stoke in the early hours and pitch black dropped a 12" of bandelero by pinchers which was massive at the time but no longer available on 12...a huge chunk broke off,not expensive but still gutted ,could only get in on lp by then sean parry a go go children dj came over to mine to make a go go cd with his tunes in an original 60s 7" 'wallet'...looked nice but not secure,a uk copy of helen shapiro's stop and you'll become aware fell out and broke in two...
  23. got dean parrish to autograph my copy of tell him when he played at hemsby scooter rally a few years back....but then he plays over here so much i guess theres plenty people got his ! dean
  24. get yourself to some dos mate, nuffin like hearing this music LOUD and being on a dancefloor full of likeminded people, you'll love it so much choice to find your thing and im sure theres a few near by..soul night or nighter,as weller said of the casino 'cos when you're dancin all night long,it gives you the feelin that you belong!' dean
