A Laser Turntable Without A Needle
Spacehopper replied to MrsWoodsrules's topic in All About the SOUL
would like to think the price would come down to a more affordable level but like some of you heard about this years ago so not too confident in getting one!... infact the first person to tell me about this was a reggae dealer who would travel to jamaica buy up sound system collections and sell to very wealthy japenese and that was back in about '93!! ...before recently hearing about it on here a couple of times i'd started to think it was one of those memories that im not sure happened at all!! dean -
yep that was the one...

has to be ray charles....influenced soooo many who came after him...saw a tv programme where smokey said he had a book full of lyrics and in one afternoon ray completely arranged and re arranged them and ended up with about 20 great finished tunes...a musical genius dean

the best thing for me is the ammount of tunes out there and the knowledge...always hearing or being told about 'new' tunes...will never know it all...and could be on you tube forever but would still miss tunes you here about either on the floor or via others collections second has to be the people...always meeting and chatting to new people who unlike some of the threads on the internet are always polite and welcoming no bad attitudes when out and about and ive done a few scenes...attending as a punter and djing at scootering, indie and reggae venues and going to techno and drum and bass venues for a few years....none can compere with the soul scene... third...ive always collected vinyl since i was getting them bought for me when i was about 5 to playing my dads before that!....so a scene which i believe will always play vinyl whether original or not is a big draw for me....went to a reggae do in bristol which i hadnt been to in a couple of years and found the dj to be playing via a laptop and cds...made a tongue in cheek remark about what no vinyl? and he went off on one...more attitude in a couple of minutes than ive ever witnessed at a soul night.... and going to different venues every week is also great rather than staying in the same city doing the same venues every week...or month!!!...maybe this also contributes to the less attitude we have with so many people driving a lot less drink and other stuff consumed...very rarly see drunks staggering about mouthing off so yes its a great scene...if youre a new or younger soul sourcer who scared to go out DONT BE!!! youre mising out on some brilliant nites ...long may it continue...i hope...'it will never be over for me' (sorry!)....or at least till i can only make a shuffle around my music room to some mid tempo stuff! dean

Explosive Dynamiks - Whole Lotta Loving
Spacehopper replied to deanosounds's topic in All About the SOUL
i said it wasnt AS good but is still a good tune...and id rather play it than a boot/reissue of this one as i cant afford the original.....or are some of you going back on what was the main opinion of a recent ten page discussion? dean -
Explosive Dynamiks - Whole Lotta Loving
Spacehopper replied to deanosounds's topic in All About the SOUL
great record...had it on a cd for years but will wait for the original...doesnt come along that much though....theres another version on the same original label by a different artist im playing out at the moment...not qiute so good hasnt got the mental keyboards but still a great track and a lot cheaper!!! dean -
i know i came down hard on cds but even i have a use for them...great to give out at go go children and spread our tunes and get those who dont know northern hooked....and yes in the car...skipping tracks is so much easier than going back and forth with a casette!..... dean
-
not suprised really....each to their own but i think cds are shit.....they were sold on their durability..er nope...sounds like the band are their with you..er nope, unless you live in a 32 track studio...i prefer the 'warmer' sound of vinyl anyday...easier than getting up to flip a record over..yes..until downloads came along...on top of that cover art quality has gone down since the 60s/70s cos whats the point spending money on a lp design if its too bloody small to have the disired affect, unlike a 12" sleeve...which you can buy ready made frame to stick your faves on the wall on top of that theirs the physical thing about getting something for your money and collecting which we humans love to do..nothing like a piece of black wax,cds could be data discs, games ,dvds etc i think a lot of cd sales are supermarket based by middle aged people anyway aren't they?...buying shit like rod stewart does soul...or cliff richard does soul....or some classical singer does soul or the 30 greatest ska, punk, new wave, glam, soul new romantic ,disco or whatever genre was in when you were young as i said back in the 80s when all my mates were flogging thier records..there will always be vinyl in my opinion anyway dean
-
ok..think i meant josie anyway didnt i des...cant remember now without going to my box but sure you know the tune i mean..only play 1 of your cover ups!!
-
yeah i recognised a few from kings hall...although i'd seen them at kings hall before i saw the dance practise vids... dean

absolutely brilliant track..always request it when des and ted are playing ...lucky for me ran over to the decks when des was playing it uncovered at cheltenham years ago...unlucky for me couldnt afford one even if i knew where there was one!! dean
-
looks good to me but then i liked soulboy with all its cheese and mistakes so what do i know...as has been said its only a bloody film a bit of entertainment....looks a bit more ruffer than soulboy which would be good but then as i understand it this trailer was made a couple of years back so hope the finished article wont be too polished dean think i may have said somewhere already the youngsters on you tube seem to be getting into the music so be good if they start getting into the scene and spreading the faith and not just keeping it

pretty obvious from my pic...i had my lammy sprayed orange with black trim and it was my 20th century toy designed in the 60s(69) but made popular in the 70s...had to be spacehopper....got it on the side panels.....put a d in on the front of the scoot (spacedhopper). ..surprising how many people dont realise for ages.... dean
-
maybe i should have posted the majority of regular posters in my opinion are original collectors.....which would be the 1% you mention....i know lots of people who are members but hardly ever post..mainly because although they love northern with a passion and are out every week they dont really care what format it is and dont wanna get dragged into arguements because of their opinions ...there are then those dealers and big djs who very rarely post (unless about an event or sales)but are members and im sure read it most days.... dean
-
agree with nev i dont think there would be more people spending big money on originals pushing the price up,think they would either buy cheaper more unknown originals ,which would be a good thing,or probably keep to cds as far as the poll goes...interesting bit of fun maybe but not a 100% representation of the uk northern scene as soul source is 'mainly' made up of original collectors, whether djs or not...most people i know who either dont collect vinyl or buy boots dont go on soul source...they think we are all soul snobs..cant think where they get that idea from !! dean

straight answer go go children bristol..was on that night in question i believe...originals ?...YES myself, john stapleton, ian mccree and guest trowbridge matt dean ps 'going to a happening' this friday grand atlantic weston supa mere...originals ?...YES myself, matt, pete french and guest ted massey

played in bath..was as i expected only a couple of dozen tops BUT was just a little room at the back of a pub...free entry...me (playing ovo, trying to slip some unknown things in) and the 2 residents one playing mainly handbag motown, the other classics, the expensive ones being reissues etc they are a couple who support go go children and are tryin to do a little something for bath.....bath has always been a hard nut to crack with very few locals into soul and unlike bristol the younger ones dont really seem to wanna know...with the local travellers mainly travelling to torquay and porthcawl on saturday i knew it would be quiter than last time i played...but it was a favour for some friends and i always try to play if people are nice enuff to ask me!...and a chance to give some flyers out for weston this friday and go go children too so..... dean

Is Playing A Boot At A Venue Ever Acceptable
Spacehopper replied to Dave West's topic in All About the SOUL
no worries mike..i realise that...i did it once, not again and yes lots of grey..especially on me head! -
agree music is more important than numbers at our club we are averaging about 90 in a small club and thats about right for comfort...weve had a few nights it gets down to 50 and we still have a good night...some prefer it ,more room to dance....but any lower and we lose money...its not the reason we do it but none of us can afford to lose.......need every penny for more vinyl! dean

ha!..well i actually did that at go go a few years back on inferno before i had it on sassy...it was for a good friends birthday, his fave tune and all that...but as a rule only on the 3 yankie 60s issues...as there wasnt a 60s uk issue dean
