while i agree there are maybe too many nights ,especially in some areas i obviously dont agree with an advertising restriction mate as go go children in bristol is a monthly night.....we have been on the first saturday now for nearly two years and coming upto our 4th birthday some local promoters think of us and dont clash others dont and do.....if you know what i mean! its a shame when it happens not just because we lose a few but because i would like to go to their gigs too!!....luckily for us we are close to bristol centre and bristol being what it is we can attract enuff people, non travelling soulies and WELL BEHAVED NON SOULIES to cover costs at least and have a good night... i always advertise on soul source, maybe it helps ,maybe not i think you have to use every form of media you can nowadays...forums,flyers,posters,facebook and word of mouth the only answer to nights clashing is down to the promoters...as nighters especially rely on travellers i dont think there is any need for any new nights (...as i said on the south coast thread when some thought it was a good idea to have another nighter)... those that are on need to work together and try and have their individual nights (like we do) on the same 1st or 3rd friday or saturday of the month, whichever it may be.....with all the internet etc we have wouldnt it be great if all the big allnighters at least were all on different weekends right through the year...obviously with booking venues this wouldnt be easy to start with but after a while who knows...it can be done but would take compromise occasionally i believe next year will be even tougher...bidds im sure was only quite because it so close to xmas...i know i would have rather been up there than the local night i went to (even though i had a good time) but stoke for me is an overnight stop and 3 times more expensive when all is considered...i hope to be up NYE...and if i still have a job and mace carries on....next year too, lets hope so dean

richard knight and watson and the sherlocks are brilliant bargains!...watson has a crackin b side too dean

good post...the cd i have of the philly station was definately aimed at the black side of town!....the jingles are mental...FAST jive talkin...with the fashions of the day.....cant imagine many white americans catching most of what they were saying!!...reminds me a lot of the pirate stations in the big cities of today talking patios and aiming for the jamaican parts of bristol, london etc
-
not sure if i agree with that to be honest....put next to motown most of what we call northern is TOO BLACK which is precisely why it never made it back then and only got plays on the black stations and clubs and not the whit IMHO...colleges would have played some but a lot of more gargage/soul or as ive heard it called 'phrat' rock
-
played in clubs in the black areas of all major cities and radio stations...got a cd at home cant remember the jock but its from philly about 69...loads of stuff on their i recognise including jingles by carl holmes with snippets of soul dance number 3!! alongside the bigger tunes by james brown etc... ....remember they also had the bands playing live at their clubs as most were locals in places like detroit chicago and philly....in the 70s my parents used to go to the U.S bases in norfolk ,my auntie was married to a black american and most of the crowd were black dancing to smaller soul bands over from the states, not the big motown acts..sadly shes forgot the names now...will try dig out some pics when i go up at xmas dean dean
-
ofcourse a lot of the stuff we call and dance to as northern would have been played on the beach scene and at teen hi school dances back then....think i would have rather been at the black underground and probably illegal rnb and soul clubs though!....kinda like a lot of the dodgy reggae clubs ive been to and played at in the past!! dean
-
while i think we can all feel a little sense of pride in keeping soul music going and giving a new lease of life to records and artists which didnt get national exposure back in the day i think we also have to realise we were not the first people to play and dance to this music!... ...whatever it was called..black rnb and soul music was definately being played and danced to when it was being made all over the states...if not why are the so many records about dance crazes!...check out the condition of some of the records coming over from the states that have sat in boxes for 40 years...theyve been played and danced to alright!...its great having a mint record as a collector but theres also something about having a record with a little wear,a little history of other people way back enjoying it too... ...and as has already been said its great seeing feedback on you tube from both black and white memories of dances and tunes its not so different today...there are clubs all over the uk and states playing hip hop and dancehall reggae which are on small independant labels and will never make it into the charts...but those artists are huge in those areas although unknown to the wider public...its nuffin new and like i said we were not the first...although they danced very different of course...they would have danced in couples!! dean

Calling All Southern/south Coast Soulies
Spacehopper replied to Russ Vickers's topic in All About the SOUL
thanx mike!....its just i read people saying do it! and i also see, working with martin at 'going to a happening' at the grand atlantic in weston how hard and stressfull it can be....if you are running a nite for 250 people plus, the venue, sound, flyers, big name djs all cost a lot of money...we got 106 in on our first nite in weston, the club was about half full and we got a great atmospherewith nige brown, sean chapman, pete french, trowbridge matt and myself... but martin still lost a lot of money and that was without paying me or trowbridge matt(which isnt a problem by the way!)....and thats with martin out EVERY weekend!... dean -
Calling All Southern/south Coast Soulies
Spacehopper replied to Russ Vickers's topic in All About the SOUL
wasnt going to get involved with this one but....sorry to be a bit negative but are there REALLY enough soulies in the south west GOING OUT to warrent another night? as i understand it there are already a couple of good nights down there...let me explain....take the handbaggers out (no,not with a gun!)...oldies only crowd....and then those who already attend local nights and go up north regular because as hard as you try its almost immpossible not to clash with something...how many are left?...as dave said a lot smaller numbers than has been said previous... im living in bristol and came down to the first soul in the south alnighter and had a great nite...but...the drive was a nightmare, almost 2 hours and im only about 65 miles away!...i can get to bidds ,lifeline, wooten hall, riverside, soulfusion, bridgwater, torquay in that time and even nearly radcliffe etc....how many weekends left?.... ive been promoting in various genres of musicfor years and it can be a very hard job...great when it works but very depressing and expensive when it doesnt...and its not an easy time at the moment...go go children in bristol is lucky,we have about 50 regular soul fans and can make that upto 100 most months because of where we are....lots of students etc but no pissheads wanting to cause trouble, everyone gets off on the buzz whether they know the tunes etc or not...after 3 years we must be the only club in bristol where there are very rarely drinks on the dancefloor...a lot of soul nites ive been to where numbers have been down they've let locals in to pay the bills and its pissed soulies off and ruined both the night and reputation of the event for the future.... we also have quite low expenses so we will never be rich with only 3 adm but we never lose money....but even so...people still say they will be there and then somethings crops up and they dont make it sometimes...if you have a big bill to pay it only takes a few to drop out.... like i said at the beginning...sorry to be so negative but with nites already on and the scene today so spilt between oldies, handbaggers, rare etc....i wouldnt bother after all isnt it said on here time and time again how there are too many nights on? BUT GOOD LUCK IF YOU DO!!!!!!! dean -

Anyone Know Anything About This - The Phantom
Spacehopper replied to Pete S's topic in Look At Your Box
ive got one...got it maybe 12 months back from ebay...good tune...know nuffin about it though dean -
:D ..you two should be on stage...britains next comedy duo...with special guest johnny beggs! dean
-
unbelievable!...but fair play mace...it give us all hope to one day getting that tune we think we will never afford... dean

i agree..i believe evryone is always learning no one knows it all BUT i can remember when i first started collecting ORIGINALS it was a nightmare didnt have a clue but now i know certain things to look out for like the monarch pressing number for instance, even the best counterfeit wont have the right number...and once you know that hundreds of boots are instantly obvious...although there were a couple of mirwood with right number but wrong stamp i believe bobby garrett and jimmy thomas ...but even with these after years collecting the 'shine' on their labels just look wrong...or it could be the thickness of a run out groove or the record itself...or the bevelled edged which later pressings had...all these things come easy with experience for those who dont have manships guide ...a lot of the 70s look a like boots were pressed at the same plant as a lot of originals years ealier BUT along with the mr stamp there was a number scratched..and a rule of thumb is if it starts with a 5/6 its 60s eg 65407 by the time they'd got to the early seventies the numbers may be 9/10 5406 so if its a 60s tunes with that number it must be a boot or re issue at least!.....at work so numbers are just for example cant remember exactly what they were upto at the end of the 60s! talkin of boots (for a change!)...has anyone noticed how many 'new' boots are on ebay.com nowadays!...stopped going on .co.uk as i was fed up with trawling through shit loads of repros now the yankie site seems nearly as bad !! dean
-
theres also the arguement about original uk as opposed to original fullstop!....let me explain..marvin gayes love starved heart was not released in the uk until chris kings legit release but WAS released in the us so although it may be original uk issue, when djing at least its not an original... it gets easier dean

Marvin Gaye - This Love Starved Heart - Proper One With P/s
Spacehopper replied to Pete S's topic in Look At Your Box
yes a great tune but was one that got moaned about on here for being overplayed at kings hall a few years back....but then thats was 3 times a night!!...but the floor was still full personally i love it and would like a proper one but not for 250..lots of better tunes for that out there...but thats only my opinion it will ofcourse sell for that dean -
i think maybe the fact that a lot of this music as with reggae were made by minor labels with producers only paying the artists pittance to sing a track is today in our favour by the sheer ammount of tunes recorded...perhaps? dean
-
my best advice would be to buy manships latest price guide...not because of the prices but for all the information on bootlegs!...especially when buying off ebay...can get a bargain but dont wanna pay over the top for bootlegs described as rare good luck and happy hunting! dean
-
i would say just what you did...commercial reggae...not quite hard enough for 'roots' or soft enough for 'lovers'..... as far as dancehall goes i think it does include some reggae...artists such as sanchez and frankie paul are dancehall...digital rhythms built for the danchall as opposed to full bands playing highly produced music but still musically reggae... before the roots and dancehall acts such as wailing souls and yellowman shared the same rhythms....unlike 'ragga' which is another sub genre of reggae with a different beat which takes over from the bassline as the most important bit...especially when dancing...this complete change in rhythm happened about '91 with tunes like 'bogle' by buju banton which was named after and about the new dance to this type of rhythm...named after a man who started the dance whos surname was bogle can remember working with a sound system in norwich at that time importing tunes straight from JA and people saying thats not reggae...how do you dance to that?!...now artists like sean paul and beenieman are household names to a generation of kids who have grown up with it...and can even be heard in the background on eastenders!! just like soul has....rnb,tamla,northern,crossover,mid-tempo,70s,modern etc...all very different but still connected and influenced by each over as time passed so has reggae....ska,rocksteady,boss 'skinhead'reggae, roots, lovers,uk steppers,dub,dancehall,ragga... IMO dean

here we go again!! ;-)..no not boots and some would be 'original uk' as far as selling goes...i know this thread isnt about it but as far as ovo venues go then if there is a 60 us release, that is the one to be played....im not looking down my nose at these and just like those 70s look-a-like boots etc i know their important contribution to the uk soul scene but if its 60s music and theres a 60s release thats the one to play which is where i believe these differ from uk sue releases etc ...but hey thats just my opinion...which ive posted on a few threads now so must make mental note not to bother again!! ;-) dean
