  1. yeah thats it carl stewart and the sonics....didnt see the auctioned tune and this wasnt in his book but had a soundclip on ebay...nice uptempo slightly funky dancer
  2. baby help me-percy sledge $6 atlantic...lovin this at the moment lets do it-carl stewart £18...anyone know anything about this? on copyright records forget about that mess-the marvels £12 dean
  3. well personally i dont think a mans ego can harm the scene in any way but like it or not levine playing at the 100 club will probably bring more people in than push them away and that cant be a bad thing as crowds have been down at a lot of venues of late... there are a lot of big egos on this and any scene but the music will carry on regardless dean
  4. just seen it on facebook too....sure he will be good....either you have an ear for a tune or not and ians history says he has..wotever some of you may think of him....reckon it will be good for the scene to have him back dean
  5. this thread came to mind when i was dancin around the floor at bidds new years eve...at that point there was probably about 15 dancers and only 3 blokes!...it was early hours...maybe women, er.... of our age have more stamina! dean
  6. and you billy..hope youre out dancin somewhere!
  7. although rioters with petrol bombs etc do tend to make most things burn
  8. plenty of people more qualified to talk about grapevine on here than me billy but for instance a friend of mine bought narbay on grapevine as a uk original which it is but it was still released in the 70s when there is a 60s us release...just down to individual promoters and djs when it comes to playing out i suppose other tracks such as betty boo were only released on grapevine as far as i know dean
  9. the chances-it takes more than love £9 jimmy mccraklin-the drag £10 bobby jones-i got a habit £10 dean
  10. i think thats what he means and a debatable issue with different opinions i think.....most would probably not been issued in the uk before so will be uk originals BUT if they have been released before in the us then that is the true original in my opinion for playing out purposes dean
  11. and wouldn't tightly stacked in boxes or on shelves be harder than say a pile tipped out on the floor?
  12. this thread has gone off topic but i have to agree there is still loads of semi known uptempo 60s soul tunes to dance too...im not a mid tempo fan at all....and i dont mind some oldies played either agree there is more funky stuff played but most of it i can still dance to how i dance to northern its not a 'get on the good foot' beat...but then was 'so is the sun' northern? theres more rnb played...but isnt that better than blue eyed pop and endless instrumentals inc tv theme tunes? the music has always changed from the wheel to wigan, mecca, stafford etc...its never been 100% northern two scenes...what like the mecca/cleethorpes and wigan? both scenes are responsible if there is a split, its not just the rare soul driving a wedge...maybe some oldies fans could actually give some 'new' tunes a try and some of the rare fans could put up with a few more oldies being played at go go in bristol we advertise on our flyers '60s soul' cos thats what it is...some rare... some not...some oldies...some unknown...although we even throw in a couple of 70s...occasionally ..as long as theyre more upbeat...and only a couple mind dean
  13. hey little way out girl the del capri...grapevine pic sleeve.....bought it in 78 aged 11...older bruv already had it which is where i heard it...bought from ace records in norwich...great little shop full of northern, punk and reggae...now no longer there, think its a sandwich shop now...and yep ive still got it... but before that aged about 5/6 in 72/73 (because i had crazy horses/the osmonds) i would play my dads 45s...not allowed to touch the lps!...faves would be...youre not an ordinary girl...the temptations and roadrunner/shotgun...jr walker both on uk motown and little queenie...bil blacks combo on silver/black london...i think, obviously way before id heard of northern or even soul...but can remember watching the record spin round thinkin 'bill blacks combo' they sound rubbish i wonder what they look like(remember these were the days of acts called alvin stardust and gary glitter!)....but i just loved the tune dean
  14. agree too and have said that on various oldies/newies posts...those that only go to oldies events were once those shouting for new tunes every week!... think its an age thing with SOME people and not just the soul scene.....there are old rock n rollers who still go to weekenders dancing to elvis etc...i also know a couple of more rock billy types who come to go go ocasionalyl for the rnb and some of the soul who are constantly turned on by new finds in their genres and wouldnt be seen dead dancing to jailhouse rock
  15. agree...sorry for banging on about about go go children again but...we do mix it up between oldies and unknown stuff and no the youngsters dont know the difference if its good they'll dance...its the some of the older ones who walk on and off the floor depending on if they know it...ofcourse the youngsters would know the difference between a typical blue eyed wigan pop stomper and a funky edged thing of today but between that funky thing and stanky(a classic oldie) ...nope
  16. exactly i never went to wigan...way too young and miles away but ive heard a lot of people complain (mainly on here to be honest, sorry mike but its true)about TOTP and THIS ENGLAND saying it was better before..despite all the good tunes amoung the rubbish that was played there after and those that came and stayed to this day because of it.....and this film with the help of someone famous like pw could do that positive thing for this scene..which was my point really ....i came via 80s scooter scene but also via my older brother who went to yate,st ives etc...im not sure if he was a TOTP/TE convert ...think it was always played in the youth clubs/teen discos of norwich anyway and my parents had been into soul before so was used to it on the sony stereo...
  17. to be honest i dont think there will ever be a mass in flux of people as in the 70s after TOTP which i know a lot of people thought ruined wigan, remember in the 70s the choice was very slim..disco,pop glam or prog rock?...a lot werent even able to hear reggae except what was played on radio one on the major labels....today there are so many genres and most youngsters will stick to the 'dance' music of today i think...but hopefully this film will increase the numbers in a way where it wont be detramental to the scene and those joining will do because they like it and not to take the piss as we have all witnessed at venues.... we often get youngsters and non soulies at go go children....some of the youngsters know it is 60s soul and come for that reason but others are just passing by and come in and get off on the buzz some have a good night but dont come back while others become regulars... at the moment not travelling outside of bristol but who knows in a few years occasionally one may take the piss but soon gives up as hes the the odd one out looking a dick...after 4 years it certainly hasnt been a problem for us dean
  18. yeah i did wonder when i wrote that would it be good for the soul scene as a whole or just the oldies scene!
  19. well he said a couple of stupid things and said a few true things as expected really....but i think the type of youngster who will actually sit up and listen to northern wont be bothered with what pw says...and thats type we want...those that arent gonna bother about the piss taking just like we didnt/dont.....yes shame we didnt hear more from elaine but im sure she would agree all publicity for the film is good publicity.... surely its better than no body in the media ever talking about northern at all?....if you keep it to yourself in 20 years time it will be gone....with more youngsters who will be bitten like us for life it might be still about...and you never know we might get some of our money back on our vinyl too! dean ps and ofcourse it might also get a few more out of the living rooms who havnt danced for years
  20. hes probably too young to remember when it was played in youth clubs etc ?....i know im in the sw and not up north but most people i speak to under 40,even those who know a lot about music have never heard of 'northern' soul its just 60s soul/motown to them i know hes a dj but most 'daytime' djs today are just presenters really not big music fans dean
  21. 8 30am on bbc tv news...too darn soulful 10 pm radio 2...i believe
  22. 8 30 i believe dean
  23. maybe it is abuse but its still a negative attitude in my eyes to my opinion that a certain record is played too much and not too my taste rather than positive debate about that subject ...its the kind of thread which would make people stop using a forum and it happened to me which is why i brought it up....and ive often seen you remove posts because they are negative ,abusive or whatever you want to call it as far as how many posts are positive or negative then yes maybe there are more positive than negative so maybe 'constant' was the wrong word....maybe i should have said that i wasnt surprised pw was getting a slating from some on here for daring to say anything about northern ...which is really my point...why do some people on here think its a bad thing that a famous person is speaking about northern?...
  24. just seen on fb that elaine from the northern soul film will also be on bbc tomorrow.....maybe pete wont be the son of satan now he's possibly doing it to promote her new film ?...its at 830am so will be at work and miss it unless its on you tube or bbc site later
  25. i dont think its a case of people not handling others with different views mike.....for instance in the thread on what tune do you not like to hear played out i posted another shout for 'just loving you' and was told i knew nothing about music, was mentally retarded and probably had a lighthouse cd in my collection..now you may laugh but hardly constructive debate and as i didnt know the poster it wasnt banter....
