  1. if you wanna go early nige...you do...dont have to explain it....although i do think a dj should GET there early...dont like seeing djs turn up half hour before there set...unless they've been djing elsewhere ofcourse or stuck in traffic..but know a couple of seen do this on more than one occasion...
  2. was apost on fb by someone over the moon they had an emi copy of sex pistols 'anarchy in the uk' they got off ebay for £100+ and how it was worth shit loads and rare as f***...didnt have the heart to tell him he was probably thinkin of god save the queen and there were pages of 'anarchy' on popsike...some a lot cheaper than he paid
  3. sweet memories lp on universal includes a great slow version of i surrender too...a couple on discogs for sale at the moment if you google 'sweet memories eddie holman' dean
  4. across the board sets probably work best at oldies nights as that crowd want to dance to tracks they know and grew up with whatever the style.... i can have a good time at oldies nights as long as the dj has some enthusiasm for what hes playing like sean chapman but what really gets me isrnb and uptempo northern with the odd beautiful mid tempo for a breather! some i know, some i can only dream of owning and others i dont know so give me des and ted !! dean
  5. While i agree with your comment about youngsters and alcohol today...i was having this conversation with fellow dj john stapleton who plays on many different scenes and i think this IS a specific problem to THIS scene as neither of us had come across other scenes or clubs which banned drinks on the dancefloor?...was chatting with bouncers at stafford reunion and they were shocked there were no drinks because every other night in that club the dancfloor would be soaked by 2am... dean
  6. ah just found a post pauline matthews first white BRITISH act problem solved..dont think nicci mentioned that
  7. this was a question at niccis pub quiz last nite, she asked me when she got home and i said possibly chris clark was earliest i knew after R dean taylor and teena marie..apparently the quiz bloke said kiki dee?...but gave her real name just googled it and got posts for r dean taylor ,teena, nick and the jaguars, rare earth and the valadiers but no mention of kiki.. what do you lot reckon? dean
  8. at go go children in bristol we are in the process of collecting email adds and names for a membership scheme although not because we have had trouble but due to too many people, we have been in a situation where there was no where to put your drink!...because of this we are also haveing admission deadline of about 12 unless we have already been told of a members late coming... this will not be rigid...members may bring guests and if some obvious soul fans turn up not having membership as long as its not rammed they will be let in...most of those who may cause problems come late, only come the once so wont bother joining and 'sorry mate, members only' is a good way of refusing them entrance without them getting in a piss cos we dont like the look of them....i dont think violence is the answer as that is a bigger way to finish a nite off than a few spilt drinks i dont think alcohol free nights will work at all...remember back in the day alcohol wasnt wanted/needed cos there were so many (not all!) who were speeding!...not so now as i said for us its down to numbers, most people either not 'on the scene' or new to it have been polite when told about drinks...we had 90 in last month and no spilt drinks but the month before with 140 in there was... as yet we havnt had a doorman but we are now in the process of sorting one out too...this may ofcourse see the adm go up but at the moment we only charge £3 so have room to move with that...we just have to hope the landlord doesnt mind fewer drinkers!! dean

  13. not sure about the clothes! but each to his own still...as far as the rest goes im with ya dean
  14. my first would have been 3 of my dads little queenie, shotgun and youre not an ordinary girl...it would have been about 73 and i was 6 and obviously had never heard of northern soul but i knew i loved these tunes even though the name bill blacks combo sounded shit !! the first knowing it was northern would be about 78 aged 11...youre ready now at the school/youth club discos...before i bought hey little way out girl on grapevine ..early memories from my brothers 500 box which i can remember looked HUGE next to my 25..would have been interplay, sliced tomatoes, cos you're mine,6x6 al records i can still remember playing back then dean
  15. at the end of the day the states is well...just a bit bigger than the uk!...back in the day here people would travel from all over the uk to a handful of allnighters so it was easy for a tune to suddenly become known everywhere within weeks...a bit harder to break tunes now because although there are more nights on they are 'normally' to a more local crowd or a crowd that already know what they like and what they are gonna get... not surprised ljblanken get requests for aretha etc.... in 'pub' gigs most people over here who are not on the northern scene also only know these type of trax.. dean
  16. but sometimes maybe this high price puts people off bidding and you can still get abargain...i got lula reeds walk on by me in mint cond (books at 85)and donald jenkins ive settled down(books at 100) suppose to be vg++ but was better for less than the postage price cos no one bid...so the total was still well under half book price..and two great tunes dean
  17. the answer IMO to the original question is yes...ofcourse there are some collectors who are more interested in the collecting than the music on the record....while this is a million miles from my point of view i am not shocked by it.... humans collect whether it be toys, medals, rocks, stamps, postcards etc....do you honestly think collecters of theses other things actually like every piece in their collections? im sure some have things only because of their rarity...i mean most of these other things you can only look at anyway,,,record collectors get to look and hear and dance!!...but only if they want to and thats upto them those who collect only expensive records....well maybe thats why they can!...why not ? if they are happy with owning the other tracks on cd....just like an art collector only having priceless pieces i suppose.... i reckon anyway...each to their own dean
  18. me too... and IMHO its not played out enuff!.....lovin 'you say' too again at the moment dean
  19. "Some youngsters will inevitably try to create their own scene from the ideals of the mod and northern scenes...GoGo Children, ".....cheers mace if youre calling us at go go children youngsters!...im 45 in a couple of months and im the baby by a good few years!..... maybe ive misunderstood and you mean the youngsters in a go go crowd...as with all big city soul nights we do get some youngsters who are getting to know the tunes ,some coming out of hip hop, breakbeat and funk scenes or influenenced by the mod/two tone eras...but i agree at the moment they do not travel...hopefully in the future enough will!...they dont seem to mind dancin side by side with oldies, infact most after the intial shock are i believe impressed....our venue is also above a pub,has lots of djs/bands of various genres and is not the normal sports hall type... i came on the scene through the 80s scooter scene and like you in the 70s wasnt bothered by the travelling... dean
