  1. used to often get asked for oasis at an indie nite i done by pissed students...while it was on the decks playing! opposite to that its great when someone asks for a tune and its lined up on the deck next...love to see their face light up...must be on the same wave lengh worst one i reckon is when they ask for something you havnt got..normally always oldies such as frank wilson or the snake etc....and their next question is 'what HAVE you got then?'...er 200 singles, want me to name em all?! another reggae story..playing liquidator in bristol not long after moving down here in a late pub i was resident at...bloke walk up to the decks with a bristol rovers hat on telling me to take it off cos it was shit...no its not, people are dancin...its shit take it off...no mate...then he rips the needle off the record...obviously the whole pub turns to look at me...what the bloke didnt realise was the landlord was standing behind him...within 30 secs his arm was up his back, face against the door, the other door open, out on the floor and door shut...see ya!..turns out bristol city were playing that tune a lot at ashton gate..which reminds me... back in norwich at a reggae venue we were doin we were getting a good rep with the 'blacks' from ipswich...i was getting tunes straight from jamaica...now norwich has no real black community like ipswich as such and you can get a lot of racist people at reggae nites believe it or not add to that norwich and ipswich fans hate each other...anyway..one night it was rammed maybe 120 people with at least 15 from ipswich..i was just thinkin how good it had been that we had got to the last tune with no trouble...all of a sudden it kicked off and a bottle came flying towards me hit the decks (which were at chest height)...missed the record and needle but smashed into pieces...missed me but hit the landlord who was standing next to me ready to turn the lights on.. just under the eye giving him 6 stitches...another venue gone we thought but he was ok about it....he did a runner a few months later with all the money oweing loads! dean

  3. can remember djing at a reggae 'blues'..all night house party with bar for those not into reggae!.....the house was heaving...all of a sudden its pitch black and the music goes off.....no ones put any money in the meter...while people are searching for the meter in the dark and 50p...theres a bang on the door..someone peeps out the window and theres a riot van with old bill on the doorstep...everyone goes quite..except for the giggling ...another bang on the door...old bill looking in the windows everyone getting down on the floor.....as soon as they left...they found the meter...50p in and off we go again till the mornin can also remember supplying a sound for a rave in the middle of norfolk...in some kind of barn with netting...could feel lumps on the floor and thought it was grass...as the sun came up we realised it was dead pheasents! did a wedding once for a friend..again when workin with a reggae sound....we had reservations but he said it would be fine...obviously not!...the look on the grannies faces when they walked in to see 18in bass bins!....after a while people gettin bored with even the most commercial of reggae, someone comes up with a ktel rock n roll double lp so my mate is playing tracks of this while the 'oldies' were jiving..all night the sound has kept going off as they had a noise limiter worked by a mic over the bar....even the noise of people laughing was making the warning light flicker...so a pissed up punter said he would sort it....climbed on the bar and ripped the mic out of the wall....and that was the end of the night..landlady went mental...a double wedding too..both brides crying...only 10pm... all a bit tame and well behaved nowadays! dean

  5. agree....something i can understand...but maybe thats why some djs look so bored!!
  6. YEP!...when i played for a reggae sound it was only me who 'selectered'...would do 3 hours in a pub backroom and then sometime allnight at a house party...without any helpers just loads of weed!...was a lot youger then though...but even a few years back was playing reggae in bristol 'late' pubs for 6 hour stints.. getting back on topic....at go go children we give the earlier guest 2 half hour slots.. no fun doing first hour if its a slow start... also gives them a chance to get used to the equipment and maybe calm there nerves if they dont dj much or are new to it....then the main guests gets an hour always prime time...residents 2x 3/4 hour sets...best way to fit 4 djs into 5 hours...seems to work, keeping it fresh and different styles of djing or genre.... dont like the idea of two hour sets at all...a long time to wait if the you not into the dj!....i suppose it wouldnt matter so much if it was a nite that just played northern but if you have people waitin for a bit of rnb or latin theyre gonna get bored with 2 hours of waitin.. and then if djs get 2 hours there would be less djs on each night so even harder for all those djs on the other thread you wanna hear get a go and if will sort out those who can dj and those who cant that surely means there will be a lot of shit nights where the dj isnt up to it doesnt it? IMO dean
  7. cheers flynny we do our best!...as a dancer when im out i know how frustrating it can be when youre cut off mid flow with a complete different style or tempo...didnt get time to play either of the tunes i got off you recently..next time...although the fento robinson was already one of johns plays so thought he was gonna spin it dean

  12. sam and dave again for me soul wise.....but tops would be bob marley mid 70s...a friend saw him crystal palace 79 and was the closest thing to a spiritual experience hes ever had...and hes not religeous dean

  14. i know ill get slated cos i have when ive put this on similiar threads....just loving you-ruby andrews... yep i know its a' well made soulful tune and she has a great voice' but that could be thousands of other records.... to me its.. just ok...im bored with it when i hear it out but its always only been ok.. to me its overated because it has none of the excitement some of the other maybe overplayed tunes already mentioned...or a melody that gives you goosebumps...but it still fills a floor...and i cant see why dean

  24. oh...the tempests 'someday' should also be on my list but being an lp wasnt in my pile of 7s used to do the list...a short song made shortned by a too enthusiastic young go go regular running to the decks and not stopping in time....'what the the f++++ this?'...er,finished!
  25. and shares the same lyrics as pat kellys reggae classic 'talk about love'....maybe coinsicidence but cant help thinkin marley may have heard keith barrows 'everythings gonna be alright' too..not just the lyrics but the hammond organ behind has a feel like marleys live gospelish version of no woman no cry...well known fact jamaican producers travelled to the states and brought back 45s to 'adapt' a few reminded me of early 70s stax stuff too...faves for me so far....roscoe robinsons theres a creator...great vocals and keys and then that sax comes in from no where!....dorothy norwood'gotta be sunshine'...brooklyn allstars top version of in the ghetto...and one defo for today driving round the sw...hopson familys 'hello sunshine' !! dean
