right heres me tuppence worth.... to answer the question... i think (and hope) on the whole its more 'this is a great record please give it a listen' as opposed to 'f*** you i like it'.... when there are problems i dont think its as black and white as some on here say....do people really book modern djs for mainly 60s clubs?...if so then yeah thats plain stupid and the promoter AND dj are wrong but if its a case of a dj playing some lesser known 60s stuff at that club and an oldies fan comin up and barkin play sumfin we know stop playin for yourself then i think the oldies fan should just chill and wait for the residents...as has been said its their job to on the whole play the 'norm' that has made the 'moanin' punter go there as he obviously wasnt going for the guest....unless he didnt know what the guest played in which case surely its his fault to? so while i agree a promoter should ask guests who he believes will fit into his/her club i also believe you shouldnt just get guests who will play the same as the residents...unless its a specific oldies, rnb club or whatever... we play a mix of 60s rnb, northern and funky edged both oldies and lesser known and always with something new but our punters and guests know that...some guests at our club have worked better than others but at least they are all slightly different and not so far out there that some of the people at least havent enjoyed them....maybe we're just lucky...but then again weve never and will never book a modern or 70s soul dj..now i suppose i should duck for writing that last paragraph but i think it was relevant dean

roscoe robinson is a killer!...love when that guitar riff kicks in second verse...someone buy it!!... should be played out more IMHO dean

great tune...took it out of my playbox to give it a rest a month or so ago and the first gig i did after i had a request for it!...back in for last saturday dean
-
i think most of us take between 1-200 tracks so more than enuff choice..ive never taken less then a 50 box for the smallest set at a charity/birthday gig with lots of djs...like someone else said dont make your set up before hand...have an idea but be prepared with a plan b if your chosen have been played or the crowds into sumfin else!..most of all enjoy!

and djs cant turn up late do one set ,get their dosh and clear off!

cheers eddie...maybe next time, hope youre feeling better soon dean -
with the risk of being slagged off for pluggin my nite again....we did half hour sets on saturday...yes you havnt got so much time to mix from one genre or tempo to the other and i like dancin to sets that flow myself.. but it did seem to work...the reason we did it was because we had groups in our crowd that liked the funkier stuff..others that wanted rnb and others that just wanted some oldies and sometimes an hour can be a long time to wait if youre not into it all as a list half hour sets might not look so good but without being there i think its hard to tell as you cant see what the dancefloor was like at any one time....if a tune empties the floor a sudden change maybe needed when time is short a dj may also have requests to fit in....good mic. chat or use of the mixer with tunes with good intros may make a change in style or tempo better on the night than it looks ...if you know what i mean?? also think you need to have your playbox in somekind of order! IMO dean

cheers mate will see you there!....BUT... spoke to them two days ago and was told 'the computer says' it was fine to wait till january...then ive just had a letter through asking for the balance immediattely!! so ive just rang then again spoke to a different woman and it seems the normal booking for pontins would be due in january which is why i was told by the woman,or the computer, two days ago it was fine BUT the organisers want the money in early...so it does have to be paid up NOW so ive just paid the outstanding ammount and would advise everyone to ...surely rather than leaving it to letters in the post the organisers should be starting threads on forums ...not the punters??? dean

60S Soho Soul Clubs ,southern Soul Era
Spacehopper replied to Sceneman's topic in All About the SOUL
when did the flamingo open?...my parents would go down from norwich to it but as my mum would have been pregnant with my older brother in about 61/62 they would have been just before the mod /soul scene...they were more into modern jazz then although the soul came later in the early 70s when we were both older enuff to leave with babysitters and they would go to the us air bases around norfolk... back in the 50s as teens they would also get their clothes in london much to the envy of others in norwich, apparently she and her friends were the first to have a-line skirts in norwich?....but also had a lot of trouble hanging around with black americans though..dad had to carry a flick knife for fear of being jumped by 'white' gangs and mum was often called a n+++++ lover...even though she never went with a black man her best friend and sister did...infact it would be her best friends daughter who would later babysit us....my aunt married and moved to the states and sadly we lost touch in the late 70s...especially as far as having a contact for records!!... -
