Gogo Children Bristol Mar 2Nd
Spacehopper replied to Spacehopper's topic in Event Playlists - Reviews
yes mate heard good things about empty bottles and our last venue would have been even more like EB as it should only hold 70 ...great atmoshere but we out grew it with anything upto 140 crammed in there...no room to dance and a health and safety nightmare for the owners! our venue now is so much better...different vibe but better..we are tucked out the way so dont get any passers by as we did before being on one of the main tracks into town...so numbers down a bit but all there for the night i believe kev highams up there saturday....was at gogo on saturday and our guest last month...top bloke with some awesome records...enjoy..i know you will!! dean -
Gogo Children Bristol Mar 2Nd
Spacehopper replied to Spacehopper's topic in Event Playlists - Reviews
cheers martyn..seen from your posts on threads we have similiar tastes....often wish we were a little bit more north!! if the reaction of our guests is anything to go by im sure we'd be rammed...although half of the crowd are bristolians who are not just on the soul scene but get it and are well behaved and enthusiastic which adds to the atmosphere and makes it a bit different...bristols never been a big 'soul' city but its always been a big music/clubbing city dean -

Eddie Holmen I Surrender-R And B Version Whats Ur Thoughts ?
Spacehopper replied to a topic in All About the SOUL
love that version...been talked about on here before one of those never forget moments when i heard it out first....ran to the decks to see a carver ...dj told me it was unreleased and off a cd....naughty sweet memories is the lp..still get it sealed for a tenner if you look dean -
....ha ha maybe...but personally i dont go so far as say local or nationa lu.s release,to me theyre both originals..or (im not a uk expert) but oriole or stateside?..both would be fine to me as they were both 60s releases...its the ones that were released in the early 70s etc that are reissues to me like these uk ones or the multi couloured ann sexton mentioned in another thread...to me legit reissue dean
-
i suppose thats why i could never be a salesman!...or be rich ...i tell it like it is...i might not put 'low' though, just down on last month...and to be honest even on the nights when the numbers are down a bit we always have a good night... i appreciate everyone who comes to our night especially those that travel with so many things to choose from...and yes maybe it might put some people off but its not just about numbers is it...most people will know our guests and can see our playlists
-
fair play to you but to be honest i dont think you would have got to much grief even on here for playing cds at a free pub gig...but thats another 4 page thread! ... i cant see the point in bullshittin about numbers etc....if you know people who were there and theyre on here reading it theyre gonna think youre a bit of a twat...i always put correct numbers up..we average about 100 normally a bit over...sadly this month theres so much on im pretty sure numbers will be down but we will still have a good night and the music will be tops with the guests we have...and if numbers are down thats what i will be saying on the write up sunday dean

This Was The First Tune I Ever Heard In Mr M's (Feb 1976....)
Spacehopper replied to a topic in Look At Your Box
got an ok version of sea cruise by rico on two tone ...the specials trombonists for those who dont do reggae/ska.. love little queenie...said on here before, first 'northern' tune i heard...playing my dads copy when i was about 5 or 6..was the days of slade and alvin stardust etc and i can still remember watching the record going round and thinking the name 'bill blacks combo' sounds shit but i loved the tune dean -
..despite being the first uk release....i would say not original as has been said its been released previous on mini lp..well 7" ep in the u.s
-
i mainly use manship and popsike....manships is normally top price so maybe 2/3rds of that would be average? obviously depending on condition and whether its off a dealer/auction or out of a box on a night out!... popsike is good as it has the dates of the sale so you can see how prices have changed but it is just auctions...as with any auction the price could be cheap but if two people have more money than sense could be way over the top too be honest it just comes with too many hours on a pc and a big wants...after a while you get too know if something is too expensive for you..and thats all that counts

as a promoter...where facebook wins is that you can become 'friends' with your potential punters and also add them to your group so when you do an event you invite all your friends/group members...and everytime you post a message or reminder of the forthcoming gig they get a notification of it rather than posting an event an hoping people go on the event section and see it... if your group/page is open all of their friends can see it too if they post comments...seems to be a lot more posting of possible plays from you tube etc and previous photos all acessable on the same page we get between 20 and 50 confirmed 'guests' when we do an event and get an average crowd of 100....dont think weve ever had more than 6 confirmed on ss will still continue to use it though! dean
-
always take flyers with me and never been refused...always ask first at new venues i may not go to regular...i always also let other people leave flyers at our nights...although not if they clash as i wouldnt others its etiquette and respect! its the same with facebook...i dont mind people advertising there events on our group page but i had to message one big promoter about doing it for his gigs that were on the same nights as us!..not on really dean

maybe those non soulies are a little self concious about how to dance to northern!....ska is basically jumping around or hopping from one lag to another....slower funk and rnb are both a lot easier to dance to for those not so experienced with northern and its quicker beat and breaks.. dean

Weekly Poll - When Did Your Northern Soul Affair Start?
Spacehopper replied to Mike's topic in All About the SOUL
bought hey little way out girl on grapevine in 78 aged 11...but had played my older brothers records a year or so before that but had played my dads motown 7s and little queenie in 73 when i was 5...then was dormant through my two tone/punk years loved it in the early/mid 80s after leaving school getting a scooter and then suddenly hearing all those tunes again i knew my brother had in a big box under his bed...i had the best northern cassettes in our scooter club... about 89/90 got out of scooters and started djing reggae with a sound system in norwich...always kept my northern..even bought a bit of modern in mid 90s for the sound and then after moving to bristol in 95...about10 years back got another scooter and started sneakin a few northern into my djing in pubs etc and for about the last 8 years been out soulin almost every weekend with very few reggae dj gigs dean -

as a pre and post event poster i agree its a shame there isnt more activity BUT dont think for one minute just because there isnt much post event action on here that the events advertised are not busy....i believe there was 300 at gloucester allnighter on saturday and only 4 or 5 posts....ive said it before djs post on here, promoters and sellers post on here, collecters and people who who used to go out post on here...the majority of people who go out week in and week out in my experience do not... if you wanna know what a nite is like....GO! dean

Weekly Poll: Northern Exposure In The Mainstream?
Spacehopper replied to Mike's topic in All About the SOUL
good if you like handbagger nights !! ... no seriously as far as the original question goes i think any exposure is good..whether new blood thinks whats that? sounds good..where can i hear that played?....or if it reminds an oldie to start living his life again while he still can, ironically away from the tv! thought the question was about the scene as opposed to good for the artists...if the scene is healthy is stands to reason its gotta be good for those who can still sing or those few who may actually have the rights to songs being reissued...although i dont think many singers/musicians will have any rights to songs exept those BIG one such as womack, mayfield etc dont think covering up has ever stopped artists making money or has anything to do with the original question IMO....especially years after the track was recorded and the artists got there few dollars to eat that week in a lot of cases! sure weve been here before...once or twice dean -
did you get that off here mate?...was a cheap one i just missed last weekend....seller had a few i wanted well under prices but missed em all
