have to agree with geeselad the dance scene was and still is very much like the northern scene ..maybe you dont like the music and the dancing isnt as good but even if you dont include the drugs...workin all week to dance all weekend?...most if not all of your friends are into that scene? gettin excited about the new tune or the best djs ? travelling to events not just in you home town clubs? ..all sounds a bit familiar to me! and most of those into it dont have to be off their heads to like the music.like us they listen to it all week...trust me bristol was and still is into it MASSIVE dean -
should be one on the way..hopefully in time for going to a happening in weston on saturday night ;-)

regardin big skirts..depends where you go...oldies event at kings hall, blackpool etc there are dozens..rare rooms etc hardly any, packed 100 club last weekend and i dont think i saw one..lots of slim modette looking types which is a lot better look and even though its an older look its not so dated and so 'cooler' to the young -
Poll: Bbc Culture Show - Northern Soul - Your Take ?

gave it a 3 and has been said already nothing more than i expected..mentioned the wheel..15 mins of wigan then nothing happened till the oldies revived it and now a couple of kids up north are doing it...well thats how a non soulies would see it! we all know its different..i know it was only 30 mins but a bit less wigan and could have mentioned the nighters that DID carry it on after station rd....and then the massive influx of those too young for wigan who discovered it and carried it on in the mid to late 80s via the mod revival/scooter scene..i can remember seeing edwin starr live in 84 along with 5000 other teenagers!....and then all the new unreleased discoveries kent are still finding...34 years of nighters in the famous london 100 club on oxford street...djs still finding records even today not just in the 70s (kindly shepherds,jt parker) etc etc...all the different genres of 'soul' now being played...the only funky tune they played was 'the bottle' which non funk loving oldies fans dance too? but was a good promotion for the film and book..most of the stills and interviews seemed to be lifted from the book...elaines contacts i suppose some of the dancing and all of the fashion was a bit embarressing though pauls enthusiasm?...more like fond memories i feel if it was enthusiasm surely he would have been out in the last 30 years before making this show? dean -
ha ha!..i have a few 70s mate..possible spin at gogo..we didn't play any funky edged stuff a few years back...cant stand still and get boring but will always be mainly uptempo 60s of one kind or another..got the mel and tim on cd and just love it..and I occasionally get a guest slot here and there! ;-)

am I right in thinking its the 50th of the first wheel alnighter this weekend? thing is with wigan it seems to be done so much by so many people with numerous films, dox and books I never went, way too young being 14 when it closed and 250 miles away!...don't get me wrong, wish I had.. I know I would have loved it BUT oddly theres a part of me that is also glad I didn't cos I probably wont shut the f+++ up about it!! dean

can paypal immediately... for the right price!..doesn't have to be mint just a vg++ player cheers dean
-
to be honest when ive been seeing this wigans 40th blah blah on nites ive often thought how is that anything different to what they normally do anyway as most have been largely oldies nites playing tunes from that era already...exept maybe playing tunes they would normally be too embarressed to play nowadays? dean

BBC2 Culture Show - Northern Soul Tonite Wed 25th Sept 2013
Spacehopper commented on Mike's article in News Archives
been discussed on other threads..will be watching if i remember but the cynic in me says it will be the same old same old...got a few dvds with various programmes from tv over the years and they basically all say the same with different faces..same clips from this england and based mainly on the wigan years...seen a couple of clips on facebook and was good seeing them chat to the youngsters...would like to see more of todays scene that doesnt involve oldies nights at kings hall to be honest...i know its the biggest night etc so tv companies are only interested in that but ive seen it a few times now!...still can live in hope dean -

Culture Show Wednesday 25Th Sept Ns:keeping The Faith
Spacehopper replied to Haydn's topic in All About the SOUL
ofcourse there will be some of that its human nature...but i dont personally care if youre a dj,promoter or youve only just discovered it i treat you all the same...and ive been treated the same since before people on the scene knew i dj'd/promoted and after i honestly dont think the people i know and have become friends with give a shit if i do or dont.. but thats just my opinion and experience...i suppose being a returnee 10 years back but living 230 miles away from where i did last time means i have no history with most of those i see out...and im too old to start any rivalries now!..if i dont gel with someone they dont become my friend and we can be in the same room without attitude ive seen and felt falseness in reggae and dance music scenes..the soul scene isnt the same for me dean -

Spacehopper replied to Haydn's topic in All About the SOUL
and thats the paradox....because we are all so passionate theres argueing, rivalries, history, politics and allsorts but when we all get out 99% are there to have a good time and are polite and trouble, considering how many are out every weekend, is rarer than some of the records!...and the genuine 'freindship amoung strangers' is something ive never experienced as much in other scenes -

seen the clips and agree good to see the clips of the youngsters...and being youngsters i suppose they would wanna get into it all...the fashion etc have a few younger regulars (but not teens) who have recently got into it at our night and they have the new range of fred perry with torch patches, baggy strides etc..makes me smile but i dont take the piss..its all new to them and i can remember the buzz of that..as for oldies doing it..as with the 50 year old skins/mods at scooter rally in air wair and combats or parkas covered in patches that only just fit..not a good look as for the tv companies its the same when they film scooter rallies..still think its all about mods and rockers and only wanna film comedy mods with scooters full of mirros and lights over a soundtrack of my generation..lot more to scooterists than that looking forward to the film though...sure it will be good...enjoying the book but to be honest as yet not read much i havnt read before in others already dean -

did make me wonder too...luckily for us new comers in bristol dance to allsorts..saying that glad you had a good night though -
it does seem to be drying up a bit..maybe after all the pages discussing seans rugby sets some are a bit afraid of theirs being scrutinised so deeply maybe some are scared it will be revealed to look the same every time most probably just don't have the time I always scribble mine down in a book when I get home..started because of doing a monthly night and can never remember what id played and while maybe a third are faves that get played a lot I wanted to make sure I changed it up a bit and played first time spins almost always put mine on here..certainly not dick swinging about rarites! or keeping any of mine to myself most are known by ss members anyway!....while I agree its hard to say how a list went down if you were not there I hope it does show potential gogoers what we do and play would like to see more dean
