echoes is the only music mag i use to buy in the 80/90s but to be honest it was more for the reggae than soul...ive stopped buying scootering mag since it was taken over by a major media group as it just got boring and full of the same old adverts every month so if most music mags are the same im not surprised..and ofcourse most mags have websites/facebook pages which we can now read on the go on phones actually whenever i went on a train/plane journey i would get mojo which always seemed to have a good selection of quality music in it but couple weeks back couldnt find it so dont know if its finished? forums?..well if they are as heated as this one can get im not surprised either...while i enjoy ss and its very busy...there are many more soul fans out there who wont come on for fear of been ridiculed or abused!.. dean

Hi Russ..i think the problem with getting travellers would be finding a weekend when there isnt already something local to them?...so many nighters weekends on already with money being tight for a lot takes a long time to get to the south coast, a couple of hours from bristol to southampton and its relatively close compared to those up north...so not sure if fridays would take off for the travellers as its a work day for most saying that id support it mate if possible so good luck if you do it but probably best to get all the locals working together first ,in my opinion atb dean

mona lisa is too cheap!!! someone buy it..killer!

we have probably more non soulies than a lot of clubs..certainly in the south west and events I travel to further afield anyway.. agree a nice welcome goes a long way and we try to be that way whoever you are and however long you've been into this music.. when we notice first timers we always ASK them not to take there drinks on the dancefloor (incase they don't see all the signs!) and if we get requests for stuff that's isn't gonna get played there is a polite was of telling them..it seems to work..they have a good time, maybe start getting into the real deal and come back ive spoke to some and it can be a bit intimidating almost when its obvious to them and every one else they are the only ones who don't know other people..know the tunes..know how to dance even when we get the odd twat whos having a good time but showing off to his mates and being slightly annoying the softly approach of asking his mates to have a word normally works better than going over all bouncer like...but if needed that's plan b ;-) I suppose its just cos we want everybody to just get on and enjoy it..life is really too short not to...or maybe nicci, john and myself are just old hippies at heart dean

lol...again cross wires..my original post had been quoted by ernie andrews i think not by you..and i was confused by his post quoting me as i hadnt mentioned condition red and whether it was soul or not... as for instrumentals..again i didnt mean versions of soul tunes in the early years i meant shit like joe 90 etc that i thought came a few years after the original term 'northern' had been used but was still classed as northern....using it to show how over the years northern has meant so many more different genres of dance music..which if i remember right was what the thread was originally about..the inclusion of rnb think we should leave it there rather than go round in circles hijacking the thread with confusion dean
-
I understand that pete but was confused as to why my post was quoted that's all?...I mentioned the term northern soul meaning mid tempo 60s soul when it was first coined and don't think dave godin had the 'crap' instrumentals in mind..if indeed that many were being played in what 73 was it?....my point was over the next few years 'northern' did include allsorts of stuff that wasn't soul by the way I like condition red..nostalgic reasons ,big on the scooter scene in the mid 80s when I was a teen..not sure if id wanna hear it out too much though
-
confused?..i didnt
-
unlucky that time mate but made up for it more recently with the one on the florida website was it ? see you at lifeline atb dean
-
ah but these have been played at past northern soul events so are allowed by those who winge about rnb tracks they dont know being played today
-
shouldnt get involved but cant help myself....been some very 'passionate' arguements about latin being played at kh, a 'northern soul allnighter' on facebook this week already northern soul...as we all know originally used to desrcibe uptempo mid 60s soul..but as the years went by included rnb,funky,70s,blue eyed pop,tv themes, latin and all sorts..thats how i see it..so while the drum beat to rnb is slightly different to that of mid 60s uptempo soul it can still be called northern if benny troy or franky and johnny or carstairs is IMO but some rnb can be too 'rocky' as in rock n roll or dr feelgood....the same way some 70s can be too disco its odd ive had northern soul lovers complain about rnb but dance to charles sheffield or big daddy rogers jt parker cleared the floor round here 5 years back but now fills it despite this most opposition still seems to come from oldies fans who have forgotten the original ethos of including diffrent 'soulful' sub genres which THEY use to have when they were younger and more open minded i reckon anyway dean

Do You Ever Think "this Should Be Worth More"?
Spacehopper replied to Ljblanken's topic in All About the SOUL
remember getting a cd when i first started getting back into it...had candy in the sand,im a big man,you said etc all expensive records..but one i loved as much as those was bob brady-love is the master..and it was a fiver! ..i know its nowhere near as rare as those ive mentioned but you dont see it as much as most of his others which are more expensive? dean -
if youre on facebook its been posted by loads of people, should be able to find it
-
maybe take a break if you feel the need but id keep the tunes until you are REALLY sure!! it can be frustrating with peoples blinkered view of what THEY think should be played which is basically the same stuff week in week out..been reading some posts on fb about KH and a dj getting a slating for daring to play a little bit of latin, rnb and stuff people didnt know!...'stuff you didnt know'? now im sure there was a time when that was the whole point!! atb dean

there you go!..and just in case you dont know..styrene,stuck on label..vinyl moulded in label

Poll: Bbc Culture Show - Northern Soul - Your Take ?

i agree with sootys post about sean and i think it probably happened to a lot of us...i personally had a gap of about 20 years while out djing reggae...got back into it and for the first few years was into all those oldies id completely forgot about..another 7 years down the line and while i like underplayed oldies im bored shitless with the same old 100...wish it was 500!!...and im loving hearing new tunes every week when im out and at home..missed all the rnb and funky stuff first time around thing is most of those who dress up are still into those 100..they seem to be the ones who dont move on and thats upto them at the end of the day i suppose but..as far as being welcome i do still got to nights where the majority are into oldies and if a dj tries to be different i HAVE heard and seen BAD attitudes towards him but the rarer crowd tend to just stand around and chat to themselves when a dj is boring TO THEM...ive never seen them make baggies feel unwelcome despite the posts on soulsource its odd how the rare crowd seem to be thought of as soul snobs when i think its the obvious oldies crowd who tend to be more snobbish as to what can be played and whats traditional northern soul had a guy just returned on the scene at a do..used to go to the cat..doesnt dance, doesnt go anywhere but seems to think he can have a go at djs on fb who try something different...i even played half a dozen cats tunes at the last one but he still said there wasnt enough tradtional northern soul ?...plenty of rare lovers too but none had a go at the same old tunes that were played? dean -
lol...before my time on hold so youre not the only one
