C4 Paul Mason Asks - Will Northern Soul The Movie Spark A
Spacehopper replied to Mike's topic in All About the SOUL
was only on for one night in Bristol...now two different cinemas one doing a week run and some shows already sold out! agree though its not gonna spark a big new youth cult like quad and especially the fashions!...they have far too much choice now and most of the people who watch it will be oldies anyway -
danny white is a steal!!!

thought someone would pick up on this one so almost didn't include it ..but kinda proves the point that sadly djs might not play a cheap quality tune until someone like butch does and the price and demand goes crazy I was lucky enough to stumble on it on ebay about 4 years back and got it for 15 been stomping around the music room this morning to loads of under 25s from the shelves including a few on your lists..syl Johnson, esquires, little tommy, jimmy hughes..think I might start keeping to under 25s for my first gogo sets dean
-

volumes is cheap! 'right road' is a great tune!

yeah 75 lowest ever..we also get maybe 40 from around Bristol who are not on the soul scene..this particular night aswell as various soul events was also the st pauls carnival..a once a year thing with reggae sound systems and free parties all night! I think though, obviously depending on the venue it doesn't have to be about filling a hall to the rafters or even BIG halls..its about getting the right size for your event and creating an atmosphere...soul function for instance is in a small hall but perfectly sized for the crowd that go there, only about 75 but that's enough and 75 top people too!..i believe there are enough events on as I have said but good luck with your venture I hope maybe to come along ..so long as it doesn't clash as there are still events ive not managed to get to yet already! atb dean
-
with the risk of being accused of blatant self promotion I will answer your question anyway weve never had less than 75 in about 5 years every month and although weve had 200 the 75 night was brilliant! a nite that clashed with about 4 other nights I think never been as its on the same time as us but I believe different strokes in Manchester is also always busy and is a monthly night
-
I don't think so...KH second room, rugby second room, gloucester second room, different strokes, empty bottles, driving beat,soulfunktion,burnley,100 club,lifeline/pow wow, vava voom,rnb123,nowt but northern, seriously soulful and gogo in Bristol are all playing something different and although ive not been to them all as I understand it from peoples posts who I BELIEVE are all doing well they may not be sell outs or having the same numbers as the oldies only things but lets face it that's the point in being underground innit? and by that I mean the mainstream has never been cutting edge..whether its mainstream music in general or mainstream northern scene
-
well I didn't wanna go there with another oldies v newies debate mate hope you enjoyed your hols, see you soon
-
nites down in the sw are not sold out but are certainly busy enuff to get a good atmosphere, cant remember the last time I was at a night with under about 75,exept maybe the odd free pub do and are normally between 1-200 ..saying that when they do clash with either big nites further afield or other local things (which im glad to say isn't often) there is a noticeable difference and although we still have a good time it can sometimes be a bit of an anxious time for promoters so IMO there are enuff nites on already
-
.. yes mate seen that event on fb which is what made me look on the films page to see if its on down here in bris... soulboy was and there was an after/before party for that but the website for the cinema only shows listings upto the week before this films release .. so still don't know if it will be on the dvd or big screen for us atb dean
-
is there a list anywhere of cinemas showing it?..been on the fb page and just all about the 'weeker' events most of which are just soul nights advertised elsewhere already
-
our last two free cds given away at nites this year have been uploaded to mixcloud a few days ago by John and are number 7 and 9 in the northern soul chart..heres a link to one if you wondering what we do down here in Bristol..or just wanna hear some top tunes, hope you enjoy https://www.mixcloud.com/johnstapleton/go-go-children-mix-cd-18-compiled-by-dj-dean-and-john-stapleton-may-2014/ dean
-
YES PLEASE! stopped myself getting involved in that thread..been there done that!..my answer to mat would have been yes :-)..despite not getting the 'disco' weve still got more choice than ever! so....I cant understand why some northern oldies fans don't 'get' northern tunes that are discovered now but then don't get how they don't like some of the 60s funky edged stuff and soulful rnb but will dance to ohio players or Charles Sheffield!..but they come around, can also remember being one of a few on the floor for jt parker down here when it fills the floor... now im a bit bored with it ;-) and if I can pay a tenner for an unreleased legit killer..bring it on...not too much of a snob to put it in my playbox and shout out LISTEN TO THIS! HOW THE HELL DID IT NEVER GET RELEASED 40+ YEARS AGO!....Jackie days get to steppin for instance, maybe not quite as good as naughty boy but then its not as overplayed either! keep on doing what you've been doin dean
-
very sad news, get well soon..might take a lot of hard work and determination but if anyone has it im sure you do!
