  1. Hi Ian, a bit off topic but have you still got that swinging chair you had in Leeds about 1980
  2. So very true i was about 22 when the Mecca dropped the rare 60,s stuff. So alot of the Wigan regulars where 15/16 at the time, 6/7 years was a big age gap at the time. Now we are older 10/15 years dos,t seem a big differance. It is because a was a Mecca regular that i think a like 60,s to 00,s. P.S. I was in the Modern room at Stoke the other week, and at the Burnley all-nighter last Friday.
  3. I don,t know about Northern, but she goes to quite a few Modern dos, weekenders etc. She also went to the Tuscanny weekender last year. Thinking about it she could be into Northern as well, she was at the Tower weekender a year or two ago.
  4. All the class of 55 where 18 or nearly 18 when Wigan opened, and there are alot of us about. There were at least a dozen lads from Accrington alone older than me in the early days.
  5. Midweek do Levine on cira 74 near winter gardens if i remember
  6. Yes 79/80 great music being played but where were most of the crowd at the fri oldies night not sat. Not much changed there than. My best times music wise was the last 2/3 years.
  7. Bloody hell Andy, this post has hit me like a hammer, the age thing O well there,s still life in us yet as long as the music plays on Dave
  8. Ann Robinson might have sung World of Happyness after all
  9. The rivallry only lasted for just over 3 years. The Mecca opened over 2 years before the Casino, and the Mecca had stopped playing Northern by 1977. Lets not forget that lots of people (me included) went to both venues. My fav. was the Mecca because the music to me was light years ahead. The Highland Room 71 to the Powerhouse 08 (and everthing else in between)
  10. Sorry never got down to the Cats, but my 5 from Wigan are: The Sherrys Put yours around me This was the one when Wigan 1st opened. The Jades I,m where it,s at The record that made R S Yvonne Baker You didn,t say a word Never sounded better than at the Casino Lou Pride I,m coming home in the morning The title says it all The Group I don,t like to lose The record that made go back after the Gary Lewis etc years
  11. Yes I agree the atmosphere at the central was quite unique. Also a very shady feeling to the place, when you 1st went down the stairs. There was a do in the early 70,s in Blackburn on a Monday night run by Steve Ellison. Simply called the Underground, it was underneath a pub. I can,t remember the name, long since pulled down.
  12. The Thompson Centre got pulled down a few months back, it,s now a car park I never went, f....k knows way, but all my mates who went enjoyed it
  13. Have some great memories of Bank Hall, the soul nights, nighters and dayers great times. Also the 1st soul do Louise (my wife) went to, so very special to us, still together 23 years later. P. S. Pat turned up at the Burnley Nighter a few months back, we had a good chat to catch up.
  14. Cant remember any Searling or Levine connections but im sure there would have been at some time.
  15. Back in 73 when i first heard Lou Courtney to my ears it was Trying to find my walrus (not woman) I think i,ve spelt it right (big over sized seal with tusks)
  16. arte Mine was at the Legion Accrigton, spring 1974. I took over from Tommy Balmer who was moving away from Accrington. I was shitin it, anyway armed with a small box of singles, a few LPs and a shit load of emi,s got off Pete Lawson I got my debut under way. It went ok, but I didn,t use the mike. Within six mouths I became a OVO DJ, but thanks to Pete for helping me get started. I stopped DJing in the early 80,s went I sold my U S singles. As I have said before my sawnsong was at Bank Hall Miners.
  17. The walk from the bus station wasn,t much better, that old arcade could be well dodgey Especially in the early days Casino open 2.00am bus got in just after midnight.
  18. I listed my copy of Funky/ I,m got to be free, for £15 in 1980 ended up let it go for £8 I had a few copies with the Soul Meeting side used to knock em out at £4 each.
  19. Hi are you sure it was his 18th, in 1973 still played/covered as Moses Smith than. It was about March 74, before I found out what it was. Ron was and still is one of the great lads on the scene.
  20. I had a Ben Aiken again from Soul Bowl, folded in half by relef postman (xmas time). John sent me a replacement, but after Christmas I sat on a Wobat that i was meant to give to Martin Koppel for swaps!
  21. Only got to Whitchurch once, went on train. Less than a hour and half in the place to get the train home. f...k knows how many times we had to change! P.s. I still love Game Players.
  22. I was like you back in the day, went through the second hand/junk shops looking for records. Don,t know about paying a quid more like 5p/10p each. I did alot all traveling in my job so at dinner times check out the above shops. I had my fair share of finds. I can.t be arssed to look on car boots, think off loads off better things to do on a Sunday morning, more othen than not at a after party.
  23. We can all stand and make a big circle and watch.
  24. This could be total crap as well, but i got told that Paul Young did a cover of Mel Britt and Kylie coverd Tobi Legend. (late 80s early 90s ?) Anybody no if this is true or not. P.S. if true the versions are prob. total crap
