  1. Very sad news......whilst i didn't know Pete that well he always gave me a warm welcome at The Manifesto and if i asked for a request he would play it.
  2. One that sticks in my mind as a massive floor is the Queen Elizabeth Hall Oldham........if memory serves me it would give Bridlington a run for actual floor space, under the balcony Brid makes it look larger but for dance floor this one has to be up the there........ had a few good nighters there !!!
  3. Last time i saw one it was £100 which was a while back.......great almost forgotten Casino play which i'd never heard played out in an age,got a spin at Radcliffe in the main room after Nolan Porter had been on.
  4. Sad news.........great record he will always be remembered for but for me one that does'nt wear well from being overplayed, anyone like me just want to lock some records up and make everyone wait to hear them again, this would be one.
  5. Thanks for the replies lads ,i had a look on the walk about thing on google and see now where that is......i didn't remember the Rowntree's bit in the name though i must say.....as i was saying it all looks different to me now,i used to think it overlooked a grass square or park, may have done as there's a lot of new buildings. All you had to do as you'll know if you went was to watch for the mass exodus of bag carrying leather macked types heading out and you knew it was time for the train !!
  6. Anyone drop into a place called " Sounds " in Manchester before the last train to the Casino?? picking up at all those stations on the way, cassette players giving what volume they could , some dancing in the aisles..... ive only ever talked to one lad in recent years who knew it. I used to get off my train at Victoria and then over the town...what i can't remember is exactly where it was, thats long left me and Manchester changed to me as i'd not been there after about 1984 until about 10 years ago. Where was it ? ......to me i'd never known being able to go into a pub and hear Northern playing on a jukebox........at least my memory tells me it was a jukebox and not piped in.
  7. Myself i think it turned out way better than i feared ( dance floor action )mainly because of the very narrow angles and fast movement by the camera, you wouldn't believe the filming takes for say the opening door scenes alone, nine i think it was.....the continuity were sticklers and yet they wasted their time,Both Sammy and myself had to carry record boxes in and yet you never saw them ! I was the one trying to smuggle a bottle of newcastle brown ale in and i had to have a wallet with old fivers, pound and ten bob notes and paid the lass on the desk....again you didn't glimpse any of it , lots more filmed parts were never used. The dance floor scenes the Olympics were playing when it was actually Patti and the Emblems playing in those scenes and vice versa......Sammy and me sat down when we got into the club and while they set up etc i said to Sammy lets get the box's open there maybe some good tunes in there for us !!!! they were full of 45's........Cilla Black , Val Hooligan , Billy J Kramer , Frank Ifield etc etc ......needless to say we didn't keep any so don't bother asking if i'll sell you Paddy Mcginty's goat as i haven't got one..........honest ! One BBC lass between takes was responsible for setting a smoke machine away and then tucking behind a door out of the way,i couldn't see any smoke on the program, some of the cast had imitation cigarettes with smoke and again i didn't see any on screen,so i applaud the work that goes into these programs and the behind the scenes crew work bloody hard and get no recognition. Funniest part for me was filming the part where the lass sees the DJ on the balcony with her mate and runs out,the camera and sound man had to follow alongside her and folk who saw them heading toward them had to ensure they left them a track through the dance floor..........well a lad from Tyneside who attends That Beatin Rhythm was just coming up from a backdrop and the sound man tripped over him and went down ontop of him,he was a big bloke all your saw were his arms and feet under this hulk..... he was crushed !!
  8. My thoughts were the two lasses were only recruiting and knew nothing anyway Paul but its the BBC mate i should have known better lol Entertainment wise ive always thought this a good program and i'm sure even this episode will be as they always have worthy story lines but as i say the scene will rip it apart. Great to see you have the FED back next year by the way.
  9. As Rob says above if your going to watch it don't expect detail.........I accepted an invite to take part and as i like the program and have watched since it started i thought it a good idea so along with Sammy Dee who turned up we were the senior citizen's although i had thought i would not be alone as many of similar age were asked/put their names forward.Once at the venue it began to unfold that what research that had been done was scant to say the least as we pointed out the term Northern Soul had not been coined in that year and here's a massive banner behind the decks proclaiming it !!! just the tip of the iceberg of inaccuracies and young folk who would not calm down they will look more akin to punks jumping about!!! I did voice my concerns with all this with one of the crew who was second i think to the director but said his hands were tied as to what he could do and the director had final say and he wanted to go with it as planned. My parting shot to him,as i declined the offer of day two filming was "Folks who usually watch the show will tune in and no doubt enjoy it for the entertainment value but " fans of the scene will rip it to pieces" he seemed genuinely shocked and said " Really " along with others i signed a sheet and i remember legal tags not to discuss the program attached so maybe its best not to say anymore until after its shown because the BBC has pots of money to spend i may end up in court lol
  10. All been said i'm sure but felt i had to clear my throat as this has been stuck in it for a while.......Kev from around our way said it for me really and i do refer to my area. What i see/hear , or did as most i hardly ever attend now even though they are on the doorstep , is the same tunes played by the same folk , then you have the same crowd who only know what they have been played by the tune spinners wanting ,yes you guessed it the same tunes to dance to,some of these are new to the scene as in the last year or two.......they only know these songs because they, if honest are not into the scene for them its just a social night out where they can have a laugh and a dance, not forgetting a few drinks. So the perpetual wheel of boredom is set in motion..........the one saviour is that there is still a couple of local venues that do play across the board and include tunes you would never have a hope of hearing at the others mentioned and most definately not in original format , the aformentioned punters are notable in their absence even though location for one club is a matter of yards from the another.......sadly there is a ton of cheap boots of big money rare and even classic oldies there if you play boots and sadly thats never even picked up as the punters would be saying " errrrr whats this " and so there is no insentive to do that anyway and as drink is included you have a captive audience......we have often joked if there was a ventriloquist on most would still be there as drink is available ! How would i like to see it change ? use the many lads around the area who have collections, some very good.....make the punters listen and learn,if they don't like it then they should go and find a scene that suits......there is one person who regularly asks for disco music , its the wrong scene your in,don't try and change it go and find a disco scene somewhere ! throat cleared and it landed right on a disco record ! I do realise one or two may read this and think its a personal pop,its not but please feel free to discuss it face to face, maybe you haven't known how some of those who have been supporting you for years are feeling lately. Meanwhile some of the punters mentioned will have made their annual trip and for many the only one out of their local town/area to hear a weekend of repeats and will have danced to them every play.........my advice for there stick a cd multi-play on and press random believe me it will do a better job than many of the big names spinning......of course you need more than 50 or so tunes to begin with ! Funny footnote here and true.......Whilst going towards a local venue to support a mate of mine doing a set there, two lasses were out smoking, one said to the other " what was it like last month ?" the reply was " they didn't play much of that northern soul sh_te so it wasn't a bad night" well my wife and i looked at each other gobsmacked !
  11. One of my favourites and i'm still playing the same 45 my older brother bought when it came out and i was 10 years old sticking it on his Dansette.
  12. Title tells all...........P.M. me if you have one for sale. Thanks
  13. Now its gone it too must go down as one of "the nighters" Middleton............almost 12 hours sometimes the full 12 of top drawer music plus the upstairs and the R+B room down all that in the one building what more could you ask for............the casino gets many votes here but for shear quality of music amassed over all those years post casino i'd say Middleton every time........much missed ,cheers Andy !
  14. Someone no doubt beat me to it , more than once surely ? Well it goes like this " its got a spacious living room ! just right for etc etc..............is this selling houses ???? utter drivel imo
  15. Back to january 1975 , my 18th , i was told ( what a load of sh_te) that i'd never get in as i looked 10 when i was 18 lol so i waited until i was legit , had everything ready to prove etc........was i asked ? lol i was rammed , squashed , trammpled until i was through the doors and in....... i put it in the sleeve of my first driving licence and kept it pretty good i'm sure you agree.
  16. I know someone who was at Stoke for the filming, the right age for the film and who is still awaiting his expenses promised so if anyone from ipso facto i think it is are reading this " COUGH UP " the lad drove i would guess the neck end of thousand miles to help you out......do the right thing !!!!!
  17. A nice commercial one now.......one that just floats along for 25 seconds with no hint of whats to come then " Bang " it explodes Isley Brothers....Behind the painted smile.
  18. Highly regarded , love it or hate it ? Mitch Ryder......Breakout.....almost makes 30 seconds !
  19. Common as muck and only 22seconds but i defy anyone to say it does'nt hit em every time......Tony Clarke...Landslide ! Is this an echo ???????
  20. Common as muck and only 22seconds but i defy anyone to say it does'nt hit em every time......Tony Clarke...Landslide !
  21. HEAR THAT JOE!!! IV'E BEEN SAYING THAT FOR A FEW YEARS NOW, THATS ONE OF THE REASONS I PACKED IN A THRIVING SOUL NIGHT IN THE NORTH EAST.. MOST PUNTERS WANT THE SAME OLD, AND AS A PROMOTER/DJ, I GOT FED UP OF PLAYING THEM.. BOB... How do Bob....all the best to yourself and Theresa mate Well Bob all thats set to change next year up at Easington by the look mate.....ive held my hands up many a time in conversation as being guilty of the same thing as i mention but how much can some take before they ask " what am i missing?" I would ask all reading this to visit Easington miners welfare if possible , one of if not the best floor in the country " ask dancers such as Andy , Carl and the lads how true that is !! this coming year should see a whole new start as regards records played but without sacrificing the danceability factor and still leave room for some classic oldies ....get along if you can and open those lug holes !
  22. Merry Crimble Harry , Di I have a list from local soul nights but if i told you i'd annoy the promoters of em because the trouble i think is most are their particular favourites and they want to hear em and as they play the main parts of the evenings so thats when they are more evident too , i could pick a tune for most and some would know who it related to.....thats why i got on my bike so to speak and drove up to 300 miles round trips to soul nights !!!! To those i say look beyond the 50 or so records you always play/ hear ,maybe i'm being over generous saying 50 lol... there are more tunes out there....but your correct wherever you go theres always tunes heard all the time in a certain area at most soul nights......unavoidable ?? You do mine and i'll do yours are the main culprits in my opinion simply because in my experience whichever event you then go to the muisc is the same tunes in a different venue played by the same person the week before in another.....the reason for my boredom.
  23. Fortunate to hear Kenny spin it then the week after and an hours drive away hear it again from Kenny.......sadly may have to wait an age now to hear it again.....sounds like these ,awful in quality some would say have that magic for me and are right up my street !
