Which Northern Track You Dislike The Most
Joefromupnorth replied to MrsWoodsrules's topic in All About the SOUL
Said it before on similar threads........House for sale,i love cheese but not this variety. Most commercial records played as there is a shed load to play before placing one of them on a deck at a night in my opinion -
Myself ive stopped going to some local to me as it seemed that because of more and more attending who hadn't a clue the promoters were catering increasingly for them and forgetting who had been their core audience for a decade,my opinion anyway.Sadly those i mention have a limited interest that spans a few overplayed classics and they don't want anything they don't know so its been a case of a takeover for the worst.Talking to quite a few this seems to be the case in many areas not just around here. One night a few years back i was up talking to a mate of ours Martyn who was at the decks and this bloke came up mouthing where was the motown the night advertised? well of course he didn't realise but he had just listened to a half a dozen in a row............but stoned love etc was all he knew......says it all really so although folk should feel welcome they should also appreciate they can't arrive and start dictating.

For me anywhere you can keep the numbers until the end which is getting harder with a good mix of the underplayed uptempo and smattering of classics.............seems the overplayed classics crowd pull out early if you forgive the pun and so with crowd gone the night then becomes flat.So if, if only we could bring back Middleton in its old place with the great mix of sounds and dj's and a crowd well up for it from start to finish and Simon knows he was right among it too that would be a winner !! Great one Phil Dick put on a bit back at Morecambe, brilliant music and room but again those there dancing before midnight had all but gone by say 2am leaving it almost empty.Nighters due to this must have a limited time now to run Stoke aside maybe where only the huge numbers ensure the place still has a few at the end but maybe they leave through thinking they have heard everything played more than once ! the reason i don't and haven't attended there for a few years now.........very sad really all this as the nighter is the real deal no question. Last saturday was a first in that ive never had free ice pops and coffee at a nighter ! ice pops are they the future ?
-
Great nostalgia there from the heart of soul lol..........1.22 and my mate Marty was dumped back without his shirt after some sort of testing no doubt........all those bags full of nerve agents !!
-
Anyone Know if this is the imber near Porton Down ? maybe there was a leak of a new nerve agent.

Bang on mentioning Sean Pete, say at Whitby as he once told me he was on his record stall but still taking in what was being played so he could leave any off his list that he may have been going to play, last time i was there in his set he repeated one and i dare say that was because there is now music in the foyer which drowns the main room, others with maybe the odd exception seemed not to give a jot about repeats.Middleton and i always seem to bring the old place up ( cos it was brilliant that's why ) you were pushed to hear a couple of repeats in nearly 12 hours !!! speaks volume's in my book.

How could you miss this gem Rich and a white demo too !!!! someone's going to be very lucky securing this one https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Frank-Wilson-Do-I-Love-You-White-Label-Promo-Northern-Soul-New-Vinyl-45-/140936243763?pt=UK_Records&hash=item20d0746a33 Demo -
This could have been written by me,how some can do these and not get sickened beats me......sadly shed loads of tunes that should fill floors go unplayed ! One well known promoter when asked by a mate of mine about this gave the answer that there are lots of new attendees at the weekenders etc he runs and they only know a limited amount of tunes and so want to hear these often...........when asked what about those who also paid to get in and wanted to hear more than a limited number of tunes or constant repeats ,well he hadn't an answer for that,i have to admit now to staying away, one i travelled over 300 miles round trip to often for a nighter i haven't been in a few years for this reason.

What Album Never Left Your Turntable When You Were Younger?
Joefromupnorth replied to Davebanks's topic in All About the SOUL
For me the most played 75ish and crammed with so many absolutely top tracks "Jumping at the Go Go" -
My son started working at the local sixth form college a couple of years ago and in coversation one day he said there is lots of the kids with bags with " Northern Soul " logo's on them, widespread it seems reading above. I find it strange you would want a logo you knew nothing about though.

Hey Mate Can't You Play Something Decent Like
Joefromupnorth replied to georgeblackwell's topic in All About the SOUL
Drunk customer; 'Can you play summat I like?' Me; 'What do you like?' Drunk customer; 'I dunno........' I've had this conversation more times than I care to remember! A woman comes up and says "Mr DJ" (which i'm not by the way, just playing a few given chance) have you got something we all know, refering to a group of blokes and women she was with,i was just setting away the Autographs and i said here's one for you !! ooooo i don't know that, so i said well tell me what you would like and i'll tell you if i have it with me,oooooo i don't know !! any we might know,i said well if you don't tell me i don't know what you might know......it went on until she gave up and knocked the record on the way down !!!! they were all leaving early either through me taxi actually it was, she started ranting about what was the point of playing what i had as hardly anyone was dancing !!!! which was true except those dancing knew and appreciated what they were hearing which were all top class underplayed oldies those not we can do without ,in my opinion of course. So i shouted get yourselves out of the town and learn something. -
The Vibrations Cause your mine Most copies in the hands of the spinners must be worn through to the slip mat by now !! Another following close behind The Majestics.

Just learned of the sad loss of a mate from the 70's Les Metcalfe whom also no doubt will be fondly remembered around the Manchester area too. Les was one smart lad back then and to me epitomised the scene, although i'd not seen him all those years it was great to hear from other mates that he was still doing ok.........RIP Les Metcalfe Published in the The Northern Echo on 23 January 13 METCALFE On January 19, died peacefully at St. Teresa's Hospice, Les aged 57 years, of Darlington. Sadly missed by his mam Beryl, his sister Elaine and brother Ron, loving partner of Mandy. Friends please meet for service at Darlington Crematorium on Mon-day, January 28, at 1.15 p.m. Family flowers only, donations if desired to St. Teresa's Hospice (collection plate available at the crematorium). Les requested mourners in Man City colours if preferred, strictly no red.

Well thanks to all the above as youve saved me naming any, special thanks to Ian and Steve L as you got six i would have put........all i need now is the numbers for this weeks lottery lads !!
-
If indeed it was an early wheel play that could be understood as it was less than ten years old at that point, the best as they say was yet to come !! and of course the spinners at that time would have been digging in what was without doubt a difficult field without todays comms. overload to help find records. But repeating my point,Bill Black as was mentioned earlier became a memory from the Wheel and would be played purely for that reason without it being as accepted as it is by later crowds but the point is now we all have more to choose from and tunes left on the shelf why dig around amongst the doo wop/rock and roll stuff now to play in a northern room when theres proper tunes begging to be played and you don't need pots of money to buy them. This one seems to have been left on the shelf for the same reasons but now has resurfaced to the detriment of other more deserving records.
-
Much to do with it probably being the Drifters, any idea who played it first anyone ?? maybe they will read this thread,i'd guess at someone known over a wide area as thats usually how they end up around the country getting plays in the first place and to me thats sometimes a bad thing as there has been some dross in my opinion played only because " X " played it somewhere or other and so it must be brilliant.
-
Barney but its not as in yer face as its an intsrumental,my point is why and even more so all these years later with the net etc and more knowledge do we need em whilst forgetting about those records that deserve a chance.
-
Nice to be vindicated lads,i was worried for a time there when nobody replied,i thought no this could be the future lol..........don't know about leaving the room, didn't those Teds start ripping seats out when their music was played, bit worrying for the venues
-
A few in conversation have mentioned this reocrd to me over the last year or so saying how much they like it i just heard it saturday and thought surely this is moving away from the music the scene is centred around ? who started pedalling this as soul ? if we are going to have to listen to this era why then not invite the survivingTeds to the party and get some Big Boppa etc on the decks !! I ask who started playing it because do they think the true sound from the 60's has been exhausted ? if they do they need to be shown the error of their ways as there is shed loads of tunes out there some going for less than £2 that are danceable and more importantly soul. Trouble is those running many of the venues specialising in the worn out haven't a clue and it then begs the question is it all about door money, the music secondary. Your thoughts ?? a nice stirring one for the start of 2013.....all the best
