Tony's was first run by Guy Hennigan and I under the Soultown banner which I had previously used for London soul nights with Tony Smith. I think the first night was probably around 87 and I was involved before taking a sojourn from the soul scene to 'regroup' and enjoy the second summer of love. Hi, Keb and Guy were definitely the boys in the mid 80s and turned over an amazing amount of records. One of Stafford's great strengths (and weaknesses!) was that if you missed one week you would probably not know a good proportion of the tunes at the next niter. Keb's great tunes are too many to mention but like any of the other greats he did spin a few shockers. I don't know if this deserves another thread but The Terrible Tom c/u (my traumatised mind has erased the artist details as a defence mechanism), There She Goes Again (Again, remember it was on Columbia but rest erased) and the Enchantments still give me nightmares!
