Hi Dave, I was referring to Chandlers itself. Barrie definitely told me he was aware of it well before it was played. I was still swapping top trumps cards in '76 so I can't add any other comment. Regards Ion

Hi, I think Brad and Barrie Waddington could throw some light on this. I remember Barrie telling me it was around in Burnley way before it was played and was known in rare soul circles for other side. Regards Ion

Is The 'Upfront' Soul Scene Disappearing Up It'S Own A*se?
Ion T replied to Len's topic in All About the SOUL
Hi Rod, Good to hear from you. You are probably right and may well have heard about it from Brad/Barrie prior to it being spun. I seem to recollect Barrie had owned the record for quite a time before he sold it to me. If I remember correctly, when he put it on a tape for me he said he had found it 'at the bottom of a wardrobe'. Brad and Barrie were turning up a great deal of records back then. I had first copies of King George - I Need You - Audio Arts, Ricky Lewis - Mercury, Barry White - Faro in the same batch and Guy also regularly got some great stuff from them. It was great to see them both at Brad's 60th recently - top lads and very unassuming! All best Ion -
Is The 'Upfront' Soul Scene Disappearing Up It'S Own A*se?
Ion T replied to Len's topic in All About the SOUL
Hi, Just to set the record straight. I bought Sandi Golden off Barrie Waddington (Brad may have been in cahoots with Barrie). I played it covered up in the 80s for 5-6 years and sold it to Rob in 90/91. I believe Rob subsequently sold the same copy to Richard Searling. I have never come across any reference to it having surfaced previous to the Barrie copy. All best Ion -
The Parisians / Traditions - Twinkle Little Star
Ion T replied to Douglas's topic in Look At Your Box
Hi, I have to agree regarding the comments re Parisians supposed rarity. I picked it up from Keb for under a fiver in the early 80s (It came from Bernie Golding's hoard). You often saw the record and it never commanded a big ticket. All best Ion -
Hi, I remember DJing at Tony's Empress Ballroom in it's 80s heyday when a guy approached the decks with a request. Pete Lawson was on the stage and intercepted the 'requester'. Pete sent him away having told him I didn't have the record (It may have been "Soulful Strut', memory is vague but an obvious oldie). Anyway, the guy goes to the record bar and reappears on stage brandishing a newly purchased copy of requested tune). Pete took the record off him and threw it off the stage. Pete always had uncompromising views on played out oldies..... I wish Pete had been at my side when DJing at The International Students Centre in the late 90s in it's pre Crossfire days. A big Scandinavian guy came up to the decks and asked "Can you play some rock?'. I asked him if he had noticed all the DJs had been playing rare soul all night to which he replied with a certain degree of logic "Time for a change, eh?' All best Ion

Little Ron & The Esquires "i Found Someone" Charade

Hi, pm'd you. All best Ion -
Ah yes, the northern soul combs. I remember Blondie from Stoke telling us that he could get some promotional anniversary stuff done for Sean McLusky and I at a fraction of the usual price. When the combs turned up and the horror subsided we thought they worked well in a 'beyond crap' type of way. Sadly nowadays combs would be beyond crap and pointless as a northern soul giveaway.... Guy Hennigan and I did one or two dates there under the Soultown banner in the mid 80s. It was a great space with a fantastic floor, high ceilings and statues set in the walls. Sad to say, attendances was poor and we knocked it on the head. The funniest thing was turning up to view it and finding the masonic regalia laid out and ready for action! All best Ion

Hi Kev, French students with linen - only in London and only at the Alex. It always attracted a young 'left bank' crowd. Lots of good memories - Lenny etc. Perhaps you should do a reunion! All best Ion

Hi, I think quite a few of us made the transition from mod/scootering clubs to the full northern scene via the Notre Dame and other similar venues at that time (81/82), that were serving up northern soul to a mix of London mods and northern exiles. I remember Keb playing and possibly Dick Coombs with a mix of old oldies, late Wigan biggies and newer stuff as mentioned in earlier posts. I remember Mark Taylor, Matthew Simpson, Bob from Streatham, Gary Pluck, Annabel and a lot from West London used to go there and we all graduated to 100 Club, Peterborough, Stafford etc. We were all 16 to 18 at the time and just being out in Soho seemed exciting at the time. It has been recently used as a comedy venue and I went to see Stuart Lee perform a year or so ago. I am pleased to report that the venue is pretty much intact. All best Ion

I think I should point out that both Ken and I agree that Shakey Jakes (sounds like Tom Waits to me) is not to our personal taste....

I think B J Thomas has a bit of form on this scene... PS Oh, and let's not ignore the fact that it's a. northern & b. good

Hi, Barrie Waddington (Brad may have been involved as well) turned up the first copy of this and I had it off him and played it as Eric Mercury. The stop/start thing sounded right at the time, coming just after Big Frank, Chris Morgan etc. It's definitely a lot harder than the price tag suggests. All best Ion
