  1. Hi, I looked into this a while ago and the actor is the son of our idol. Regards. Ion
  2. You leave a thread for a few days, come back and the plot has gone on some Da Vinci code, JFK how many shots in a northern soul stylee type of way. The record pictured looks exactly the same as the copy I had through the 80s and the Loch Ness 'synth'' sounds are attributable to instruments available at the time. I always believed the record was from the West Coast which makes sense as Barrie Waddington (possibly with Brad) turned it up and Barrie had amazing West Coast knowledge and contacts. If I remember correctly Barrie had owned the record for several years prior to passing it on to me. Unless my memory is doing a number, he played it to me down the phone as 'something I found in a cupboard'. I remember also getting King George 'I Need You' in the same batch and weird pieces such as 'J D Abram', Ricky Lewis on Mercury and 'Noquola and Spiders' from Barrie/Brad around the same time - they were top boys for turning up rare records. It always makes me laugh when most/vast majority on the Northern scene weren't interested in unknowns in the 80s when they could still be found yourself or picked up off others for rarely more than £40 but are happy to rave about them 25+ years later and fork out £1,000s when they have been spun/played to death by others. Baaa, Baaa. Ion
  3. Hi, I had the first copy of Sandy Golden in the 80s and the disc pictured at the top looks right although it has been a few years since I had it. Regards Ion

  10. Hi Trev, Good to hear from you. You have a better memory of the night and my tunes than I do, but they were all things I had at that time except the Helen Moore which I remember Cliffe having and me doing some serious coveting! All best Ion
  11. Hi, To set the record straight I got the first copy off Barrie Waddington/Brad around 84 and played it for 4/5 years covered up as George Hobson. Cliffe Steele had always loved the record and I let him have it for a modest amount (thats what you did with pals back then) when I sold up my then DJ play box around 90ish. I am pleased it is now given the credit it deserves, at the time most people seemed more interested in The Enchantments and the like. If memory serves me I also had the first Sandy Golden in the same deal - Barrie and Brad were amazing at turning stuff up and very few people seemed to be interested in unknowns... All best Ion

  13. Hi, I have a copy for sale. Vinyl is a good VG+ with just some light scuffs, sleeve marks. There is ring wear to the label. These are all pretty poorly recorded on styrene and the sound quality is not perfect so I have a soundfile which I can email so you can judge yourself; let me know your email address and I will send over I am looking for £400 posted registered of course. Regards Ion
  14. Hi, I think that people can get the wrong impression about Stafford at times. Yes, most of the DJs played the odd slow tune and other elements such as Latin got some exposure but the bulk of the records played by the 60s orientated DJs were still traditional 60s northern records - modern hour excepted. Wigan played a really broad scope of music but is not remembered for funk or disco; likewise the Stafford DJs were very skilled at playing small elements of broader stuff within a northern set without getting lost down a paticular avenue. Gary Rushbrooke may have played 'Use It Before You Lose It' or "Spanish Maiden' but these were within an hour of generally uptempo northern such as 'The Stran', Naturals etc. Similarly, Guy may have played a couple of really slow items such as Clyde McPhatter 'Cant Afford To Cry' or The Ghetto Boys but this would have been within a set dominated by 'Naughty Boy', Detroit Rhythm Section, Hurtin' etc. What I have not seen since Stafford was the amazing turnover. If you missed a niter you probably wouldn't know 15%/20% of records played, most DJs played new stuff every set. A great venue, but often misunderstood. Ion
  15. I think there is a lesson here for any aspiring young DJs out there. Your first instinct may be to acquire Gillyesque discs and jealously hold on to them. However, lets look at the facts... Keb Darge was then living life in one of the worst tower blocks in London's Murder Mile eeking out a living as an underpaid soul hero and fulltime meat salesman. He went against his baser instincts, gave the record to Gilly and lets look at the results. He is now a household name across the clubbing world, lives in a tropical paradise and is married to a lovely girl who is half his age. There has been an undeniable cause and effect. I would like to suggest that rather than reactivating underplayed records young DJs reinstate the 80s DJ tradition of giving Gilly great records as he would undoubtedly have a far higher level of appreciation for their finer qualities. Who will be the first?
  16. Yeah, you're half right in the same way as a person can be half pregnant... Completely good to hear from you pal. Regards Ion
  17. Hi all, I'm sorry to be contrary but actually Keb had Buddy Smith and gave it to Gilly as a present as he thought it was a Gillyesque disc. Regards Ion
  18. Yes, I think that is the correct term. I seem to recollect a full and frank exchange of views when I ran into person concerned... Regards Ion
