  1. Hi Guys,

Are we going to get the story of the KR/SS break in, and also why SS disappeared?

I am going to tell my lad to read this thread, as it has taken me right back to my roots, and should be compulsory reading for all newbies.

Best thread I have read on here.

QUOTE; Are we going to get the story of the KR/SS break in, and also why SS disappeared?

Hopefully I know what Ian is refering to. Apologies, if this story has already been revealed earlier in the thread.

In March 1974, Simon took me to Ray Avery's Rare Records in Glendale, CA.

He appeared to annoy the owner and without any warning was hoofed out of the store(allegedly he made a big mess on a previous visit), leaving yours truly in the back room/warehouse staring at 250,000 45's...mostly 60's promos.

I distinctly remember picking up Otis Leavill, Obrey Wilson, Lou Edwards-Columbia promos plus I think..an unknown Lance Rentzel at the time.

Just sidetracking for a moment, Lance married Joey Heatherton, the sister of my best friend Dick(former WCBS DJ in New York).

Anyway, I suddenly heard the legendary French accent hollering through the toilet window....Baby boy...

listen to me carefully...I am going to tell you what to look for...before rattling off unknowns he had recently found ie Willie Hutch on Dunhill, Tony Middleton on Mala etc etc.

I ended up pulling around 600 sides of which he paid for and threw me a few winners... F.O.C.

If my memory serves me correctly, this was the store that gave us the Casualeers first.

Ironically, 20 years on from that story, I happen to be interviewing 60's hitmakers The Walker Brothers for Magic, whereby John(Walker) grew up in Glendale and bought Make It Easy On Yourself-Jerry Butler from the same store. The rest is history.

As for Simon Soussan...rather like Ian D, I found him charming, delightful company and never felt threatened by him in deals.

I think his flamboyance got in the way of his natural talent, hence his dealings with some, turned sour.

Certainly without his 'creativity' in enhancing the Northern scene during 1973-6, I doubt its popularity would be as strong. I do feel sorry for the late Tom Dieperro in the Frank Wilson saga...but just imagine if SS had not been involved, we might have very little to talk about on that particular subject!

Probably the best dinner guest you are ever likely to meet and a fantastic record hound.

a few people have asked if I could put together something for the refrosol part of this forum to celebrate the greatest Northern Soul live show of all time.

With Mike Hughes help I might be able to get 30mins from the contempo recording on here for all those that have never heard it before plus another 30min hit from the recent Chris Lalor tape that Toad did for us all.

I missed the Major lance night in Dec 1972 and can only dream what it must have been to be there as the live recording I played yesterday made me tingle....its fookin awesome.

So over to you guys, if theres enough interest we'll have ago at editing etc over the weekend.

  6. Kev , Sam , I really hope you get them back , you must be heart broken , I know I would . Lets hope that the records find there way to Robs :(

P.S is there any way of identifing the records , eg names on labels ect

    Hi Everyone,

Firstly a major thank you for your support and kind words. It really has been a traumatic 24 hours with a reasonably happy ending.

Let me outline exactly what happened.

Following a terrific get together at the ION Bar, London on Monday night, we drove back on Tuesday and had a 7pm meeting at the Gateway Hotel, Nottingham, situated 1 mile from the M1/Jnc 26.

We parked outside the Main Entrance as the Car Park was full. Good lighting, CCTV etc.

The main problem with this well known venue is, it backs on to the Broxtowe/Strelley/Cinderhill estates, notorious for Drugs/Burglary etc, which overshadow the majority of decent people who live there.

At 9.30pm, we realised someone had smashed the whole of the back window, which is no mean feat on a 4x4. You could not see into the back, so clearly a random 'lets take a chance n grab' scenario by local druggies.

Following a sleepless night for the pair of us, a good samaritan from Broxtowe called us at 11am to say he had found my records strewn over the grass verge on Banks Lane close to the hotel along with our credit cards, driver's license etc etc. He discovered them cycling to work at 7am this morning.

Clearly these were robbed by local scally's and not Soul fans.

At 3pm this afternoon, I got the majority of my treasures back.

At first glance my Lou Pride and Yum-Yums originals are missing and some British 45's are slightly water damaged ie Mary Love(King), Lynn Randell(CBS) with Herbert Hunter(Spar) cracked.

My credit cards are intact but obviously we had cancelled them last night.

The police are busy collating surveillance data, so hopefully the perpetrators will be caught.

I think we all share the same mind about the thieving our Northern Soul originals.

PLEASE TAKE EXTRA CARE OF YOURS!

Once again.....thank you for your concern. The pair of us can sleep a tad easier tonight.

    Best Wishes,

    Kev and Sam

PS To John Manship...thanks for your call....very much appreciated.

  7. A major theft occured tonight in Nottingham at the Gateway Hotel.

Approx 150 Rare Originals were stolen from a car outside the hotel reception.

Police investigation is well underway, but hopefully the scene can offer the right expertise.

Any information/intelligence would be greatly appreciated and a reward is on offer.

    Please email me; samsinthehouse@aol.com

    A sample of the 45's-all originals STEINWAYS, SEVEN SOULS, MONTCLAIRS(Arch)DEAN COURTNEY(Black), LORRAINE CHANDLER-all 3, VIBRATIONS(EPIC), LOU PRIDE,

MAJOR LANCE-NO MORE(Okeh), LEE DAVID, COASTERS, DYNAMICS, CARSTAIRS, JAMES FOUNTAIN. More to be added as we come to terms with the theft.

    Approx £40,000 in value.

  8. Kev Roberts wouldn't have known the 100 Club was clashing with his do until today, so he probably assumed Butch would be doing his. The 21st was the only date I could get in Feb. I've not even thought about the DJ line ups yet but Butch has an open invitation to DJ at any of them that he wants to. Unless its all female or international etc. No wise cracks please.

He'll make up his own mind in due course.

Thanks for the heads up. We have made Butch's mind up for him.....he's doing the 100 Club.

    Not a problem for us.

  9. A new show to brighten up SUNDAY nights, create new interest and hopefully boost attendances.
