  1. Hopefully this thread will end shortly, otherwise Dave and Sarah will start billing Goldsoul for Ronaldo type wages. :D

As a DJ/promoter maybe I can offer a brief insight as to why 'Dave is God'

For those who are unaware how he developed the Oldies scene before the word was actually used within NS circles, let me enlighten you....more importantly why haven't you read it in my book

Dave Evison stood behind the decks in 1974 watching my DJ box while I went to the loo.

The venue was Top of the World, Stafford(yes long before the All Nighter of the 80's). Keith Minshull and I were the residents on a Monday.

Losing my train of thought while talking to the manager Tony Marshall, I realised the record had ended and flew downstairs, while observing panicky Dave searching for a suitable track to play.

My box was locked, leaving only the Saturday night jocks pop/disco singles available.

Dave took 'Move On Up'-Curtis Mayfield mumbled a few words and to my amazement...the floor was rammed. Remember, the Northern scene back then was totally fixed on the current biggies/Rarities at the time. Wigan, The Mecca etc had no outlet or market for Don Covay 'Its Better To Have' and such like.

Dave opened the doors to a more relaxed, less intense way of listening and indeed talking about Northern 45's....in fact he became The Pope of Northern Soul.

People often ask why I use the same names at the Stokes, Blackpools, Whitby's etc. A no brainer for us...they are the most popular and best loved by the masses.

Dave will be on stage at 11pm on Saturday at the UK's premier All nighter venue in his hometown, delivering full floors to a 40 year variety pick n mix from The Matador-Major Lance to I'm Gonna Walk-Mickey Lanay....now that's talent backed up with credibility, likeabilty and most of all ABILITY!

    Arise SIR DAVE :D

As the UK owner of the master 'You Don't Love Me' I can tell you a few things about this beautiful Double sider.

Firstly, the group led by Bob Paladino were a Italian group from New Jersey.

Both sides were cut in 1968 according to Tony Camillo who I spoke to at length just before SoultripUSA, 2006.

I am yet to obtain a publicity shot, but Tony remarked that it was 'just another session' and another fantastic chapter in our beloved history.

As for Bob, I did get a lead but it came to nothing. A member of Vito and the Salutations gave me a phone number only to get the 'the number you have dialled has been disconnected'

I had hoped the group would be the cream in the coffee for the travelling UK faithful to Soultrip, New Brunswick, NJ....sadly it wasn't.....however the Del-larks made up for it.

  4. I'd love to hear it, any chance of posting it up?

    gary

It's unreleased from 1972. Kent discovered it as they were dealing with Fred James before Goldsoul.

Unfortunately when we decided to run with it, the track had been pretty much used up, hence it didn't sell for us.

We have about 8 copies left if anyone wants them at £5 each.

    Pay at orders@goldsoul.co.uk

I think only Ace have the rights to it now, though the owner shows up on Google as a licensor....still.

Brilliant track that will get much bigger. I regularly play it on Solar.

    Great discovery by Kent.

  5. Not sure if anyone knows yet, but Viola Wills passed away yesterday.

Recording for Bronco, Supreme and various UK labels, Vi had been living in Brighton for a few years until a recent move back to LA. She was a good friend of mine.

  6. I'd say boot...

    Mal :D

    [/quote

    Wrong Mal.....

Fred James at Bluesland, owners of Spar and Ref-o-Ree licensed 20 tracks to Goldsoul which in turn were used to compile the now deleted cd title 'Golden Age of Northern Soul vol.2

    As a limited 45, we made 300 on the label's imprint Ref-o-Ree.

It didn't sell. And if my memory serves me correctly, we sold most to Crazy Beat as...like a few collectors thought...it must be a boot. Actually it's perfectly legit.

But as Goldsoul are no longer in the Record Distribution business, we really have no interest.

That alone will probably make the record valuable, as less copies were distributed than the Kent single.

  7. Well if we ever update the Top 500 book. Here's a neat piece of trivia from the original producer Lou Barretto.

Jimmy Mcfarland cut it originally with the Tiaras on background vocals.

Lou of course produced 'Gone With The Wind Is My Love' on Dore.

    Rita now lives in Georgia.

Lou, now aware of the Northern scene, hopes to dig out a few rarities for us all to listen to.

Hopefully he will link up with Kent or similar.

Blowing My Mind To Pieces- Jimmy Mcfarland eh!

  8. I never made it any further than 69....

I saw it back in the 70's as a guest of my good friend Jerry Blavat, the legendary 'Geator with the Heator' DJ from Philadelphia, at one of his 'Record Hops'(over 30's handbag night to you and me).

No idea how to do it, but it was a sort of line dance type thingy.

For the record, Kenny Gamble and Jerry Ross wrote the song with JB in mind, as his hot play on Radio at the time was 'In My Lonely Room' -Martha and the Vandellas. The 81 is almost identical in melody.

Apparently 'the ol geator' is still mixing the two together at one of his gigs in Feasterville, New Jersey on a weekly basis!

More totally useless but hopefully entertaining trivia......soon.

Now back to Hippo and his 69........(hello mate) biggrin.gif

  9. Paris was pressed in November 1964, according to its 55049 delta.

Ady-It does look as if you have the correct information pressing wise.

Frank revealed 1966 for Connie Clarke. Producers though, can have a lapse in memory.

The Paris track certainly sounds '65 and Connie '66....well to me anyway.

Recordings can be deceptive though, as we all discovered in Detroit with Mel Britt, when he revealed 1972 as the recording of his epic song. Most clearly thought 69/70.

    Kev

  10. Tarpon (the original release label) is one of the writers - Billy 'The Kid' Emerson - label.

Every other release I've come across on the label is by him - so there's a fair chance he cut a guide vocal at least...

One thing is for sure......Denise knew nothing of Nolan!

I interviewed Miss Laselle in 06 and spoke to Charles Davies aka Nolan Chance prior to his death.

Both had no idea of any other versions!

The wonderful and mysterious record business. biggrin.gif

  11. Anyone got the full story on Connie Clark - My Sugar Baby (Joker) please?

In particular, anyone know where this was recorded, session dates, details etc.?

    Cheers

    Richard

Recorded in June 1966 with Frank Wilson and Marc Gordon supervised by Hal Davies in Los Angeles.

Contrary to reports, Connie is a session singer found by Frank. Earlier threads suggest it's 'Chris Clark'...which is untrue.
