  1. No back slapping at all, it's simply a game of two halves, those who were around long enough to know Ian and the ones who arrived on the scene much later(ie Stafforders etc). He clearly has little appeal to them.
  2. Ady.......no one is disputing your claims as to his business practice back in the day. All I, JM, ID are saying is, he had rights to certain things. He wasn't difficult to figure out either. If he had the dosh, he generally did things the right way, if he was short...well...... Boy what a discoverer of tuneage though with a flair to match. Just for today......like him a little......?
  3. Thanks......Funnily enough......all it needed was a bit of simplicity.......I phoned his engineer the late Clive Scott and played him 'Pressure'-Drizabone, hence the remixed version on Goldsoul. Fortunately Ian liked it, so it got a ltd vinyl release. A talented man with great ideas in need of input from others....occasionally.
  4. As Tony Rounce said 'its turning into a IL Slagfest.......as per usual. If you don't know him or have anything constructive to say......SHAT 'AP! Back on topic...... Anyone like 'Don't Wait Around'-The Elgins(IL Production)......meaning the 45 on Goldsoul not the Motor City City original?
  5. .......
  6. At last....a sensible and detailed reply! Kangaroo court over ? Patto- turn that mutha up LOUD!
  7. Chalky- I will leave you with this...... 1. How did he get the Instrumentals? 2. Why were the reissues pressed at the same plant Modern used at the time? 3. How come I saw them at Modern? Remember, they were an active reissue company long before Ace bought them. Now if you want to discuss Richard Temple on Stephanye or Frank Wilson on In.....I will agree with everything you say!! Have a nice night.
  8. Chalky-The jury is not out. I would hate you to be a judge! Firstly, you do not know him, secondly you were not around at that time. I was and furthermore was at Modern records over 30 years ago and found copies in their office! Soussan certainly had a personality that was way too flamboyant for us average Northern bods, but he booted records when he either A/ Couldn't find the owners or B/ Was short of cash flow. But the reality is, he did do some things right and the Modern reissues were one of them. Your statement is weak mate....saying well he's got a reputation so he must be guilty is way off beam. If you knew him like Ian Dewhirst, Neil Rushton and I you would take a very different view. As much as it hurts some, he was better for the scene than not. His creativity pushed the movement forward and the Modern instrumentals proved it,otherwise we would not be discussing them some 37 years later. I appreciate your input into Northern Soul, but this is not the thread for you. All the best, Kev
  9. Well it ain't a boot. End of.
  10. What planet are some people on. I feel for regulars like Pete Smith with these kind of threads. Of course they were legal. How do you think Soussan got the tapes? He was dealing with Modern long before Ace/Kent came on the scene as licensees.
  11. Wasn't there a book about a chart or something?
  12. Mike- Can you close the thread. Thanks.
  13. Mike- You can close the thread. As usual, the same brawling drunks going through the revolving door in order to hijack the thread, continue to turn others off. Thanks to the folks who got in touch...yer contact details have been passed to the production company.
  14. Tickets from www.goldsoul.co.uk
  15. Guys for crikes sake calm down! We posted up a genuine request from a programme maker!!" No wonder why so many are frightened off when they read such aggressive remarks. GROW UP!
  16. Well nothing new here, but if you live in the Wigan area and fancy being on TV, PM us and we'll put you in touch with the programme makers. A bit short notice I know, but they are filming Sunday night and all day Monday. The episode being shot, is about the town including the inevitable reference to Station Rd, hence the request for two couples to show out a couple of moves! Thanks, Kev@Goldsoul
  17. The band were lead by Royce Hyatt, a local Progrssive Rock musician in Michigan. They briefly took a shot at a pop single bearing in mind, groups like Chicago and the Ides of March were scoring chartwise at the time. Royce is still around, moving to California several years ago. He is fully aware of the Northern Soul interest in 'Compared To What'
  18. Edwin Starr- Scotts On Swingers (Ric Tic Demo rt-109-x) Mint Marvellos-Something's Burning-Marvellos(Loma) Mint Prefer British......any others considered except piles of £5 specials.
  19. Maggie Bell talks about her first single 'Ill Hold You' as one half of Frankie and Johnny for Decca.
  20. On Bank Holiday Monday, Aug 29, 8pm-12mid across the UK on Smooth Radio, the Northern Soul Double Top 20. First two hours the listener voted for, all time Top 20. Then the current 20 Floor fillers. Exclusive interviews with 'Frankie' & Johnny, Flame n King and 'Rita' and the Tiaras. Smooth Radio on FM, DAB, Sky, Freeview and on line.
  21. Yep.....agreed. I think Soul Fox and Shalamar got in the way of this one.
  22. The Duck was originally found by Simon Soussan in early 1974. He supplied acetates to myself, Russ and Richard at the Casino, probably around February. On a trip to LA in March(74) I purchased the original from him, but weirdly the B side had been totally sabotaged....unplayable and unreadable! Post-March, we all knew the identity of The Duck. Later(3-6 months) copies were found on Dunhill with the excellent flip 'Love Runs Out' immediately getting spins. One conspiracy theory could be, that SS, brimming with confidence, could have pressed up the Richard Temple-Let's DoThe Duck, then had 'Love Runs Out'(Richard Temple lol) ready on the production line. UK ABC beat him to the 2nd title or maybe he had set his sights on other titles. Willie's The Duck was huge for a short while, with fond memories of him performing it LIVE at the Togetherness Weekender, Fleetwood several years ago. What a double sider!
