  1. An official release limited to 300 for the Northern market. This was a demo that turned into Change My Darkness Into Light- The Flirtations on Josie. Herb Abramson, one of the original founders of Atlantic records and owner of the Festival label pressed the copies for me in 1978. After servicing one or two fellow DJs it sank without trace, probably due to the playlist at the time......Muriel Day, Joe 90, Kiki Dee etc etc.
  2. Don't know too much about it, apart from Martin Koppel secured the rights to Groovesville from Will Davies. A mass of tapes came over with that particular track marked Johnnie Taylor on the tape box.JT had worked at Groovsville, so we put 2+2 together, in the hope of not getting 4 and a half!
  3. If we are talking about RCA UK division, they had a useful Manchester arm that fed intelligence to them. Later Richard Searling became regional sales.Columbia in the 70's had two chunks of releases. The first in 1974 saw Bill Buster owner of Eric, link Selecta Disc to them. The Okeh label was the main focus with Major Lance, Billy Butler etc were reissued with a small 45 number on the label.Later in 1977/78, Simon Soussan persuaded Columbia Special products in LA to re-press for the UK market, Dana Valery, Lou Edwards, Poppies etc. Most were distributed by Inferno.
  4. The pink issues of the Carstairs I assume to be legal. Owner Gene Redd was very active back then.  The label was eventually sold to Unidisc in Canada, hence the mass availability of the song. The White Demo lookalikes are boots.
  5. The thread is degenerating already and it isn't 3 o clock yet!
  6. Steve, I love your optimism, but many old timers are genuinely nervous about the usual moronic ambush that takes place by a few. Just look at the Colin Curtis thread! Anyway, back to the plot. If you care to ask any specific questions, I will do my best to answer. Let's try and keep individual personalities out of it for legal reasons. OK?
  7. Throw a few direct questions and I will answer them. First sign of any slagfest against others and...... Kegsy...I'm all yours bro
  8. Join me in company with Patti Austin this Saturday at 10am on Solar and 6pm on Signal2
  9. Just advising of Tony's poor health and overall condition. He has MS. For those elder statesmen, Tony Jebb was the man who really made records happen at Blackpool Mecca with Les Cockell in '71 then alongside Ian Levine in '72 before securing a residency at the Torch 72/73. I'm sure like me, you wish him well. I am in touch with his carer and will pass on your comments for him to read. Hopefully your kind words will improve his mental state too. A sharp, intelligent record spinner with great ears and looks to match.....TONY JEBB

  12. Edward Hamilton's I'm Gonna Love You saw a variety of releases and campaigns to get a hit in 1966. My dear friend Bobby Jay played it on WWRL in New York hence the Jameco release. It appears it was popular in Detroit and NY but nowhere else. This might explain the different pressings at the time. I remember cleaning out Greenline in Jamaica, Queens in the late 70's and finding 500 on Jameco. Where the heck are they now? KR
  13. Written by Stan Vincent. I remember Ian Levine and I talking to him at Midem back in the 90's. The writer of the million seller Ooh Child -Five Stairsteps. Stan was a regular writer/producer for Buddah and distributed labels around 1968-74. Boy this looks RARE....never seen it, apart from Soul Sam playing at the Kings Hall,Stoke. Unlike Billy Davies on the same label which featured heavily at Selectadisc in 1972 via the 3 for £1 bin. I left it.....but The Valentinos-Sweeter... and Parliaments-Heart Trouble were a different story
  14. I doubt it. Direction had it available until the early 70's. It sold 1,000's in the UK and in some areas played in Youth clubs. Far rarer in the US.
  15. Clearly Stevie, Babcock and a few others were not around in '73......Simply, it was massive by the Invitations and would probably fill floors at any major venue even now. As for Wigan's Ovation...a simple piece of hype at the Casino, which hopefully is well and truly forgotten. The Invitations......a bit of a quirky song but Billy Morris sounds great on lead vocal. I like it.

  17. Just a quick teaser to what I'm about to tell Dave, JLM bought all the cut outs from Tone Distributors Miami in 1976. This was the load that had hundreds of Jimmy Bo Horne's I Just Can't Speak plus Mel Britts etc etc. John Anderson was there first with me picking up the slack.
  18. Dave- I dealt with him regularly in 1976/77. Email me for more.
