  1. Thanks for visiting Blackpool Tower, hope to see you at a Goldsoul event soon..
  2. Chalky- Pretty much an insult to Andy Dyson, Mick H, Ginger and others who work for Goldsoul . What you think Beggin is only played at somewhere I promote? It's massive on the mass Northern scene at many venues.
  3. The 'inane quotes' have gone. Felt right back in '99 when I first had the idea. Probably agree about the 'disc's making' but then again I am very concious of the larger audience I am trying to reach. Bite size chunks n all that. No leave of absence, just a lower profile in the 80's if that's what you are refering to? Just check in with Butch who was buying stacks of vinyl from me in 82/83, while I was busy discovering the likes of JD Bryant. Bob Sinclair-Tribute.........totally awful IMHO, but not according to NS masses. Your camp has produced a few winners for the book. Carla Thomas, Maxine Brown-It's Torture among others. Well done
  4. Abba sadly didn't make it, Voices of East Harlem in... yes siree. I think we just got an order from you.....Thanks.
  5. Chalky, Please tell me any event with large numbers that dance to Stormye Winters and the others you mentioned? Even after 20 years the Mello Souls is not that well known to the mass NS audience. The book is about judging what is popular now and during the course of the last 45 years. Your personal choices would probably never make a populist chart, but then again many of mine wouldn't either. A scene outside of Goldsoul...of course there is and I'm wired right into them, but it does not alter what the book stands for....POPULARITY. Hank Hodge cannot be compared to Paul Anka-When We Get There. Facts fella. As much as I dislike the latter. The simple fact is, the underground still serves a great purpose and acts as a breeding ground for a bigger picture later down the line on some titles. That's great for all concerned. Thanks for all the comments so far.
  6. Maybe you should go....come see what happiness is on a large scale You can pick up the book while yyou there....all sorted for Dec 1st.
  7. If the scene got behing more 'You Succeeded-Sandra Philips types, I would be a happy compiler. The dancer though always has the final word.
  8. Couldn't agree more, except the scene right now appears to be accepting the 50's, Disco and Reggae. Some break through into the '500' others wither away. The way it is...at present.
  9. Pete- I agree with you and Cunnie too! When do these oddities(to the scene) become fully fledged Northern Soul items, I guess when they are played at most venues. Bob Sinclair, Back Slop-Baby Earl, Beggin are fully encrusted now on NS Playlists. The jury's out on the the Double Barrell vocal and 54-46 which occasionally gets played, although I don't agree with it at the Kings Hall, even though I'm the promoter. But then again,I don't dance and clearly with the mass influx, that's what its all about. Nothings really changed though since the 70's..........My tastes(Billy Prophet, The Inspirations, Sandra Philips) others back then ...I'm Shaft, Ladies Choice, Music Maker, Falbala(ouch) etc etc
  10. Hi Dean- The book has a fair amount of changes. The Fast n Funky new trend is certainly progressing, but there isn't many that are really doing big business at the main venues. Hopefully we will witness a revolution, but it's going to take a mass influx of new souls to oust the likes of Billy Butler's-Right Track.
  11. I agree with Steve, the Mello Souls is a dead duck for most dancers and that is exactly why it's only popular among collectors plus the fact the original is almost impossible to get. It is messy, although I like it personally. But the dance floor doesn't lie. Same happened in most eras of the scene, The Inticers for instance on Baby Luv-fantastic but dancers disagree. Jimmy Bo is in the book.
  12. There you go again with that aggression...........calm, calm, calmer........there, that's it
  13. Frank Wilson in Corrie tonight.....Surely Nick could have used the book as a prominent prop in the Bistro ?
  14. Luvverrllyy. See you at the Kings Hall December 1st. The books are shrink wrapped, but had to open yours in order to sign it.
  15. Chalks-You'll be pleased to know it's not in the 500.......close though.
  16. Whaattttt...no way. Certainly not in the 13 months the nighter was open. Maybe at some revival 25 years later
  17. Kev- Tobi and Jimmy are way off in the current climate(you should get out more lol). It's all about Timebox and Bob Sinclair these days Oddly enough, Beggin' was a Folk House monster in 1969. The Strange World of Northern Soul indeed.
  18. Relevant background info and useful trivia on all entries. Hopefully after 40 years on the scene, I have enough info for you!
  19. Brilliant- I just batted it to her! Keep em coming.
  20. Kevin- A general overview of what I see at the venues I frequent backed up by DJ feedback plus a survey to over 1,000 on Facebook late last year. Most of the titles are in there.
  21. The weirdest thing of all in the last decade or so, is how and why some tracks reach astonomic proportions floor wise. Here's a few leaders: Bob Sinclair How/Why? Paul Anka 'When'. Bigger now than the 70's Billy Davis 'Stanky'. Soul packs in 72 Hamilton Movement. A grand and lukewarm in Northern arenas now 2 and half and floor filling Soul In The Sun- Tommy Hunt. Then again, I guess Travis Wammack- Scratchy sounded weird alongside You've Been Cheatin back in 66.
  22. Well I never. He bought his first rarities from me in Nottingham 76/77
