Paintbox was a near chart hit in 1971. Most youth clubs were playing it. It followed the pop rock mix into Soul. A typical playlist back then would have included She's Alright- McKenna Mendoldson Mainline, Too Busy Thinking About My Baby- Gene Latter, Paintbox mixed with Brooks and Jerry and Johnny Wyatt. Perfectly acceptable back then. Vanda and Young of the Easybeats produced the Paintbox session for Young Blood.

That's partly due to Bobby Martin remixing the Prophets and turning it into the 'Creation' master. A name given to the Prophets by Bill Buster owner of Eric records who subsequently re-released it in 1972 due to UK demand.

Pete- Any real evidence? I can only comment on how I found him. I think it's more his flamboyant personality that turned most Brit Northern collectors off. I wonder how many bought real treasures from him for pennies that are now worth mega bucks? Or about the folks selling his 'reissues' for vastly inflated prices. We were a better scene with him involved, in my humble opinion.

The Top 500 thread reached 7,000 views, are we heading there? Hopefully Jocko can start a thread about his recollection of the scene, somehow though I think he'll stay on this thread.

I'll pass. A badly run venue for many years. Goldsoul gave them their best turnover in one night and still they can't get it right. It would take some convincing for us to go back, whoever the new owners are.

Ian, The worst thing was, he sent the Casualeers to Russ before I had chance to get home and play it that weekend at the Casino I think we'll have to keep our fond memories of 'Simone' to ourselves. It's a case of you had to know him before making any real judgement. Funny to see one or two slagging him still while themselvelves and/or friends are selling his pressings for £30 plus on Ebay. Totally agree with Steve Smith's analogy..... Steve G's 'collection' question...I think Mick Smith was one of the first to pounce due to the haul being stored in Weybridge(too far for us Northerner's to travel, plus I imagine many did not take the collection too seriously....big mistake...huge! To confirm the doubters, here are the facts. Soussan discovered Anka's I Can't Help Lovin You. Wigan played it first with acetates being distributed to the 3 residents at the time.

Simon Soussan discovered it in late 1973 and it was supplied on acetate to Russ, myself and Richard with the name Johnny Caswell. It took off like a rocket around Dec 73/Jan 74 time and gave us a clear exclusive over the Mecca, which at that time, Wigan certainly needed.

Chalky- Pretty much an insult to Andy Dyson, Mick H, Ginger and others who work for Goldsoul . What you think Beggin is only played at somewhere I promote? It's massive on the mass Northern scene at many venues.

The 'inane quotes' have gone. Felt right back in '99 when I first had the idea. Probably agree about the 'disc's making' but then again I am very concious of the larger audience I am trying to reach.
