Dispute that allegation. Ian paid advances to Bettye Lavette. The fact he re-constructed the track and pressed 300 copies of a promo single means there would not have been any royalties to pay anyway.

Not supposedly...it is Ian Levine's production and of course its not a bootleg. He owns it and released a small number of promos 6/7 years ago.

Thanks for supplying the article, however she became aware of the record's minor popularity a decade ago, I interviewed her 10 years back. Boy does she sound Black on those sides. I doubt there's a tour waiting but great to see she's re-surfaced.

Oh no! A true legend and long time friend-Bob Plotnick. Very few got on with him, but what a character. I was with him and Mick Jagger in '81 talking about Northern and how much Bob hated limeys.....brilliant! My first purchase off him was 100 copies of the Dealers-You Got It(Big Bunny) back in '75.

On behalf of the Payne family...... Hi, this is Lynne. My family and I would like to thank everyone so much for their kind comments and good wishes following Michael's death last Friday. His funeral is taking place on Monday 22 April, at 11.30, at St Marys Church Church Lane Sutton in Ashfield NG17 2EB, followed by burial in the church yard. Afterwards at The Junction Pub and Restaurant, 2 Newark Rd Sutton in Ashfield NG17 5JP. Everyone is most welcome. We are sending just family flowers and any donations will be sent to British Red Cross and McMillan Nurses.

Tats is aware of the sad news and knew MP well. He was one of the young men you looked up to when we were 13 or so in the late 60's. We were getting into Johnny Johnson and the Bandwagon while Mick already had a formidable Wheel type collection.

Memories....... He taught me 'a thing or two about a thing or two' as the saying goes. Chillin' in Orlando some 15 years ago, he decides he wants to look for records(as you do!) and mentions Bananas in St Petersburg. I knew the difficult nature of the owners, stared at my 300ml Chardonnay and politely declined the 70 mile trip. Two meals, several drinks later, he returns clutching a bag of mint 45's incl Moses Smith(Dionn Demo), several Okeh's, Four Larks(Tower issue) and many more 20-50 quider's. How did that happen I asked, and smiling sweetly he replied....by acting dumb and saying little. I never went looking for records again without him! I think Tats bought his Bob and Earl Harlem Shuffle when he was about 10 or something...but that's another story. May that Florida sunshine glow on Michael forever.

We have the depressing news that one of the Northern scene's first pioneers has passed away this morning. Mick Payne was an ardent collector, local DJ in the Ashfield area who had been playing Soul since 1965!! A lovely man, thoughtful, caring and supportive to anyone who knew him. Mick was born in Kirkby in Ashfield and became one of the first guys in the area to play(very obscure at the time) Chuck Jackson, The Impressions, James Brown and early Oriole and Stateside's. Both Sam and I remember him fondly from our time with him locally and in his 'adopted' home Florida. Our thoughts are with his wife Lynne, son Steven, brother Peter, sister Gwen, Mum Freda and the rest of his family. Michael was 64.

Mel became a special friend to those who went on SoultripUSA 2009 to Chicago/Detroit. As the promoters of the event, we secretly arranged to pick up Mel from a motorway services near his home in Battle Creek, Michigan. Mel accompanied us to Hitsville USA and spent time chatting with most of us including Frances Nero and Dennis Coffey. Following a lunch and entertainment from the Capitols and others at Memphis Smoke, Detroit, he was amazed at the response as we ended the afternoon with his epic song. We dropped Mel back at the services to be collected by taxi. His words 'I know I will never see you again, but thanks for everything' will stay with us forever. Sheila Lazenby from Rotherham will be particularly upset, as she sat with him during the coach journey. Dave Raistrick, Donna Dean, Dave Moore, Dave Ferguson and Steve Gainey are amongst those who helped during the day and on their return. Mel was discovered in his homestate of Indiana by Donny Hathaway. Following a short stint with The Visitors in 1969/70, Robert Lee signed him to FIP. In 1972 with Tom Washington whereby he recorded 'She'll Come Running Back'. A track discovered in 1974 by Ian Levine, who in turn must be credited for finding him in 1999 for his SWONS project. My own memory of the man was during a brief chat on the coach, he mentioned his best friend was the late Wade Flemmons, who used to live closeby. I mentioned 'Jeanette' among others, with MB announcing he was at the recording session! Not only that, Jeanette(Hutchinson) of the Emotions was Wade's girlfriend.
