Bob...no idea on that one. All I remember is, I spent a pleasant afternoon listening to reels of 60's tapes owned by Herb. Most were Sidney Barness/JJ Jackson penned demos. When 'To Get To Know Ya' came up, he referred to it as the Superiors and Okeh solo artist Ken Williams.

I'm sure I answered this question a few years ago. 1. It ain't a boot. Herb pressed 300 of each and I bought them all for the uk market. Sadly the quality was so poor, they didn't sell. 2. This and Charlotte Stokes Is this the price I have to pay were both unreleased demos that Herb Abramson(owner of Festival records and Original Atlantic partner) gave to me in 1977/78. 3. Same source gave me the instrumental acetate of Stronger than her love. Sadly Herb is no longer with us.

I can't remember. It was around the time I came back from LA and I was swimming in top drawer finds only to be outsmarted by the Javells, Gary Lewis etc. I then got into the Bobby Franklin, Snoopy Dean grooves and let some of my discoveries such as the Seven Souls slip away for pennies. I certainly didn't hang onto JC for long!

Pete- The Out of the Past label came in late 73. There is no way Lynne Randell was a big Torch record. Hose Streeters...come on in! When Ian Levine took over at the Mecca from Keith Minshull in the Late Summer of 73, it became one of his first major spins. The White OOTP came first........I worked out of Marsh Parade, Newcastle at the time for Chris Burton.

Couple to clear up...... Lynne Randell(Mecca 1973 after the Torch had closed. Ian Levine). Never remember this at the Torch. Joanne Courcey(Twirl) a failed Wigan spin in 1974. I found this in a Soul Pack from a Belper, Derbys newsagents along with Paula Durante-Your Not My Kind. Happy New Year......

In answer to Sean and Dave.......My radio pal Bobby Jay was a very close friend of JR Bailey. He was the one who told me it was JR on the Chuck Wood track. In fact he went further by suggesting JR and Vernon Harrell often moonlighted on a variety of 60's Soul cuts whenever the record company were not keen on the 'chosen vocalist'. Of course that opens a whole new debate based on those assumptions ie Al Wilson-Help Me, Rubin -You've Been Away.

I think he mentioned Charlotte Stokes was in the group. Maybe Sidney Barnes knows? He was still pretty emotional over his Atlantic fall out.

You have a great memory, although I think I had them well before Rob opened(1980). 1977 seems to spring to mind. The acetate you mentioned was by the Ad Libs. A great time for me in NYC, bouncing between the likes of George Kerr, Herb Abramson(Festival) and a few others.

It isn't by Chris Bartley. The vocalist is Van McCoy himself. Richard credited it to CB as I only had the song sheet along with the original acetate which contained no identity of the vocalist. Van's sister told me it was Van when I played her my one off acetate of 'I Get The Sweetest Feeling'

Marc......Yes I'm certainly no expert on prices these days, but doesn't the base on which Northern Soul was built, centre around 'turntable demand'? Delrays at present is a cult 45 which hasn't fully crossed over, but it's getting there. Try buying one right now....... Search your price guides and look at others that were given 'a value' and subsequently spiralled to dizzy heights(Tomangoes..now 3k, I think you could get 4!-Hamilton Movement, Rita and the Tiaras and a few more I could mention). Why only 2 weeks ago I called a collector/fan to bag the 7th Ave Aviators on Congress, foolishly selling mine several years ago for 400. I was quoted 900! Is it worth it....no.....but everyone wants it. Thankfully I purchased Frankie Karl on Philtown DJ for 800, which I feel is a bargain at present. With so many DJ's around the world spinning our beloved genre, the demand has gone up for those 'hot, won't go away' 45's. IMHO

Latest offer is £750 It booked several years ago at 150 but the demand has rocketed since then. More interested in trades though not cash.

I think the acetate has TM publishers on the label. A well known music house, a lot of their stuff was mixed into the April Blackwood haul. Oddly enough, I was more impressed with finding a 10 inch reference dub of the Sweet Things at the time, now you would be all on to get £30 for it. The 70's eh!
