  1. Maybe we can draw a line under folks buying expensive records to somehow become 'big DJs'. Simply not going to happen. I get at least 2 a week telling me how they should be on the rosta at Stoke, Blackpool and other prestigious events. The advice I give is to save your money or enjoy the purchases at home. The scene is well covered by competent, professional DJs, many without Eddie Parker - I'm Gone.
  2. Removed the Solds. Added a few new ones today Friday Recently we purchased a collection from the U.S. The following are the ones we are selling at a very low price due to condition. All originals and at least two thirds off the retail prices. Please be advised though, these are very much for DJ use only. We grade them at G-VG only. All play perfect but if you are a condition freak, look away now. Many are worn with marks on vinyl. All £5 each plus postage £1.50 unless stated * Email sales@goldsoul.co.uk PayPal to orders@goldsoul.co.uk Free at last- the agents (golden hit) Misery-the dynamics (big top) These Hands small but mighty-Bobby bland(duke) Boss love-lee Rodgers ( d town) If I didn't love you- chuck Jackson (wand) Karate boogaloo - jerry o (shout) Open the door to your heart- darrell banks ( revilot) Magic potion inst-Lou Johnson ( big hill) Come back baby- roddie joy ( red bird) I still love you- the casinos ( fraternity) Tired of being lonely- the sharpess (one der ful) The way of a man- Darrow fletcher (revue) Standing on guard- the Falcons (big wheel) Special love - Walter jackson(Okeh) It takes two- four sonics (sport) Pearl baby pearl- Benny Poole (solid Hitbound) Monkey time- major lance (Okeh) Breakaway- Irma thomas (imperial) You must be doing something right- Gerri GRAINGER (double l) Across the street - Lenny o Henry (atco) Got to find a way - Harold burrage ( m pac) I need to be needed- Steve mancha ( groovesville) Moody woman- Jerry butler (Mercury) Girl watcher - o kaysions (abc) Magic Potion- Lou Johnson (pink Big Top) I don't want to lose you - Jackie Wilson ( Brunswick) When I'm gone- Brenda holloway (Tamla ) * 15 Sock it to em jb- Rex garvin ( like) Fell in love with you baby- the charts ( wand) * 10 Don't be sore at me - the parliaments ( revilot) *10 Real humdinger - jj barnes (ric tic) Gotta find a way - Theresa Lindsay ( correc- tone) My ship is comin in - Walter Jackson ( okeh) It's better to love - the magictones ( mahs) Here comes my baby - Johnnie Mae Matthews ( blue rock )

  4. I just heard from Tim Brown(his trusty aide and employer) that Rick Foster has sadly passed away. Working at Anglo American for many years, Rick was a real calming influence to us manic collectors and industry types. I liked him immensely and his musical integrity was second to none, even though we forced him to sell the 'North of Watford series on CD(in joke). The legendary night in Clapham to see Wilson Pickett will stay with me forever. A happy and thoroughly decent bloke. Rest in peace dear friend. Over to you Tod/Burnley/Hebden areas for your own tributes. We'll miss you Rick...TRULY x
  5. Truly shocking. Deeply saddened by the news.
  6. The absolute business. Billy Preston told me he stole the riff for the Beatles- Get Back. Destined to become a Top 10 playlist dancer.
  7. Congrats Dave. It was great seeing Merv at Soultripusa 2006 when he first announced he was a 'perfection'.........the look on the audiences faces, particularly Tim Brown
  8. Never find a bargain unless you are lucky getting the up and coming turntable hit before the masses lock on. Mine in more recent times is Andy Fisher on Fat Fish. Discovered in the Baby Clothes section EBay.com. That'll do nicely at $250
  9. I think Ted answered it Peter. Regardless of my personal taste ala The Young Bros, our customers make the call. Which is probably why Stoke etc are busy. If one of our DJs gets behind a 60's newie and the patrons buy into it.... Fantastic.
  10. Top 500....... I don't mean to be derogatory but 300 of anyone's 500 are rarely played. It's a Top 200 now with a few recent turntable hits like Jonathan Capree thrown in. 500 songs at a Soul night/major All Nighter...doesn't happen anymore. The Top 500 is a banded about dated phrase. On a positive note, I do hope the Young Brothers sold, as it's the absolute business.
  11. Russ- Here's the news......the scene is very healthy. If you want a 'big do' there's plenty of Stoke, Blackpool's around. Mid sized hits- Lots. Smaller, underplayed, rarer etc- Lots. No reason to question anything about Northern Soul. It's all good.
  12. Ian just called us to say 'Thanks from the bottom of his heart' for all the good wishes. Sadly Ian cannot make the launch night of his new Cutting Edge promotion at the Hammersmith Club, W6 on Sept 6, but hopes you might try it.
  13. It happened a few weeks ago. Ian kept it quiet as did his close friends, however someone got wind announcing it on Facebook. Ian confirmed the story earlier today. He asked me to cover for him at the Hammersmith Club on Sat Sept 6. He's not in good shape that's for sure, although improving. I am sure we all wish him a speedy recovery.
  14. Manchester's Steve 'Siz' Sale discovered it apparently.
  15. A Wigan Casino monster back in the day, Sue Lynne's bubbling intro 'Don't Pity Me, Don't Pity Me.... set dance floors alight in the 70's. Recorded in London in 1969 for RCA with 'Yesterday Man' Chris Andrews at the controls, Sue recorded 3 singles for the label. Born Susan Vanner, she left the music business after a short career with RCA. Developing as an actress, Sue starred in several motion pictures including the James Bond epic 'The Spy Who Loved Me'. In fact she is best known as 'the log cabin girl' underneath the loins of Roger Moore. In later life she married the son of Ken Todd, who is best known as the restaurant entrepreneur in Real Housewives of Beverly Hills along with his wife Lisa Vanderpump. So all turned out good for Sue instead of the usual hard luck stories. As with my recent chat to Muriel Day, Soul.....nah. Northern Soul....DEFFO! © Goldsoul My thanks to Chris Andrews Listen to The History of Northern Soul series at www.mixcloud.com/goldsoul
  16. Andy was my employee in 1977 and a really good fella. His talents were understated. I too miss him and a timely reminder from Micky Boyle and John Poole as to what a good guy he was.

  18. A upcoming interview airs this Saturday on Signal 2 - Jimmy Mack Harrison aka Lenny Curtis Info: Jimmy Mack Harrison was born in South Carolina and the brother of late 50's Hitmaker Wilbert Harrison. As a young musician he played on Wil's big hit Kansas City among others before recording himself on the New York based Clock label. During the 1964/65 period he recorded with brother Bob as the Harrison Brothers signing to Emit, Everlast, ABC, Bobalou.....with the excellent Run For Your Life and Pearltone. http://youtu.be/jwqbxk1ZK9E In 1965 he met Robert Bateman who brought the Funk Brothers from Detroit to Columbia studios in New York and recorded Jimmy (as Lenny Curtis) on 'Nothing Can Help You Now' which Roulette's subsidiary End released. Bateman and Harrison had originally met at Motown where the paid worked behind the scenes on various studio projects. Following the flopped 45 Jimmy joined the Fabulous Fiestas who off the back of their earlier hit 'So Fine' got a recording deal with RCA. Moving out of New York, Jimmy continued to perform solo in the Carolina's before meeting his wife Darlene. Together they perform throughout the region with a classic Soul/R&B. Jimmy speaks fondly of his more famous brother and his time in the record business. More importantly he's thrilled that his End masterpiece has a fan base some 3,500 miles away from his roots. He hopes to come over to the UK soon, hopefully clutching a copy of two of the £800 rated rarity. The edited interview airs this Saturday on Signal 2 (AM/DAB/on line/App) © Goldsoul http://www.signal2.co.uk/ Wow! Great find Kev, who'd have thought he was on Run For Your Life as well. Amazing. Don't see a mention of it here, but I think he's also Geronimo and the Apaches on Galiko. Certainly sounds like him, as he has a very distinctive voice. Will have to listen to the Harrison Brothers records again, as the vocals on those never struck me as being similar to Lenny Curtis on End. Thats consistent with the Discogs page, although I appreciate this is not always correct. It has them recording together as early as 1960 and LC as early as 1959 solo. It has the Bob Harrison as the artist that recorded on Turntable as Bobby Harris. Sure Lenny will be able to verify. This CD would suggest that the Bob is actually Bobby Harris of Turntable etc. Both snippets seem to be confirmed by the excellent Sir Shambling website, although this says the single above isn'tJimmy/Lenny. Would be great to get all this clarified and documented first hand. The Golden 101Aug 06 2014 04:26 PM I think if you really want to 'get Googling' you will find out all you need on the Harrison Bros. At least I found him and discovered more about his anthem 'Nothing Can Help You Now' which is mainly what most want to know about. I will ask him if he cares to join in discussions on the forum. I am friends with Jimmy and Darlene. They are friends with Danny Woods and Maurice Williams. Darlene is the sister of one of the Tams. I have their latest album. Lovely people!! I've been speaking to him for a while now he's on facebook, he'd love to come over here I asked a promoter but nothing came of it. Maybe now it will PS yes he is Geronimo from Geronimo and the Apaches too
  19. The story is that Ian Levine and Motown songwriter Sylvia Moy did a version that was far too hi-n-r-g. I was asked to Soul it up so to speak. I think it's a decent job. Yvonne Vernee sounds great on it. I produced it with the late Clive Scott.
  20. QUOTE Jocko.... (a) I didn't trust the promoter to pull it off, (b) And if he did I didn't trust him to, provide value for money, or to make sure artists received all of the rewards, or even the majority. Yes if I got all of that wrong, I lost, but there were lots of reasons behind these decisions and discussions, none being due to a scene I was leaving behind at the time. Our reply; You got it wrong big time. Four SoultripUSA's, over 200 Artists, writers, producers shared in the success. A fantastic achievement due to them and folks like Dave Moore, Alison Nightingale, Dave Ferguson, Kev Farley, Mick H, Chris Dalton, Andy 'Tats' Taylor, Richard Searling, and countless others who helped drive it forward. Kenny Gamble in person and Berry Gordy by phone thanked me for honouring those artists who attended........ Why you would not trust someone who organises things properly is beyond me and quite frankly as insulting as it gets. Whenever members of the public see aggressive disrespectful comments from hardcore commentators like yourself, they tend to run a mile.....generally in Goldsoul's and similar operators direction.
  21. Both Richard Searling and I were not missing at all. RS was championing NEW Soul music and also promoting Parkers and the Ritz, Manchester. As for me, I owned a record store for 3 years selling Northern, promoted some local nights occasionally before starting the Avant, Oldham. A very successful Soul night from 1989. The pair of us were both on Sunset 102 in Manchester in 1988 again...playing Northern. The fact the revival started to kick in circa 1990 isn't our fault, we merely took up the reigns and improved standards for the regular non hardcore fan. Let's get things into perspective financially speaking.......were you there to help when I suffered losses ie 30k Skegness Weekender 1980, 10k SoultripUSA 2011? And many other bits of do's dropping a few hundred here and there. This 'they're only in it for the money' is straightforward mischief making and utter bollox. We are fans as well as business people and have been for over 40 years! My good friend Chris King, arguably the best promoter in the 80's quit being so by the early 90's, citing the abuse he took for 'money making'. He tenders apologies for bringing in the Ric Tic Revue and many others. STREWTH!
  22. Probably the most disrespectful post so far....... Remind me take you on in a Soul quiz......First to 50 and you get 40 start.......... DISGUSTED!
