So why start the thread in the first place Kev , it just comes across as a carrot dangling exercise that will never offer up anything more than a teaser ... ?
You appear to have ten pages of books for sale ... ?
1. I felt it was of interest to anyone even loosely connected with the scene. Let's see who wants the thread locked and leave it that. OK
2. Amazon have 10 pages of books and more on our site..NOT US! They are one of our affiliates.

I don't understand the continued pointless speculation in this thread , or even the thread itself ...
So Ian Levine and Kev Roberts are "allegedly" back in contact with Soussan , neither of them are going to offer up a phone number , e-mail address or any other details regarding his whereabouts so why does everyone keep on about him ... ?
SS himself is hardly going to just sign up on here to answer all your 'polite' questions either is he ... ?
Best you can hope for is an autobiography , to be published in the not too distant future , no doubt available exclusively through Goldsoul ...
No interest in any book or financial gain from Soussan whatsoever. Goldsoul are in the events business and no other. You are correct that his personal details are not going to be shared because that's his wish.
As for the 'allegedly' remark, what do Ian Levine and I have to gain? If interest wains on this important character of the 70's via this this platform I will happily lock the thread. Fair enough?

That was Soussan's label, wasn't it?
Black Magic was a division of Selecta Disc( Brian Selby) and distributed in the UK at the time by CBS(Sony). John Brattan was label manager and although short lived, they had pretty heft sellers including The Sharonettes(60,000), Dobie Gray(10k plus)
and various similar follow ups all achieving healthy numbers.
The scene had peaked by around 77 with the label trying different things ie Jill Baby Love and The Funkees.
The label folded but the record store flourished in the new emerging indie market and stayed at the forefront, until the untimely death of founder and owner Brian Selby.

Definitely the right spirit.Fabulous thread, really interesting to see the older chaps standing their ground, and as some have said the emotions involved...still now...
for all of us born after 69 he's just a name really, but I'd love to hear from him on here, I think some of you might even get stage fright!
The mans very welcome in my book, what a life he's led and what a legacy he's left outside his own country....

Just think if he came back, we'd be subjected to loads of new discoveries that we've known about for years
Steve- Understand the humorous side swipes, but he along with Ian Levine were the sound of 73-75. Those of us who were very active during that period revel in those incredible song finds.
Give us older guys a break.......ta

Can't deny that either, but the turnover of big records in the heyday of the scene was insane and many of them dived horribly in value after the pressing came out. We could have, or perhaps should have, enjoyed those great records for much longer at the time when it really mattered.
True. A few mistakes from the man.......counter balanced by the discovery of Double Cookin, I'll Always Need You, You Didn't Say A Word, I'm Not Strong Enough, You Don't Love Me, Dance Dance Dance, Love Runs Out......... Fair trade off?

I think it's very interesting he's around and I'd be glad to hear some genuine true stories but it's going to be incredibly hard to know if anything he says will be true. Unless he's had a major character transplant, it'll be smoke and mirrors and the gospel according to how he wants to portray it that week.
Totally agree Ady, which is why I said to Ian.....tread carefully. Simon is new to social media. The whole criticism thing might scare him to death lol

Get him to sign up on here, that would be fun…….
Steve- That clearly needs a lot of thought. Very few know him personally so it probably would turn into a witch hunt. On the positive side, once everybody got to know him and his character, methinks he would be well received.
One thing's for sure, we are talking about a very knowledgeable individual right up there with the best of them.
One snippet of news I can give you is he's still interested in vinyl. He mentioned to Ian that he's looking for a 45 on Bell by Curtis, The Brothers called When Love Goes Wrong on Bell.
Anyone have it for sale?
Hopefully I can cease playing messenger, but while we try and coax him into the arena I'm happy to offer snippets of interest to members.

This may be a merger from the 'Will the real' thread.....but breaking news on Simon Soussan, the notorious, creative and often misunderstood character from the 70's.
He is alive and well. Ian Levine disclosed information to me a short while ago and it's pretty conclusive. I too have exchanged emails with the man.
Updates as we get them......
1. Patti and the Emblems was a Golden Torch play from 1972.I don't know if anyone else wants to run with this thread with there own knowledge gaps. Might be fun...
Ok, here are three things that I ought to know but don't! Help please...
1. When the heck was Patti & the Emblems "Gonna love you etc" first played? It sounds like it ought to have been a Wheel fave and it seems to have been around forever, but I can't think when the heck I first heard it....
2. Was there ever really a record called "Let's shing-a-ling at the go go" by the Johnny Jackson Experience (?) or was it a Levine fictional cover-up?
3. Whatever happened to John E Abbey?
Many thanks!
2..Johnny Jackson is Midnight Brew by Melvin Carter
3. John Abbey alive and well and living in the U.S. Richard Searling and I interviewed him 2 years ago on our first 70's Soul show on Smooth.

Russ told me in a message over 4 million went, this was how he came up with the figure.. It also includes his response to the drugs issue
.Rubbish. We sorted ours out. Wow one arrest a week out of 9,500 yet no prosecutions. We averaged 1,500 each Monday, Wednesday and Friday early session and 5,000 on Saturdays and 5,000 monthly Friday Alnighters. That's a bit more than 4 Million !!!! We stamped out the Druggy idiots in 1974 as we got the All clear. This is fact.
He can certainly sell himself that's for sure. The reality, well that's very different.
I was one of the originals on Wednesday night too hosting the night with the late Mike Rollo. It ended after a while due to dwindling numbers. The venue didn't hold 5,000 so the Saturday statement and Friday All Nighters is pure fiction.

Simon Soussan Found
in All About the SOUL
There's nothing to gain! Ian found him and has he's banned from this site he asked me to post up the interesting news.
Would we not be interested in say Jeff King coming on and saying 'Anyone interested in discussing the Soul Sounds label or The Yorkshire Ripper speaks from his jail cell about his love of Northern Soul ?
