  2. Agree with Ted

Rita & The Tiaras , the most i paid was £150 pounds back in 1986 i have had few copies over the years its not rare purely supply indemand , to pay 2 grand plus is total madness its not in the same league as Lester Tipton  or Jimmy Burns .

Realistic price for Rita & Tiaras now a days £1200 imo

You must be kidding........it's one of the most popular 45's of all time scene wise and pricing to reflect that is nearer £3,500! And it wouldn't surprise me if it reaches 5k.

There's a big difference between the rare 45's that are insatiable dance floor wise and ones that are just highly collectable.

1200.......I'll buy 10 right now

  3. Is Soussan "The Joker"?

No......The original 1966 cut was a mixture of vocal phasing between Leonard Grayson(Miles brother) and original TV Joker, actor Cesar Romero.

In fact Leonard gave me his rendition at Soul Trip USA in LA 2004  :D

  4. Hi Kev

I note he wasn't responsible for all of the tunes in #160, just some of them.

As you knew how SS worked, do you think those tunes he was responsible for in #160 were based on commercial opportunism, sense of humour, sadism or a combination of two or more of those?

    Atb

    Stu

Probably the right phrase is 'creative opportunism'

He was mad on Northern, had tremendous charisma and I suspect wanted to be famous. His talent got him so far.

His last email to me suggests he isn't interested in Northern due to the negativity he would attract. He's focussed on reactivating his disco works I understand.

  5. those first two are on my youtube channel probably bought from soul bowl on release ,used them on a facebook page to show peeps what they missed lol

    kev

For the record, SS didn't produce or have any involvement with Russell Harness. He had done away with Black Magic by then due to the Shalamar lift off.

Harness is from Telford I believe and still around. No idea where the Funkees are and don't care to find out  :D

Interesting that a Paula Roussel single exists from 1966 but as we all know it isnt her on 'Pieces'

    Northern Soul 'cheesey' history

  6. has anyone mentioned the ads for the blackpool mecca that were printed in blues and soul in which they apologised for not being able to list the records they were playing because of some contemptable underhand french individual from california who as soon as he found out the title pressed them up in large quantities and flooded the market with them. they went on to describe him as an evil person. Any relation?

I think he's the same person who is now dear friends with Ian, who in turn asked me to make members aware of the man's existence.

  7. Books? I've got an idea. Why doesn't someone sit down with Soussan then and ghost write his story. It shouldn't take too long with a bit of effort and a few cups of tea and cake and it could be self published on Amazon. Someone like Ian Dewhirst who has an affinity with the man or even Ian L could do it?  To me that would be better than snippets of unreliable information coming out. But it would still come with a massive health warning. We've seen how good some DJs memories are of events 40 years ago (no drug convictions at Wigan / 4m etc).

Absolutely Steve. Ian D is the right man for this gig. It also gives me an opportunity to share a few Soussan rib ticklers with him :D

  8. I'm as interested in the topic as anyone on the scene , just couldn't see the point in two running together , as for cynicism and looking elsewhere ... I found something to be cynical about , live with it ...

Well then stop making silly statements without any facts to back them up. End of.

  9. Fair enough , but there's a long running thread on the subject so why the need for another running concurrently ... ?

If Mike wishes to merge it......no problem with me. As for your cynism towards the topic....look away and chat on other threads.

  10. Fair enough , but there's a long running thread on the subject so why the need for another running concurrently ... ?

Its not immediately obvious what you have to gain, but I'm sure you'll find a way,

you usually do, that's if, Soussan doesn't rip you off

in the process.   .

There's nothing to gain! Ian found him and has he's banned from this site he asked me to post up the interesting news.

Would we not be interested in say Jeff King coming on and saying 'Anyone interested in discussing the Soul Sounds label or The Yorkshire Ripper speaks from his jail cell about his love of Northern Soul ? :D

  11. So why start the thread in the first place Kev , it just comes across as a carrot dangling exercise that will never offer up anything more than a teaser ... ?

You appear to have ten pages of books for sale ... ?

    1. I felt it was of interest to anyone even loosely connected with the scene. Let's see who wants the thread locked and leave it that. OK

    2. Amazon have 10 pages of books and more on our site..NOT US! They are one of our affiliates.

  12. I don't understand the continued pointless speculation in this thread , or even the thread itself ...

So Ian Levine and Kev Roberts are "allegedly" back in contact with Soussan , neither of them are going to offer up a phone number , e-mail address or any other details regarding his whereabouts so why does everyone keep on about him ... ?

SS himself is hardly going to just sign up on here to answer all your 'polite' questions either is he ... ?

Best you can hope for is an autobiography , to be published in the not too distant future , no doubt available exclusively through Goldsoul ... :wicked:

No interest in any book or financial gain from Soussan whatsoever. Goldsoul are in the events business and no other. You are correct that his personal details are not going to be shared because that's his wish.

As for the 'allegedly' remark, what do Ian Levine and I have to gain? If interest wains on this important character of the 70's via this this platform I will happily lock the thread. Fair enough?

  13. That was Soussan's label, wasn't it?

Black Magic was a division of Selecta Disc( Brian Selby) and distributed in the UK at the time by CBS(Sony). John Brattan was label manager and although short lived, they had pretty heft sellers including The Sharonettes(60,000), Dobie Gray(10k plus)

and various similar follow ups all achieving healthy numbers.

The scene had peaked by around 77 with the label trying different things ie Jill Baby Love and The Funkees.

The label folded but the record store flourished in the new emerging indie market and stayed at the forefront, until the untimely death of founder and owner Brian Selby.

  14. Fabulous thread, really interesting to see the older chaps standing their ground, and as some have said the emotions involved...still now...

for all of us born after 69 he's just a name really, but I'd love to hear from him on here, I think some of you might even get stage fright!

The mans very welcome in my book, what a life he's led and what a legacy he's left outside his own country....

    Malcolm

    Definitely the right spirit.

  15. I've said elsewhere that Los Bravos had everything needed to be a Torch monster.  Would have sat very well with the pop-northern of Wayne Gibson, The Shakers, Guy Darrel etc.  Shame it was a hit really.

    Per-so-nally......I prefer these fellas...... :D

  16. Admit those are stellar finds that most of us could only dream of, but surely those records would have been discovered sooner or later anyway, Kev?

Of course, but let's thank him for the finds instead of constantly kicking the dude.

  17. It's sounds promising for a Kings Hall Special. SS & Ian Levine for one all nighter only, plus signings of book and double CD package for this historical event. ( Signed photos NOT included in the price )

Now why didn't I think of that
