'Have you got Wade in The Water ?' 'No, Sorry' 'Why not ??' 'Because I don't like it myself' 'What the hell's that got to do with it, you're a DJ. You're supposed to play what we want not what you want !!' Anybody got a copy of 'Wade in The Water' for sale ??
-
There's only one Kool and The Gang !!
-
Can you play that one that goes " dum dum dah dum dah dah dum...' It was in my other box !!!!!
-
I agree with you wholeheartedly. My 'gripe' if you wish to call it that is the blatant stuff. Yes we have all been to nights with a handful present and they have played a set that would be hard to better. Also been to a few Nighters etc, heard some Headlining DJ and thought WTF !! but that, as you said, is my opinion and others in the house could love or hate it with as much verve. The stuff that riles me the most is the ' the floor was packed all night, place was heaving, another packed night' when in reality there was a handful of punters and no one danced. I understand that a promoter needs to push their venue as they need to make it pay for them to pay the DJs and the Hire for the Room but at what cost. A simple 'had a great night etc' would suffice with no need to mention numbers or the business on the floor but to tell an untruth is morally not right. Its been a massive part of all our lives for 35 years or more and we should respect one and other. Makes me feel sad for the rest !!
-
If you read something about a do you went to and it was obviously an untruth don't you feel like - 'Dear BBC' and all that ?? If you don't then they will get away with it and that's not right is it ??
-
Really - Even if it's a blatant lie. It's not matter of dissing someone or an event but helping out a colleague !!
-
I have had the same reaction. The sound system was diabolical, I mentioned it wasn't too good and was lambasted by the promoter and a few others but made to feel like I was in a crowd of 1 !! Trouble is also that a lot of the people running events are your friends, or at least you talk to them, acknowledge them, so you feel a little aggrieved to saying anything that they may find hurtful.
-
Totally agree. How can you improve things if you don't know what needs improving. The trouble is, as you said, people tend to get personal and not constructive. We should be helping one and other. Chalky, you've become very astute as you've got older, but then again you always were !!
-
Read some feedback some time back that said ' The evening was banging from the start with the floor heaving all night long.' The review was placed by the Promoter and I can see how they want to build things up but speaking to someone who attended was told the 20 - 30 people attended and it was like a 'Morgue' Should this be posted in the feedback or is it wrong to do so ??
-
Week after Week we attend venues and we are left a little wanting. When reading Feedback on these events we invariably see that 'All the DJ's did awesome spots, the atmospere was buzzing and the Dance Floor was packed from the off' !! Dare to put a negative response in and you are either berated by all and sundry or the message removed ? ( can you do that ?? ) The reason for the feedback is to also inform future visitors of the quality of an event and so encourage them to attend. Put in something that is along the lines of an untruth and isn't that somewhat illegal ?? or at the least unsporting. I know we should accentuate the positive but at the cost of honesty and dignity ?? Seldom see a negative feedback. Perhaps its that people can't be arsed to put anything if its crap but shout from the highest of towers if it is a worthy venue. Is it allowed on SS to put negative feedback ?? Is it frowned upon ?? Shall I shut my mouth ??? Tezza XXX

Hi Roddy, Put it to Bed ?? I think this has a lot of legs and will raise a lot of discussion, especially with the points ypou have raised. I agree to an extent. There are an inordinate amount of Soul Nights around and a hell of a lot are not ones that I myself would frequent but ... If people carry on going to them then who are we to denigrate them. If its not your ( or my ) cup of tea then we don't attend. As an earlier post says they 'should' sink or swim on their reputation. You Travel 200 miles most weekends to Soul Events which must be local to a lot of folk. Travelling 200 Miles doesn't make it any better than Travelling 2 Miles to an event. That makes little sense. Its not a 'Who's got the biggest Nob' contest. its about quantity and quality. Back in the early Seventies ' when we was kids ' there were Soul Nights on around the Chesterfield Area most every Night throughout the week. A hell of a lot of people would never have heard the music if it wasn't for these people spending their time and money putting on these local do's. Room enough for everybody. You obviously are an educated man and know what you like as am I and I go to the places I like. I don't go to the places you like or Swaggy likes or Sean likes, I go to the ones I like, as it should be. Enjoy your weekend, wherever you may venture my friend. Tezza XXX

Hi Alan, Quite the contrary. You have the good manners to request a picture and they are of the highest standard. You also have the descency to offer copies to the Subjects at the following event FOC. One particular photographer apparently charges for any copies you may request. I suppose it costs to produce them but ... Don't mind the odd one or two but all night long. As I said, it was on a selfish note I brought it up because of my 'condition' ( bad enough I'm a Ginna without this as well !! ). The one this weekend had a repeat Flash that strobed for 10 - 15 secs taking numerous pictures to capture that perfect moment but it was like being at a Firework display !! Bit of overkill me thinks but thats my personal opinion. I have no problem with the people taking the pictures, a nicer set of people you couldn't wish to meet and I suppose they take great pride in their work. I like the rooms to be dark, not bothered about watching the 'good dancers', its all about me, I want to loose myself in the Music and the moment. As I said, bad eggs on my part as it is painful for me personally. Sorry, no intention to offend. Keep up the good work Alan Tezza XXX

It is great to see the younger element within the 'scene' but far too few to sustain it in the way it has been for the past 40 - 50 Years. As has been said on numerous occasions, it will die with us as a full blown 'Scene'. Yeh, there'll be the odd night remenissing but enough to hold it afloat, perhaps not. Let them enjoy it while they can. in a few years time when we are all too old to attend and these youngsters have grown, married and have kids they will drift away as we did in the 80's. There won't be enough around to keep it going until their return some 15 - 20 years later. Should we not be enjoying it while we can, concentrate on ourselves for a change. We are not the Olympic Committee with a need to produce a Legacy. Historically, no music genre has had the need to do this. This is our time and we should let them find their own way. As for dissing the Baggy Trouser brigade !! Granted, it does look a tad on the sad side to see a 45 + wearing the Bags, Badges and Bowling Shirt 'KTF' but back in the day it was the dress code. We soon stepped away from it but don't dismiss it and try to distance yourself. We had the Ziggy Hair, The Wide Collars and perhaps, the younger amongst us, The Safety Pin but thats OK, its what makes you the person you are today. Todays Nighter Scene is bigger than ever, we should be thankful we are still around and still able to do this thing !!

We can see. yes please, PM me. I will see what you want and if we are of an accord then ....... Thanks Terry

Dirty Secrets: Which "oldie" Will You Never Ever Get Sick Of?
Tezza replied to Jhsoulnotts's topic in All About the SOUL
Kev !! Love this one. Slipped by me when thinking back. Trouble is, we don't hear it too much in the N Mids !! -
I am all for the odd picture at Soul Events, we all like to keep a record of great nights and friends but .... Recently I have seen a massive surge in the amount of Cameras ( and 'professional photographers' ) appearing at Soul Events all over the place. They are becoming very intrusive and their ENORMOUS flash guns shooting off all over the Halls lighting everything up. I suffer somewhat with bright lights and strobes etc as I am photphobic so it is on a selfish note I raise this, but despite that I am seeing quite a few of my friends getting slightly perturbed by it. We left an event early this week because of this and it is become endemic of most places. We all know about Coops and Martyn Johnson and accept those 2 as their work is exemplary but do we really need it every minute of every night. Its bad enough that all Mobile Phones now come blessed with descent Cameras without all the budding the David Baileys. This is not pointed at the occasional photographer taking piccys of their mates by the way. Bad eggs on my part ?? Perhaps -

Sorry about that. Last night tipped me over. I will check it out and comment on it. Thanks for the heads up Terry
