  1. I understand that different places, different toons but do the places that play the different toons play the same different toons Month in Month out ?? ( do you know what I am saying, a bit convoluted !! ) See ya soon Winnie :-) Have a great XMas
  2. There's an event close to where we live that attracts a descent 300+ crowd every Month. Awesome venue, 2 Rooms ( one for Motown, although it does tend to slip through the divide into the big room quite often — That’s for another thread !! ) nice friendly Promoters. Every Month they play a not so varied selection of NS ‘Favourites’ that has the floor busy most of the time. DJ’s arrive and play to the floor, keep it moving as any good DJ should ?! ( leave it !! ). Have they found the Holy Grail of Events or are the Public Brainwashed into thinking this is what they want ?? Frustrates the hell out of me because I see the DJ’s they have on and know the depth of their boxes. They are driven by the belief that this is what is wanted of them. It is an ideal place to go along and see some old friends that are married to the Stepford Wives of Soul but I leave with a bitter taste in my mouth. Majority — I think I appear not to be. Am I wrong, should I accept this or do we try to change from within. I know I shouldn’t go to these places if it’s not my thing but they now seem to be becoming the norm. Don’t tell me of places I should go instead, this will only serve to perpetuate it. “Please help me , to find myself. I’m a lonely man …..”
  3. Driving into work today with to The Jam playing on my CD ( unfortunately my Car isn't OVO !! ) and in particular 'Going Underground' (March 1980) 'The Public Gets what The Public wants' juxtaposed with 'The Public wants what The Public gets' Frequenting various Soul events around the Midlands and South Yorkshire we find that the majority of events play the same stuff week in week out, and even down to a DJ playing the same stuff at different events ( probably the same in other areas but different tooons !!) Is it a matter of 'Gets what they want' or 'Wants what they get' ?? Without this falling into some SS pit of despair, what is your take on it - Generalisms, no names !! If its been done to death then ignore it and move on - its nearly XMas XXXX

  5. Nice Demo on E-Bay - They want £200 for it though !!
  6. Oppps sorry Dj's PLAYING for them sleeves read that wrong.
  7. Its difficult to 'Check Out' an event for a DJ. Someone books you for 3 months down the line but you are booked out for the 2 Months leading up to it and its not possible to get to the place to check it out. Can't go everywhere whereas a Promoter has his/her event once a Month ( more often) and so is able to go out the rest of the Month to see said DJ and so make a valued judgement. The onus should lie solely at the feet of the Promoter. I book a DJ because I know the stuff he/she plays and see that he/she would be ideal for my venue. Don't pick a name at Random and expect them to tell me if it is there bag !!
  8. I think 'Force their taste' on the rest of Soul Source rather than express !! Some folk don't believe that others could possibly know what they like because its not what they like. Vive La Differance !!
  9. A DJ should be playing records that he believes are quality and need to get aired. I DJ and collect records. The records I buy are for me, I don't buy them because johnny public like them otherwise I would have stuff like The Majestics, Tim Tam and the Turnups, The Vibrations (oops - got that one !! ) in my box !! I like what I play and I play what I like - surely that's what any descent DJ should be doing. You like a DJ for what he plays. You don't book someone then hand them a Play List - ' We only play these here mate !! '
  10. We were looking to change our format at The Ph*&£%X so the main Guest gets a full 1 1/2 Hrs and so give them the opportunity to express themselves fully. This topic has been done before and it split the crowd. The short spots for variety but long spots for character building. Personal taste. I prefer the longer spot as a DJ but shorter spots as a punter. Can't even please myself !!!
  11. Recently played at Alderley Edge and did 2 - 1/2 hr spots. Early and 'late' doh !! Very difficult to get motivated in 1/2 hr as as you get started its time to plan your last few to go out with. I suppose its good in many ways for the Punters 'cause despite the DJs all playing 'Oldies' 'Crossover' or whatever, every DJ has a different feel and so there is a variety. DJ comes on and you don't like the suff he or she plays then you only have to put up with them a short time. As a DJ its not good but if thats how the organisers want it then so be it !!
  12. Should be a rule of DJing. Put an Instrumental on at least 3 times in a set. There are enough out there to play a full set of shear quality 3 or 4 an hour isn't too much to ask is it ??
  13. Car Stairs - Mr Levine's Dagger to the Heart !!
  14. What is it Pete ( Can't see it at Work )
  15. Almost like its waiting to get going and in the end thinks, you know what, I can't be arsed !!
  16. Invokes memories and imagery of Ready Steady Go or the such. Can see the Girls in their short Black and White Quarter Dresses and Boots bouncing along to it !!
  17. Bit too heavy I think. £8 1/2 is not gonna change the World and to be honest the subject matter is the Value of the Record and not the Audit Trail that accompanies the Monies ! Got to say that anything is only worth what someone is willing to pay. More power to the Buyer, may possible complete the collection and so the Sum has the greater value than the one. Could have bought me Cecil Washington plus a few more. Just jealousy because we can't afford or justify such an outlay. Worth more than my Car - how sad/good is that ( Delete where applicable !! )
  18. The innocence of the production and the raw quality of his voice are what make it what it is. You can imagine them getting to the recording studio and the bosses saying, 'you've got 30 minutes, make me something' - and didn't they just !!!
  19. Ditto - Lol !!!
