It was but isn't that genreising to call them Soul or Dance Music - Pedantic perhaps but ... Again Soul ? any kind, Dance Music - modern or ANY Dance Music. It is so hard to not state a genre without being genre specific.

' Ridiculous "genre tagging" ' - I don't understand what that means. They just play Music, any Music irrespective of the Genre. So you could get Doo Wop, Rap, Reggae, Swing, Thrash Metal - if there was such a thing as genre tagging. Not being obtuse, I really don't understand that statement.

Never done it for me but each to their own. Its up there with The Majestics for me. Never really understood where it fits. I always thought it was just me because it packs the floor when its played. I sometime think I keep turning up on the wrong night !! Not just your opinion by the way !!

Agree. There is also a limitation on the quantity of quality venues taht are still around. As more and more Working Mens Clubs, the backbone of the Northern Soul Scene, are closed and demolished then it loses its impetus. Sterile environments such as Sports Halls do not lend themselves too well to the seedy backdrop of the traditional NS venues. Northern Soul Music has no future because it is a music of the past, the scene itself - different animal. The original question is does it have a future. With people infering that we need to listen to the Modern Artists etc then it is obvious what the answer will be, or am I being blinkered ? It appears, like most things in Britain these days, people are being led by Europe and its influence. Lets try to keep at least one thing British. Northern Soul - Northern England not Northern Europe.

Looking back at the original question posed or statement made, whichever way you look at it and then reading the responses it is rather sad. If the majority of folk out there uphold the feelings and sentiment of a lot of the views expressed in this thread then it is obvious that Northern Soul ( as we know it ) has no future. Year on year a screw has been removed from the door until it has finally become unhindged. The future is before you, you have no Map, Compass and certainly no Moses to lead the way, make of it what you will. Remember, at the Crossroads go left, or right, whichever way you wish because at the end of that road there is a Crossroads ... For Sale - I record collection ( mostly Oldies ) ONO !!

Yes, forget how good the musicians really where that backed Bowie. He drew your attention so much that they became bit players. Ronson was a genius on Guitar also. Saw the Ziggy Tour on its Sheffield and Doncaster legs. Amazing !!

Agree Jim It is a sad reality but it will probably die with us. There is no fundemental right that states we must create a legacy and the young guys and girls are welcome to create a 'Scene' of their own. They are also more than welcome through our doors. What we don't want is people coming in and telling us that what we had is gone and we should be moving on or indeed, what we have is shit It is not gone, it is forever in our Hearts and will live through us. We move from one side of the Pennines to the other and what is overplayed in the East Midlands is fresh and new to our friends on the smelly side of the Pennines and visa versa.
